Chapter 18: Amber: "You'll Find Out When the Time Comes."
"Probably…"
Kaito's face showed a thoughtful expression, his answer sounded a bit uncertain.
There was nothing he could do; after all, he was unique, possessing one soul in two bodies.
To be honest, he did find it a bit troublesome. After all, with Kaito present, Wendy had to be careful not to accidentally obliterate him; he was still too weak compared to her.
But then again, to say he didn't mind was also true, since, after all, he was, after all, himself.
Kaito really was…
Faced with Kaito's answer, Amber was a little speechless, then said, "I've known you for days now, and only today did I realize you're like a block of wood."
Amber looked a bit helpless after saying that.
Honestly, even she, an outsider, could sense Wendy's unique feelings toward Kaito, yet Kaito himself hadn't noticed. It was too strange.
Wait a minute…
Suddenly, Amber thought of a possibility.
Could it be… Wendy had always been very subtle?
And that's why the slow-witted Kaito hadn't noticed?
Hmm… That seemed possible…
As she thought about it, Amber became more and more convinced of this possibility.
After all, Wendy had practically bombarded her with hints just now, but never directly told her to stop getting close to Kaito. That alone was quite telling.
Indeed… Wendy must have been hinting at Kaito all along… but Kaito, that blockhead, hadn't reacted at all!
Amber felt like she understood everything.
She even thought that if Wendy stood in front of Kaito without clothes, Kaito would only wonder why Wendy wasn't wearing any.
"Wood is…"
Grrrrowl—
Just as Kaito was about to say something, his stomach suddenly rumbled.
To avoid awkwardness, he paused, then continued, "…humanity's good friend."
Actually, having been interrupted, he had already forgotten what he originally intended to say; he just felt like he needed to say something, so he blurted that out.
But he was truly hungry now. Since morning, he'd only had a few bites of roasted meat Wendy bought and some apple cider.
"Humanity's good friend?" Kaito's remark, it had to be said, successfully stumped Amber. However, Amber didn't dwell on the strange comment for too long. "Never mind. Do you want something to eat? I brought some jerky."
As she spoke, Amber pulled a small packet of jerky from her bag.
Because she was often out in the field, Amber had prepared some jerky.
After all, you couldn't always find meat, and sometimes, even if you did, you couldn't make a fire due to the weather. Therefore, preparing some ready-to-eat food was essential.
"Jerky, this time? Thanks!"
Kaito was a little surprised that Amber also carried jerky; he'd thought she always just made a fire and grilled meat whenever she was hungry.
"You can't always make a fire when you're outside, so of course, you have to prepare some jerky." As she spoke, Amber took out a small packet of jerky for herself, ready to eat; she was hungry too.
But before she could open the packaging, her hand suddenly stopped. "Last time I was with you, I didn't bring any jerky because I didn't have time."
"It sounds like you work pretty hard, being out there for so long every day."
Hearing Amber say she had no time, Kaito couldn't help but recall how she went out of the city on missions every day recently, feeling a bit emotional.
He knew this was Amber's daily life, and she did it all by herself.
"Because I'm a Reconnaissance Knight. It's my duty."
She paused the motion of putting jerky into her mouth. Looking at Kaito, Amber seemed to recall something, her eyes then immediately hardening with unwavering resolve.
Clap, clap, clap—
"Why are you clapping?"
Amber looked at Kaito, a little confused, surprised by his sudden applause.
"I feel like I've met a true knight."
Kaito spoke these words from the bottom of his heart.
Because Kaito was aware of some of Amber's background story. If he had gone through something like that, he probably wouldn't have remained a Reconnaissance Knight, but Amber had persevered, which was truly admirable.
A true knight?
"Alright, let's not talk about me for now. Your problem isn't solved yet."
Although she was happy about the recognition, Amber felt she still needed to help Kaito resolve the current situation.
"My problem?" Kaito was a little surprised; he didn't know what Amber was referring to.
While it was true he had something to resolve, that was a task given to him by the system, which Amber couldn't possibly know about.
"Let's go sit on that big rock first."
Seeing Kaito's clueless expression, Amber was already somewhat used to it. She decided to tell him while they ate jerky.
"Okay."
Answering with a hint of doubt, Kaito followed behind Amber, walking toward the big rock she had mentioned.
What was Amber doing?
Could it be that she wanted him to tell Wendy not to do strange things in front of her?
And how Amber seemed cold toward him just now…
What was going on?
Walking behind her, Kaito's mind raced, considering all sorts of possibilities.
Although he knew Wendy was probably the cause of this situation—after all, Wendy had tried all sorts of strange behaviors in front of Amber to complete a mission—why was he, Kaito, also affected?
Just because he knew Wendy?
Kaito felt like his CPU was about to burn out.
But before it could, Amber would likely speak up, as she was already sitting on the large rock ahead.
With that thought, Kaito also sat down on the large rock. They sat some distance apart, both looking straight ahead.
"Kaito."
"What is it?"
Kaito knew Amber was about to speak, which made him focus.
"Can you help me ask Wendy to come out? Tonight at eight, by the stone bridge at the city gates."
Turning her head to look at Kaito, Amber said this.
Amber wanted to ask Wendy out?
Hearing that Amber wanted to ask Wendy out, Kaito grew even more confused, but he still replied, "No problem, but it depends if she has time."
Although Kaito knew he would definitely have time, he still answered in a way that seemed reasonable.
After all, Kaito supposedly wouldn't know if Wendy had time.
"Okay, if she doesn't have time then, ask her to set a time, and then let me know." Nodding, as if she had thought of something, Amber added, "If she agrees…"
"She'll definitely agree, but what do you want to see her about—"
"You'll know when the time comes."
Without giving Kaito a chance to ask, Amber cut him off.
