Chapter 5: The Awkward Kaito
[System, I have a question.]
After Amber left again, Kaito decided to take advantage of this lull to ask the System why he hadn't been harmed by the explosion.
But after he spoke for a while, the System still didn't respond, which left Kaito feeling a bit puzzled.
[System?]
[Sys?]
[Oh, Sys?]
Even after calling three times, the System still didn't reply.
No way... it's gone silent again?
Holding the last bit of grilled meat in his hand, Kaito sat on the bed with a helpless expression.
What sin had he committed to end up with such a System?
Honestly, if the System had a physical form, he would have long since given it a few 'Mighty Vajra Palms' to see if it would still glitch.
Thump-thump-thump—
Just then, the familiar sound came from the stairs again; Amber was back.
Creak—
Along with the creaking of the wooden door, a figure flashed inside.
"Sorry to keep you waiting, Kaito. Water and paper."
As soon as she entered the room, Amber handed the paper and a bottle of water in her hand to Kaito.
"Thanks, Amber."
After popping the last bit of grilled meat into his mouth and tossing the paper wrapping into the trash, Kaito took the paper for wiping his mouth and the drinking water that Amber handed over.
Then, with a gulp, he chugged the drinking water in the bottle, finally wiping his hands and mouth with the paper.
At this moment, Kaito was full and satisfied; he couldn't have been more content.
"Is it really that good?"
Seeing Kaito's thoroughly satisfied expression, Amber found it hard to believe her own grilled meat had produced such an effect.
Of course, it wasn't that Amber thought her grilled meat was bad, but she simply considered a normal grilled chop to be nothing special, just something to fill one's stomach.
"Of course it is," Kaito replied as if it were the most obvious thing, though he was a little puzzled why Amber would ask.
"Hehe, that's good, that's good."
The corners of her mouth couldn't help but turn up. Amber was genuinely happy that her grilled meat could earn such high praise from Kaito.
Honestly, at first she was worried he'd find it unpalatable, but the outcome was beyond her expectations.
"Oh, right, Amber, aren't you tired from standing all this time? Why don't you sit down?"
As if suddenly remembering something, Kaito shifted over a bit and said this.
Regardless, it was rude for him to keep sitting while she stood, not to mention she'd been running errands for him.
Could she be feeling shy?
Seeing Amber deep in thought, Kaito decided to stand up himself so she could sit down and rest.
"No, no, don't." Seeing Kaito about to stand, Amber quickly urged him to stay seated. She then sat down beside him. "I just suddenly remembered something I hadn't done yet, so I spaced out for a moment."
"Ah, I see," Kaito nodded.
"So... what are your plans for later? You seem to be recovering very quickly."
After sitting down, to ease the awkwardness and also to find out Kaito's next steps, Amber asked this question.
"Next?" Hearing Amber ask, Kaito thought for a moment. "First, I'll take on commissions to earn Mora. I seem to have lost all the Mora I had on me, so I need to find a place to settle down and stay."
Because he felt it would be strange to be traveling without a single Mora, Kaito fabricated a story about having lost all his Mora.
"It didn't fall into that pit, did it? I'm sorry, I didn't see it when I brought you back."
Thinking Kaito had lost his Mora in that pit, Amber felt a little embarrassed.
If she had been a bit more careful then, Kaito's Mora wouldn't have been lost there.
Although it wasn't directly her fault, she had had a chance to prevent it.
"No, no, actually I lost it before then."
Not expecting Amber to misunderstand and even blame herself, Kaito quickly clarified that it had nothing to do with her.
Regardless, he didn't want his casual lie to make someone else feel guilty.
"So, are you going to take on commissions tomorrow? I happen to have some tasks as well, maybe we could go together."
Even though Kaito said that, Amber still wanted to help him. After all, he might have just said it to prevent her from feeling guilty.
"Sounds good," Kaito nodded casually, but then he quickly cried out in alarm internally, realizing he had mixed himself up with Wendy.
He had actually intended for Wendy to take on the commissions, since she was so strong, while he was just a normal person.
But while talking to Amber, he subconsciously said he would go take on commissions.
Of course, he wasn't technically wrong; both Wendy and Kaito were one person. It was just something he obviously couldn't let on.
What to do? Should I change the time? But it feels like Amber would still suggest going together, right?
After wholeheartedly agreeing, Kaito felt a bit awkward. After all, he was just a normal person; he probably couldn't even beat a Hilichurl.
If Amber saw him being chased by Hilichurls then, she'd definitely look at him strangely.
Clearly unable to defeat Hilichurls, yet still taking on commissions – that would look very odd.
"Then let's meet at the city gates tomorrow." Seeing Kaito agree, Amber set the meeting point for them both.
Then Amber stood up as if remembering something. "It's getting late now, so I'll head back. See you tomorrow, Kaito."
"See you tomorrow."
Watching Amber's back disappear through the doorway, Kaito wore a thoughtful expression. He needed to figure something out.
Right... commissions shouldn't just be about Hilichurls, should they?
But... it feels like I'll still get Hilichurl commissions...
Kaito fell into deep thought.
Never mind... I'll just have Wendy check what commissions are available right now...
After much thought, Kaito decided to have Wendy check specifically what commissions were available at Katheryne's place.
Coincidentally, Wendy had just completed a few commissions and was on her way to Katheryne to collect her reward.
City gates.
At Katheryne's.
"Here's your reward, please take it."
After verification, Katheryne handed a pouch filled with Mora to Wendy at the counter.
"May I take a look at what other commissions are available?"
Taking the pouch from Katheryne, Wendy wanted to see what other commissions there were.
When she had taken commissions earlier, she had just randomly picked a few that offered more Mora, without looking too closely.
"Of course."
Nodding, Katheryne placed several lists on the counter.
Hilichurls...
Hilichurls...
Why are they all Hilichurls...
Rapidly scanning the commissions on the list, Wendy found that most of them were related to Hilichurls.
"Thanks, Katheryne."
"You're welcome, Wendy."
After putting the lists back and thanking Katheryne, Wendy started walking towards Angel's Share.
She planned to buy something to eat at Angel's Share, spend the night there, and also take the opportunity to think about what to do tomorrow.
Angel's Share.
"Welcome."
As soon as she walked in, Wendy heard the bartender's welcoming words.
Not bad... not too many people...
Scanning the entire tavern, Wendy found there were still many open seats, which meant she didn't have to worry about finding a spot.
Hmm... Venti?
Suddenly, a green figure caught Wendy's attention.
And as Wendy looked over, the other person looked back.
"What a fine wine... Huh???"
Originally, Venti was quite drunk, but the figure by the doorway instantly sobered him up.
Am I seeing things???
Staring in surprise at the figure who had appeared in the doorway, Venti subconsciously rubbed his eyes.
