Chapter 66: Setting a Trap for the Traveler
"Not bad, you've indeed made progress recently."
After hearing Nahida's perspective, Felina nodded with a smile. "Your idea is indeed appropriate, but there's still room for improvement."
"You proposed providing jobs for the desert people and paying them wages, which I fully agree with."
"But have you considered what they'll do with their wages after receiving them?"
"Currently, the passages between the rainforest and the desert are closed. Resources in the desert are limited. Even if they have money, there's nowhere for them to purchase goods."
"Therefore, we should encourage Fontaine's merchants to do business in the desert, establish various shops, and sell essential goods like food, clothing, and medicine."
"This way, we can gradually stimulate the economy and promote local development, ensuring that the desert people have food, clothing, and shelter."
"Once they can secure these basics for themselves and their families through work, they can begin pursuing culture, art, and aspirations. Only then can the chaotic environment start to improve."
"I see! As expected, Teacher's thinking is far-reaching! I've learned something new today!" Nahida exclaimed, her eyes wide with admiration.
Afternoon.
In the office, Nahida was still assisting Felina with her work.
Even Furina, influenced by Felina, occasionally emerged to offer her opinions.
Though Furina's suggestions were often not the optimal solution, her willingness to contribute was already a significant change, which made Felina quite pleased.
"Wow, this is incredible!"
Nahida exclaimed in amazement.
"What is it?" Felina asked, turning toward the source of the excitement.
"Teacher, look at this. This person is truly remarkable."
Nahida handed Felina a document.
Felina scanned the content, which detailed the following:
Recently, Fontaine had seen the rise of a magazine author. Early on, his articles were witty and humorous, quickly amassing a large fan base.
Recently, however, this author had started promoting products through his magazine articles.
Using his engaging writing style and clever marketing strategies, he had sold a significant number of goods.
Gradually, many manufacturers began to collaborate with him, paying him placement fees. He handled the promotion while the manufacturers took care of production, personnel, and sales. For every product sold, he earned a portion of the profit.
"In just one month, he sold over 100,000 items and contributed nearly 100 million Mora in taxes. Truly an extraordinary individual."
"If he continues at this pace, it won't be long before he becomes one of Fontaine's top tycoons!" Nahida marveled.
However, after reading the document, Felina's expression darkened.
She immediately called in her intelligence personnel.
"Investigate this person. Focus on whether the goods he's selling are counterfeit or substandard. If any such issues are found, launch a major campaign to stir public dissatisfaction against him, then have the relevant departments impose heavy penalties!"
"Understood!"
The intelligence officer bowed and left.
This left Nahida and Furina bewildered.
By all accounts, a major taxpayer like this man was making a huge contribution to the country. People like him would be welcomed with open arms anywhere—so why was Felina so quick to suppress him?
Curious and eager to learn, Nahida immediately asked Felina for an explanation.
"Such opportunities are rare, so I'll take this chance to teach you a lesson," Felina replied.
Felina began explaining her reasoning to Nahida:
"Let's use clothing as an example. How many steps does it take for a piece of clothing to go from the factory to the consumer?"
"The factory produces the clothing—a major distributor takes the goods from the factory—smaller shop owners purchase the goods wholesale from the major distributor to sell in their physical stores."
"But this content creator, who specializes in product promotions, bypasses all those middle steps. The manufacturer ships the clothing directly to the customer through logistics."
"And what's the key issue here?"
"In the traditional process, the major distributor would need to hire people to transport the goods, right?"
"Then the shop owner would need to rent a store to sell the clothing, correct?"
"And since they have a store, the shop owner would need to hire sales assistants, wouldn't they?"
"This was a complete chain where manufacturers, major distributors, transport workers, shop owners, landlords renting out storefronts, and shop assistants could all earn a living."
"Even if a piece of clothing with a production cost of 1,000 Mora ends up selling for 3,000 Mora by the time it reaches the customer, this process still allows many people to make a living and support their families."
"But now, this content creator bypasses all these steps, allowing manufacturers to send goods directly to consumers."
