Chapter 622: The Painful Betrayal
"Did I do it?" Wu He opened his eyes and looked around with an innocent look on his face.
Xin Yan's cold face broke into a warm smile, seeing him looking at her. She reached out to ruffle his hair and replied, "You did well. Now, besides making your body stronger, you should also focus on getting used to meditating for a long time without getting disturbed."
Seeing Xin Yan's closeness, Wu He appeared bashful but nodded like an obedient child. Seeing his blushing face, Noah narrowed his eyes but chose to stay silent.
"Dear, Mistress helped out despite her busy schedule. Shouldn't you thank her?" Wu Ping smiled at her son dangerously, causing his embarrassment to vanish. Wu He was aware of when that smile of hers was loving and when it was dangerous.
With hurried movements, he expressed his gratitude to Xin Yan with a bow before leaving the room. In his panic, the boy even failed to notice Noah, who was also standing there.
Xin Yan chuckled, seeing the trotting boy leaving her room.
"I am sorry, Miss Xin Yan, Master Noah. Wu He is too mischievous. I will make sure to discipline him properly." Seeing her son running away without even greeting Noah, Wu Ping apologized in his stead, but the two of them waved their hands to show that they did not mind his actions.
"You two should continue. I will also take my leave. Once you are free, come to see me in my room, Xin Yan." Noah also did not intend to stay any longer and left the room, leaving two blushing women behind who seemed to have misunderstood his words.
…
While strolling around the sect with no aim, Noah wondered what to do next. He continued to walk until he arrived in front of one of the rooms whose front gate was left open.
Peering inside the room, Noah saw a young woman sitting at the edge of the bed, looking outside with a lost look in her eyes. Maybe it was because she did not feel like it or she forgot, Shisan's face was not hidden by a veil.
Noah noticed that her clothes were also not like her usual robes. She was wearing a loose two-piece outfit that looked more like relaxing wear.
"I see you have recovered well." Noah decided to announce his presence since the woman appeared to have yet to notice him.
His voice surprised Shisan as she jerked a bit before returning to normal. She looked back at Noah, but her eyes held no emotions, only a deep sense of void as if looking at a dead body.
"You…" Noah sighed, seeing the look in her eyes, but he could not bring any words of comfort to the woman. He did not say anything and started walking closer to Shisan under her watchful eyes and sat beside her without speaking.
Shisan watched his every move silently. Seeing him sitting beside her, she turned to look away from him once more.
"…"
The two of them sat there without speaking for a long time. Noah also looked outside the window at the same point where Shisan was looking. Outside was a tree on which a young bird was making a new nest with another bird.
"Why…" Finally, Shisan broke the silence. Even though she spoke very slowly, her voice came out rough and choked. "Why did you save me?"
Asking her question, Shisan looked at Noah with an unfriendly look. Noah did not answer her immediately and looked deeply into her eyes. She was blaming him for saving her, and those words were not spoken out of anger. She really seemed to have intended on dying.
"Why do you hate being saved by me?" Noah asked with narrowed eyes. He did not preach to her about why she was saying such things or anything else. He first wanted to gauge her thoughts.
"Young Miss wanted me to die, so I should be dead." This time, Shisan's voice was hollower than before. "She gave me this life, and she has all the right to take it away."
As she spoke, the shadow of a very young girl flashed through her eyes. The girl's eyes matched her lifeless gaze. She was drenched in the rain that was pouring down on her, but the blood on the blade in her hands refused to be washed away.
Behind the girl was a row of countless bodies of children her age, and before her were more of them, but they were more alive than the ones behind her.
"You had no right to interfere in her orders." Shisan snapped out of her daze and continued.
"If you wanted to follow this order of hers so closely, why do you look so hurt? So betrayed?" Noah spoke sharply and firmly, his voice tearing through all the defenses around her heart.
"What do you know!" As his words struck her, Shisan snapped in rage, her aura flaring up within the confines of the room as she glared at Noah with bloodshot eyes.
Noah looked deeply into her red eyes, unfazed by her aura, and reached out to wipe the tears that were forming in her eyes.
"Why do you think Song Liu wanted you to die?" Noah asked again, this time his voice softer than before. "Did she tell you that? I only remember seeing her attacking you… before leaving with those people…"
"That is the problem!!" Shisan roared, her voice hoarse from the strain on her vocal cords. "She did not tell me, you, or anyone anything!!!"
"She did not say anything to me… and she… discarded me!" At this point, Shisan's knees collapsed with her momentum as she broke into a teary mess at Noah's knees. "Why did she abandon me?"
She asked Noah with a look that could pierce the heart of any person who saw it. Even Noah felt a pang of pain in his heart, seeing her like that. He raised his head and reached out to run his hand through her hair.
"Why…" Shisan continued to sob in silence as she thought about the 'betrayal' of her young Miss.
