Chapter 165: The day of the party [4]
As the evening wore on, the wine flowed and the dishes kept coming: delicate cuts of meat, roasted vegetables and pastries filled with rich cream and sweet, spiced fruit.
Brandon leaned back in his chair, his black tuxedo relaxing slightly as he looked at the spread of food on the table.
"Brandon..." Naevora muttered as she picked up a delicate roll of smoked cheese wrapped in leaf with its surface glistening with a drizzle of honey.
"Try this." She held it out to him, her fingers hovering close to his lips.
"It's got a kick you might actually like. Unless you're too fancy for it now, Lord Herald."
Brandon smiled dryly and leaned forward, accepting the bite directly from her fingers, his teeth grazing the edge of the roll.
The smoky cheese melted on his tongue, mingling with the sweet honey and a hint of spice, and he chewed slowly, savoring the flavor.
"That was good."
She nodded her head and they continued eating.
Florence sighed in her heart that she can't share the joy of tasting food with him.
She continued to eat the food with the bland taste just to fill her stomach.
Brandon glanced at her and leaned forward to whisper "Are you alright, Florence?"
Hearing his voice, she looked up to him and replied "It's ok... I already told you, I am used to this."
Callista looked at Brandon sandwiched between Naevora and Florence, making it hard for her to approach him.
'I should have come to the table earlier for a seat beside him.'
A few minutes passed by as they completed their meals.
Naevora is the first one to stand up "Alright then, I am taking my leave. Brandon, see you tomorrow."
Brandon glanced up at her and nodded "Later."
With that, Naevora and Yverine left the party.
Using the chance, Callista moved to sit beside him on the table.
Brandon gave her a soft smile before continuing with his dessert.
A few minutes later, Aveline also stood up and patted Charlotte's shoulder "Char, See you later then."
Charlotte glanced at her and gave a curt nod.
Aveline looked at Brandon and spoke with a smile "Brandon, Let's meet another time."
With a smile, he nodded his head and glanced at Clarisse "See you later, Senior."
Clarisse returned a gentle smile, "Until next time, Brandon,"
The two women stepped away from the tablem, making their way through the grand hall, their heels clicking softly against the marble floor, as they passed under the golden arches and out into the cool night air.
The parking lot is a sea full of sleek vehicles and Aveline's car, a streamlined silver sedan waited at the edge of the lot.
Aveline slid into the driver's seat, her gown rustling as she settled in, her fingers brushing the leather steering wheel as she started the engine.
Clarisse took the passenger seat, her white gown pooling around her as she adjusted it.
Aveline glanced at Clarisse, her green eyes narrowing slightly as she tapped her fingers on the steering wheel, "Clarisse…"
"Hm?" Clarisse turned to look at her, her crimson eyes blinking in surprise "Master?"
Aveline's frown deepened, "What do you think of Brandon?"
Clarisse raised an eyebrow in surprise but quickly recovered and leaned back in her seat, her fingers smoothing the fabric of her gown as she spoke, "He gave me a good first impression,"
"I admire how he handles everything thrown at him, especially as the only male awakener. That alone takes resilience most wouldn't have."
She paused, her lips curving into a faint smile as she continued, "He's already reached D-rank, which is commendable for someone so young and under such scrutiny. Beyond that… he seems like a sweet guy. Friendly, approachable, always has that sweet smile on his face to lighten the mood."
Aveline's amusement grew, her lips curling into a sly smile as she tapped her fingers rhythmically on the steering wheel, "Do you… like this boy, Clarisse?"
Clarisse's smile faltered as she shot Aveline a skeptical look "If you're asking if I love him, no,"
"Why do you ask, Master? What's this about?"
Aveline let out a soft chuckle as she leaned back, her hands now resting loosely on the wheel. "Just wondering about asking his hand in marriage for you,"
Clarisse's jaw dropped, her eyes widening in disbelief as a faint blush tinged her cheeks "Master, what the hell are you saying?"
"He's younger than me, a junior at the Academy, and I barely know him! You can't just—marriage? Seriously?"