"By doing this, they've taken away the livelihood of countless major distributors, transport workers, shop owners, landlords, and shop assistants."
"If the content creator sold the clothing at a reasonable price—say, 1,500 or 2,000 Mora, giving the public affordability and convenience—it would still be acceptable."
Felina pointed at the file with visible anger. "But look at this! The goods cost only 1,000 Mora to produce, shops sell them for 3,000 Mora, yet this person sells them for 3,000 or even 5,000 Mora—more expensive than the shops!"
"For goods with a 1,000 Mora production cost, they sell them for 4,000 Mora, taking a cut of 2,500 Mora and leaving the manufacturer with only 1,500."
"They've stolen the livelihoods of countless people without offering the public any real convenience or affordability."
"Now you understand why I can't tolerate this person and must bring them back down to size?" Felina looked at Nahida, waiting for her response.
After hearing Felina's explanation, Furina and Nahida were deeply shaken, needing a moment to process what they had just learned.
Furina, increasingly sharp-minded, quickly connected the dots.
She exclaimed, "What this person is doing is essentially taking away countless livelihoods and concentrating wealth that should have been earned by the public into their own pockets."
Nahida, equally stunned, added, "So, in essence, they're exploiting the public's interests to enrich themselves!"
"Exactly." Felina nodded with satisfaction. "They've taken the money that should have been earned by the people and hoarded it. So what happens to the distributors, shop owners, and sales assistants who were part of the original supply chain?"
"If this person sells 100,000 items in a month, how many small distributors, shop owners, and sales assistants lose their livelihoods?"
"If we allow this person to grow unchecked, they could sell 500,000 or even 1 million items a month in the future. How many lives would that affect then?"
"A leading content creator in product promotion can impact countless livelihoods. Most people don't realize this, but as rulers, our perspective must be forward-looking."
Felina tapped the file on the table for emphasis. "Anyone who competes with the public for profit and harms their interests must be suppressed and cannot be allowed to run unchecked."
She then patted Nahida on the shoulder. "I hope you'll remember today's lesson well."
"I will! Thank you, Teacher!" Nahida responded with a bright smile. Though she often referred to Felina as her teacher, in truth, their relationship was more equal—they were teacher and student, but also friends.
Spending time with Felina brought Nahida joy and allowed her to learn a great deal. She admired and respected Felina deeply.
The desert's integration into Fontaine was proceeding smoothly.
Next, as long as Fontaine continued supporting the desert, fostering exchanges between its people and the desert inhabitants, and strategically spreading the idea that "Lady Hydro Archon should govern the desert," the plan would solidify.
As such sentiments gained momentum and public opinion in the desert shifted, a referendum in the desert would seal its integration into Fontaine.
Having resolved the matter in Liyue, Felina began planning her next move.
It had already been stated that the Hydro Archon's Gnosis was with the Oratrice in Fontaine, and Felina had no intentions of pursuing the Dendro Archon's Gnosis for now. However, the Gnoses of Cryo, Electro, Anemo, Pyro, and Geo from other nations were all on her agenda.
Reports had surfaced that Mondstadt was experiencing a dragon calamity, marking the beginning of its storyline.
After a brief moment of thought, Felina decided it was the perfect time to visit Mondstadt during its period of unrest to seek out the Anemo Archon for a trade—her Gnosis.
This time, she remembered to inform Neuvillette before departing. Afterward, she began her journey to Mondstadt. Since Mondstadt was located to the northeast of Liyue, she would have to pass through Liyue first.
During her brief stop in Liyue, Felina also claimed her reward from Zhongli—the Geo Archon's Gnosis.
—
Your name is Lumine, and you and your twin brother, Aether, are travelers who have journeyed across countless worlds.
Many years ago, you both arrived in this land known as Teyvat. Just as you were preparing to leave, an unfamiliar god appeared and blocked your way.
This god took your brother, leaving you to fall into a deep slumber.
Now that you have awakened, your brother is nowhere to be found. Thus, you embark on a journey across the seven nations of Teyvat, seeking the Archons to uncover clues about your brother's whereabouts.
