Genshin Impact: One Soul in Two Bodies

Chapter 7: Kaeya's Suspicion

Why is Kaeya following me and Amber?

No... he must be following just me...

Is it because of that loud bang and the mysterious pit that appeared? Or perhaps what happened at the side gate?

Walking towards Whispering Woods with Amber, Kaito kept feeling a chill down his spine.

There was nothing for it; Kaeya was constantly tailing them, making Kaito feel a little uneasy.

In fact, Kaito was also tracking Kaeya himself; otherwise, he wouldn't have known Kaeya was behind them.

Is this what they call 'the mantis stalks the cicada, unaware of the oriole behind'? Except both the cicada and the oriole are the same person...

As he walked, Kaito couldn't help but think this.

After all, who would have thought one person could have two bodies?

"Stormterror shouldn't show up today, right?"

At this, Amber raised a hand to her forehead, looking up at the sky as she spoke.

"Stormterror?" Kaito seemed a little confused.

"Yes, a giant dragon. Ever since its recent revival, it's been constantly stirring up storms around Mondstadt."

Turning to Kaito, Amber explained about Stormterror, then added confidently, "But it's alright, the Knights of Favonius will solve this problem."

"Yes, I'm sure they will." Kaito nodded.

"Oh, Kaito." As if remembering something important, Amber turned back to look at him.

"What is it?"

Seeing Amber's expression, Kaito was curious about what she was going to say.

"Just, don't go near Mondstadt's side gate recently. Something happened yesterday, and the side gate was severely damaged. It looks like traces left by some kind of battle; it's pretty terrifying either way. Don't go near there for a while."

After finishing, Amber looked at the nearby lake with a grim expression.

"I'm still busy with commissions, so I don't really have time to wander." Kaito casually followed Amber's gaze, knowing she was looking at Mondstadt's side gate, and continued, "But could it be traces left by Stormterror?"

"Probably not. Stormterror is enormous, but no one saw it appear yesterday."

Pulling her gaze back, Amber shook her head; she didn't think so.

While she believed Stormterror could cause such destruction, a dragon of that size couldn't possibly hide its presence.

"Then Mondstadt has been quite restless lately."

Kaito mused, sounding quite pensive.

"Indeed. And I suspect that you fainting in that pit might also be related to the person—or thing—that caused the destruction at the side gate."

I'm not a 'thing'...

Pfft... I'm a person!

Kaito instinctively cursed himself.

As the two chatted back and forth, Kaeya, who was secretly following behind, had already reached his preliminary conclusion.

Seems quite normal...

But... is he hiding something?

Like... is someone hunting him?

Behind a tree, Kaeya couldn't help but think this after eavesdropping on their conversation.

He believed that neither the strange pit in Windrise nor the damage to the side gate was Kaito's doing, but he suspected both were caused by someone pursuing Kaito.

However, he had no evidence for this suspicion yet; further investigation was required.

Honestly, he always respected other people's secrets, but only on the condition that those secrets didn't pose a threat to Mondstadt.

Oh... have they gone far?

I'll keep watching...

Hope I don't get spotted by Amber, the Reconnaissance Knight...

Noticing the two had walked quite a distance, Kaeya quickly followed, completely unaware that someone else was actually watching him from behind.

What exactly is Kaeya doing?

Does he suspect Kaito broke down the side gate???

Standing on a large tree and watching Kaeya's receding back, Wendy couldn't help but wonder with a hint of curiosity.

But now she understood why Kaito hadn't been questioned by the Knights; they were planning to follow him.

Never mind... I'll just keep following and see...

After a thought, Wendy decided to observe the situation further, then slowly followed after them.

Anyway, with Wendy escorting him from behind, Kaito ahead had nothing to worry abou—

Oh no... Stonehide Lawachurl?

Wendy, who had been strolling leisurely, instantly accelerated and flew forward after realizing, through memory sharing, that a Stonehide Lawachurl had appeared before Kaito.

But at that moment, the Stonehide Lawachurl was already swinging its massive fists, attacking Kaito and Amber.

Without thinking, Kaito instinctively pushed Amber aside.

And in the next second, a wall of ice appeared as if from nowhere, blocking Kaito's path.

Boom—

Countless cracks appeared on the ice wall, and then the entire structure exploded, sending a storm of ice and snow swirling around.

"Kaito!"

Amidst Amber's anxious cry, Kaito was sent flying backward, accompanied by ice shards of various sizes.

Even so, Kaito managed to steady himself at the last moment. However, the hands he used to block the ice shards were bruised and swollen, making him wince and suck in cold air from the pain.

So painful... But I wasn't blown away?

Although the pain in his arms persisted, Kaito noticed his body felt a little different.

If this had been before, he would have been knocked sprawling.

More importantly, his arms were already much better now, as if they had only been lightly scratched.

What's going on?

Looking at his arms, Kaito was bewildered.

But he quickly raised his head, needing to appear normal.

Boom—

As a figure landed on the ground, the massive form of the Stonehide Lawachurl also crashed down.

He didn't notice Wendy behind him, did he?

Looking at Kaeya beside the Stonehide Lawachurl's corpse, Kaito couldn't help but feel a little worried.

Just as Wendy was about to make her move, Kaeya had stepped in first. After that, Wendy had merely watched from the side, which was why Kaito hadn't immediately wondered who had acted, since he'd seen it all unfold.

"Are you okay, Kaito?"

At this, Amber rushed to Kaito's side, her face full of worry.

What had just happened was too swift for her to even react.

But she knew that if it hadn't been for Kaito, she would definitely be lying on the ground right now.

"It's nothing, just my hand hurts a bit."

Kaito shook his hand, smiling and shaking his head to show he was fine.

Indeed, that was the truth; he wasn't just putting on a brave face.

"Let me see."

Hearing Kaito's hand hurt, Amber immediately grabbed his hand and examined it carefully.

"I'll go back and get some ointment for you."

Seeing the bruises on Kaito's hand, Amber decided to go back now and get some ointment for him.

Although the injury wasn't severe, he had gotten hurt protecting her, so she had to make sure he was healed.

"You two should head back first. I'll go ahead and check if there are any more Lawachurls."

Seeing the two of them, and remembering he had just been following them, Kaeya decided not to say anything more.

Afterwards, he continued walking forward.

"Thank you, Kaeya."

Having almost forgotten about Kaeya, Amber offered her thanks to his retreating back, while Kaeya waved his hand without turning around.

Looks like I'll have to change my plan? Just pretend to meet them at the city gate?

Standing on the tree and watching the two below, Wendy thought to herself.