Aveline shrugged as she started the car and pulled out of the parking space, "So what?" she said, her eyes flicking to the road ahead.
"He's got looks, status, and talent. And he's the only male awakener. That's a rare combination, Clarisse."
Clarisse facepalmed, her fingers pressing against her forehead as she let out a groan "Master, you…" she muttered, her voice trailing off as she shook her head.
"You're unbelievable. I'm not looking for a husband."
Aveline let out a hearty chuckle as she navigated the car through city streets, "Just saying, he's already got powerful people beside him—Charlotte, Florence, Naevora, even you sitting at his table tonight."
"I wouldn't be surprised if he created a faction of his own in the future. A man like that, with that kind of pull… he's going places."
Clarisse's eyes squinted slightly, "If he created a faction, would you join his side?"
Aveline shrugged and smiled wryly as she glanced at Clarisse, "Of course. If not, Char would beat me to a pulp and drag me into it anyway. Hahaha."
"Charlotte is his big sister, and I owe her more than I can repay. If she's in, I'm in. Simple as that."
"So, if you do fall for him, go for it. Don't let Charlotte or anyone else scare you off. Life's too short to hesitate."
Clarisse rolled her eyes, her blush returning faintly as she shot Aveline a mock glare "Don't joke with me, Master,"
"Besides, there are rumors he's dating the younger heir of the Bleaufort family. Florence's daughter, apparently. That's probably why she was glued to his side all night."
Aveline was amused to hear this "Hoh, that makes sense. Hmm... I see."
---
"Are you sure, Lord Herald?"
Looking at Callista, Brandon nodded his head "Don't worry. You can leave.. I will come to Church at a later time."
"Thank you for coming here for me."
Hearing this, her gaze softened and happiness flooded her heart "Oh Lord Herald, I would do anything for you... this is just a small task."
"If you need any help, just tell me. Now then, I will take my leave since Charlotte is here to protect you."
As she spoke, she glanced at Charlotte out of the corner of her eye and stood up.
Brandon raised his hand and patted her head, making her blush slightly as she closed her eyes, enjoying the pat.
As he retracted his hand, she smiled brightly "Well then, I will take my leave too, Lord Herald."
Soon, she also left the party.
Brandon glanced at Florence and Charlotte "Then shall we also leave?"
Florence nodded her head and Charlotte gently stood up "Hm."
---
The three of them walked toward their car parked in the parking lot.
Charlotte reached the car first, her cloak swaying as she opened the driver's door.
Her eyes flickered to Brandon and Florence as she slid into the driver's seat.
Brandon opened the back door for Florence, his smile gentle as he gestured for her to enter.
Florence entered in first and patted the seat beside her "Come here."
Brandon nodded and sat beside her as he closed the door.
Florence wasted no time, her body shifting closer to Brandon as she wrapped her hands around his arm from the side, hugging him tightly.
Her curves pressed against him, the warmth of her body seeping through his tuxedo, and her hair brushed his shoulder as she rested her head against his shoulder.
"You were amazing tonight," she murmured in a soft voice.
Brandon's smile softened, his arm slipping around her shoulders.
She pulled back slightly as she took her phone, "Let's take some selfies,"
Her eyes sparkled as she held her mobile up, "We need to send them to Eira later."
Brandon smiled dryly and replied "You sure you want me in these? I'm not exactly photogenic after all that wine and food."
Florence rolled her eyes as she nudged him playfully, "Oh, please. You look good no matter what. Now smile."
She held the phone up, angling it to capture them both, her head tilting to rest against his, her hair brushing his cheek.
Florence snapped the first photo and swiped to check the photo.
Seeing the result, she smiled in satisfaction "Perfect, now let's take more."
Charlotte, glancing at them in the rearview mirror, frowned slightly and her green eyes suddenly turned blue.
'Too close. Should I kill her?'
She thoughtfully tapped her fingers on the steering wheel 'Hmm.. But Kael seems to like her presence.'
'I already had to deal with his ex-girlfriend and... now this woman too?'
'No, for now let's just watch...'
