Chapter 15: Chapter 15
15. Spiritual Root Testing: Is Teyvat a Land of Immortal Cultivation Geniuses?
Explaining to them why more spiritual roots weren't necessarily better would be too complicated, and they might not fully grasp it. But if I just said, you can bite off more than you can chew, they would understand.
Liuyun seemed to get the idea and didn't ask any further questions, which actually saved Jiang Yan some effort.
At that moment, Jiang Yan noticed that Zhongli and the others looked hesitant, as if they wanted to say something but were holding back. He quickly guessed what was on their minds.
They just wanted to see if they had spiritual roots and how strong their talents were.
Since he had planned to let them test it anyway, Jiang Yan smiled and gestured toward the mirror formed from his true energy on the stone table.
"If you're curious about your talents, you can test them using this mirror. It's a small spell specifically designed to assess disciples' potential."
Hearing this, Zhongli immediately perked up. Under Jiang Yan's guidance, he placed his hand on the mirror.
Everyone watched as the mirror began to vibrate.
Then, a steady, earth-yellow light bloomed from its surface, rising into a solid beam above Zhongli's head.
Zhongli was about to ask what it meant when he noticed Jiang Yan staring at him with a complicated expression.
There was a hint of disbelief in his eyes.
That made Zhongli pause. But he still asked, "So, how is my talent for cultivating immortality?"
Jiang Yan let out a long sigh and shook his head slightly.
"Heaven-grade Earth Spiritual Root…"
"That's all? Is that good?" Zhongli asked curiously.
Jiang Yan looked at him, then shook his head again.
"You underestimate yourself. A Heaven-grade Earth Spiritual Root—or simply Heaven Spiritual Root—is an extremely rare talent. As long as you don't die young, you are guaranteed to become an immortal."
"If Shushan were still in its prime, the elders would have fought over you to take you as their true disciple."
Upon hearing this, Xiao and the others immediately congratulated Zhongli with excitement.
Even Zhongli, with his normally composed demeanor, felt a sense of satisfaction. He stepped aside, giving the others a turn.
Jiang Yan, however, was still in shock.
He had never expected Zhongli to have such a powerful talent.
At first, he thought it would be enough if Zhongli merely had some spiritual root—any level of qualification for cultivation, even a weak Three Spiritual Root. That alone would justify pulling Zhongli into Shushan to help rebuild it…
No—not help… He would be a pillar of the sect!
But to his surprise…
Zhongli, a being from Teyvat—a mere small world on the tree of imaginary numbers—actually possessed one of the rarest and most powerful spiritual roots.
Where was the logic in this?!
If Zhongli really started cultivating immortality, he would definitely be able to transcend and become an immortal.
At that moment, Jiang Yan became even more serious, turning his gaze toward the others with anticipation.
He had already struck gold with Zhongli, but why stop there?
"Gan Yu, you're next," Liuyun said, nudging her forward.
Gan Yu hesitated, but before she could refuse, Jiang Yan gently took her hand.
"Calm your mind, regulate your breathing, and let the true energy in the mirror flow freely. Don't resist," he instructed.
Gan Yu barely registered his words. She was too focused on the fact that Jiang Yan was holding her hand.
A deep blush crept from her neck to her cheeks. Her eyes turned dazed.
But in the next moment, an extremely cold aura surged from the mirror, pulling her back to reality.
A brilliant ice-blue light bloomed from the mirror, slightly weaker than Zhongli's beam.
The others weren't sure what that meant, so they turned to Jiang Yan for an explanation.
But when they saw his face, they froze.
Jiang Yan was staring at the mirror, looking completely dumbfounded—almost as if he thought it was broken.
For a long moment, he examined the mirror. Then, realizing it was his own condensed true energy—meaning it couldn't be wrong—he finally spoke.
"Supreme-Grade Ice Spiritual Root… Though not as powerful as Zhongli's Heaven Spiritual Root, it still makes you a top-tier genius."
Gan Yu's eyes lit up, a satisfied smile spreading across her face.
She never expected to surpass Zhongli in talent—everyone in Teyvat knew how extraordinary Zhongli was.
But to be this highly regarded by Jiang Yan was more than enough for her.
At least now, she knew she was a genius in his eyes.
After two consecutive tests—one for a Heaven Spiritual Root and one for a Supreme-Grade Spiritual Root—Jiang Yan started seriously questioning reality.
Looking at the remaining immortals eagerly waiting their turn, he found himself feeling… skeptical.
Zhongli was already an unexpected jackpot, but could it really happen twice?
And yet, as he tested the others…
Liuyun: Supreme-Grade Wind Spiritual Root.
Water Illusion: High-Grade Water Spiritual Root.
Mooncutter: High-Grade Fire Spiritual Root.
Xiao: Supreme-Grade Wind Spiritual Root.
Not a single one of them had spiritual roots below High-Grade. Even more unbelievable, they all had single spiritual roots.
Jiang Yan couldn't help but wonder… Is Teyvat just a factory for immortal cultivation geniuses?!
If a major cultivation sect from the world of immortals ever discovered this place, they would lose their minds!
Zhongli, on the other hand, had initially felt his Heaven Spiritual Root was something special.
But after hearing that nearly everyone had incredible spiritual roots, it started feeling… less impressive.
"This is unbelievable…" Jiang Yan muttered in amazement. "Teyvat is truly a land of geniuses. I thought it was rare enough that one of you had such talent…"
"I never imagined that all of you would be this extraordinary."
"If the founders of Shushan were still alive and saw a world like this, they would have happily claimed Teyvat under Shushan's domain."
"You'd all be elite inner disciples—at the very least."
Zhongli's expression shifted.
So… they weren't just decent talents—they were extremely rare ones.
Liuyun, still unsure, asked, "So, our talents are really that strong?"
Jiang Yan nodded firmly.
"Absolutely. Never underestimate yourselves."
"In the great cultivation worlds, a High-Grade Spiritual Root already makes someone a top-tier genius among billions."
"Normally, anyone with a High-Grade Spiritual Root is personally recruited by an elder."
"Supreme-Grade Spiritual Roots? They become core disciples, trained with the highest priority."
"As for a Heaven Spiritual Root…" Jiang Yan shook his head.
"That's the level reserved for direct successors to sect masters. In all of Shushan's history, I only know of three disciples with Heaven Spiritual Roots—my three senior martial siblings."
"They each reached the stage of Refining Spirit and Returning to the Void at a young age. Our master has already declared that they will ascend to immortality within a thousand years."
Jiang Yan's words made Zhongli feel slightly reassured.
It seemed his talent was, indeed, one of the rarest in existence.
Gan Yu, still curious, looked at Jiang Yan. "What about you, Jiang Yan?"
"Me?" Jiang Yan chuckled.
"I'm my master's final disciple. After taking me in, my master accepted no more students and devoted himself entirely to preparing for his tribulation."
"No, I mean—your spiritual roots…"
Gan Yu trailed off when she saw Jiang Yan's subtle, knowing smile.
A closed disciple of a master of that level…
It was obvious.
Jiang Yan's talent wasn't just good—it was beyond comprehension.
He was probably even stronger than a Heaven Spiritual Root.