"Lumine, it's time to go!"
Standing on the beach near Cape Oath, a tiny white-haired floating companion waved at you.
That's right. This duo was none other than the Traveler, Lumine, and her guide, Paimon.
At this moment, the events of the game's opening storyline were unfolding.
"Coming!"
You smiled, nodding as you followed.
"Just ahead lies Mondstadt, the nation of freedom—a city of songs and wine," Paimon explained as she floated ahead, guiding you through the forest toward Mondstadt City.
However, before you had traveled far, you noticed a girl with blue and white hair, dressed in a white floral sundress, sitting on a tree stump by the roadside.
She appeared to have been waiting for you. As soon as she saw you, a delighted expression crossed her face. She immediately stood up and approached.
"Hello, Lumine, Paimon," she greeted, extending her hand.
Both you and Paimon froze in surprise. "You know us?"
"Of course."
The blue-and-white-haired girl tilted her head with a smile. "Not only do I know who you are, but I also know that you come from another world. You're now traveling to seek out the Archons and find your brother, right?"
In the forest, Lumine and Paimon were instantly on guard upon hearing the girl's words. Their expressions changed dramatically.
Lumine immediately adopted a defensive stance and questioned, "Who are you, and how do you know this?"
The girl, seemingly unbothered by Lumine's wariness, chuckled lightly. "How do I know? That's simple. It's because I'm one of the Seven Archons."
"What?"
This revelation left Lumine and Paimon even more shocked. "You're one of the Seven Archons? This is Mondstadt—does that mean you're the Anemo Archon?"
The self-proclaimed Archon shook her head with a faint smile. "That's not important. What matters is that I can help you find your brother. If all goes well, you'll meet him within a month."
Despite the seemingly good news, Lumine didn't show any signs of joy. After all, it was highly suspicious to encounter someone who knew so much about her right at the start of her journey—a supposed Archon no less—claiming they could help her find her brother.
"There's no such thing as a free lunch. What do you want from me?" Lumine asked cautiously.
"You're sharp. But I don't need anything from you," the girl replied calmly. "It's just that your journey ahead might get… exciting. I'm here to give you a heads-up so that you won't hold it against me in the future."
"In short, just travel as you wish. Follow your heart, and don't go out of your way to do anything. I promise you'll meet your brother safely."
"Well then, goodbye~"
The girl waved and, in the blink of an eye, ascended into the sky and disappeared.
"Uh… she just showed up out of nowhere, said some baffling things, and then left on her own. What a strange person," Paimon remarked, throwing her hands up in confusion.
The two exchanged glances, both equally perplexed. After a moment's pause, they decided to continue on their way.
However, less than half an hour into their walk through the forest, they encountered another unusual situation.
In a clearing ahead, a boy wearing a green hat and cloak crouched before a large teal dragon with two black spikes on its back.
"Don't be afraid. I've returned," the green-clad boy spoke in a soothing voice, as if trying to calm the dragon.
As he reached out to touch the dragon, whose body emitted ominous black fumes, he seemed intent on healing it.
But just as he was about to make contact, the dragon noticed Lumine and Paimon. Already uneasy, the dragon appeared startled by the newcomers. It let out an angry roar, ignoring the green boy entirely, and took off into the sky.
As it ascended, the black miasma flowing from the dragon seemed to seep into the green boy's body.
Lumine and Paimon clearly saw the pain etched across the boy's face.
Seeing his condition, they were about to ask if he was all right, but the boy, with a flicker of anger in his eyes, merely glanced at them before hastily pursuing the dragon. Without a word, he disappeared into the depths of the forest.
"Huh?"
Staring at the scene before them, Paimon and Lumine exchanged puzzled glances once again, their expressions mirroring their confusion.
"What's going on? We've barely been on this journey for half an hour, and we've already encountered two strange people," Paimon exclaimed.
Neither of them realized that, from this moment on, they had unwittingly stepped into a carefully orchestrated web of schemes designed just for them.
