Chapter 743: Mo Ji

With a low, harmonic hum, the artifact activated, its runes lighting up in gentle waves of blue. The air shimmered around it, and with a rush of wind, it lifted off the platform—ascending into the sky.

"How could you let them go like this?" Seeing the carriage take off into the skies, Zhao Yanchen directed his rage towards Ling Ruoyin.

Instead of speaking out in the open directly, she sent a direct mental transmission and said something that jolted him awake out of his rage and pride.

Seeing the look of fear in his eyes, the woman snorted inwardly without showing any reaction on the surface, "Shall we take this someplace else?"

She directed her attention towards the leaders of the empire standing behind her partner and spoke with a cold yet polite tone.

With their unanimous agreement, everyone moved towards the castle.

While the royal estate of the Quan Empire was stirred with the arrival of the representatives of the ancient families, Noah and his group were flying above the territory of the empire.

The silence in the carriage was prickling for Wen Ji; she held her head low and stared at Noah and Xin from the corner of her eye, her body fidgeting in her seat as if she was holding something in.

"Wen Ji…" Xin Yan broke the silence, making the woman snap her head up while jerking in panic, "What is your real name?"

"…umm." Wen Ji's eyes went wide as if she had been caught stealing something. She noticed that the woman was not simply confirming a guess; she knew for certain that Wen Ji was not her real name.

She turned to look at Noah, sitting beside Xin Yan, opposite to her. Seeing the amused smile on his calm face, she flinched before taking a deep breath and answering.

"I am—my real name is Mo Ji." With a stammer in her voice, Wen Ji introduced herself once more.

Xin Yan gave a small nod, as if confirming a suspicion that had long since taken root in her mind. Her eyes remained steady on Mo Ji, no judgment in them—only quiet expectation.

"I thought so," she said simply.

Mo Ji lowered her head again, her fingers tightening around the edge of her robe. Her heart was beating faster now, not with fear exactly, but with the heaviness of something long buried resurfacing.

Then Noah spoke.

His voice, warm yet distant, "I have only heard a few things about the Spirit farers, and from the information I have gathered, they are very reclusive and do not want the world to know about their family."

Taking what kind of work they do into mind, Noah did not find it any weirder that they would think that way.

But the reason Xin Yan asked Wen—Mo Ji that was because meeting the people from two of the six hidden families, Noah recalled that there was another hidden family that went by the name of the Mo family, and from the information Elysia gave him, they were indeed aligned with the spirit farers.

Mo Ji's head snapped up in shock.

"You… you knew?" She asked, her voice faint, almost a whisper.

Noah didn't respond immediately. He looked at her—not unkindly, but with the sharp gaze of someone who'd seen more than he let on.

"I didn't know at first," he admitted. "But after meeting the representatives from the Zhao and Ling families, it came back to me. Someone told me once… the Mo Family was one of the six hidden clans. They also had ties to the Spirit Farers. In fact, they were the biggest family of spirit farers who had such great control over the realm of mirrors that they could even gain access to the netherworld, more commonly known as…"

Noah paused, his eyes never leaving the woman before him, as he continued with a voice that echoed through the carriage, making hearts palpitate, "The Realm Of The Dead."

Mo Ji's lips parted slightly, but no words came out. Her fingers trembled as she gripped the jade slip Noah had given her earlier, as though it might anchor her in place.

"I won't press you for the details," Noah said, his voice steady but laced with quiet weight. "Whatever burden you carry, whatever secrets you're hiding—it's not my place, nor am I interested in knowing them."

"What I would like to know is…" Noah leaned forward slightly with an ever-calming and warm voice, making sure Wen Ji did not feel any threat or uneasiness from him. "Why were you alone?"

The words were gentle, but they cut deep. "You're not just from the Mo Family," he continued. "Someone like you shouldn't have been allowed to wander the world without protection. Not with who you are. So I ask you… why?"

Mo Ji sighed, the breath leaving her body like it carried the weight of years. Her eyes dropped, and the faint light inside the carriage caught the shadow that crossed her face.

"It's the rule of our family," she said at last, voice low but unwavering. "For those of us born into the main lineage… we must leave."

Xin Yan raised an eyebrow but didn't interrupt.

Mo Ji continued, "When we come of age, we're cast out into the world. Alone.

No guards. No escorts. No tokens to mark us.

It is believed that the ones who guide spirits must first experience what it means to walk among the living—unseen, unknown, and… vulnerable.

The best we can do is make pairs with people we trust since the spirit farers all around the world act in a similar manner."

Her fingers traced the rim of her sleeve slowly, as if drawing comfort from the motion.

"The trial lasts fifty years. No matter where we go, we're not to contact the family or seek their help. When the time ends, we're expected to return—alive, wiser, changed."

She paused.

"If we survive."

Noah's eyes narrowed slightly. "And if you don't?"

Mo Ji flinched at the question. Her lips trembled, but she forced herself to speak.
