Chapter 58: Reaching the top
Wen Ran's heart remained calm as he carefully assessed the situation. I need to be careful of these people, he thought, Not only did this trial come without warning, but I can also feel that the aura of the people ahead of me is somewhat suspicious.
He kept climbing, step after step, as the endless stairs stretched before him. So far, he could swear he had climbed several mountains worth of steps. It's fine, I have energy for a few more, he reassured himself. After that, if I still can't keep up, I'll push myself to the point where they'll beg for me to join the sect.
His eyes gleamed with a competitive fire—the kind he hadn't felt in a long time. After all, he was in the body of a teenager now, and despite the years of tempering his heart and pushing aside the feeling of competition as he grew older, he now had the chance to relive those memories of youthful ambition.
If someone had been observing the situation from the side, they would have seen Wen Ran at least ten thousand steps ahead of the brother and sister duo. The sweat dripped from their bodies, and their heavy panting could be heard from afar. The duo barely had any strength left to keep going.
"Jiejie... I..." Feng Chenxi pushed himself past his limit, but no matter what he did, his legs seemed to betray him. He glanced ahead, but the path was unknown and uncertain. He didn't even understand anymore why he was trying so hard. Doubt filled his heart. Would those people even help us? Did that person lead us into a trap? The unshakable feeling of unease gnawed at him.
His vision blurred, and he tried to reach out to his sister, but no matter what he did, her body seemed to get farther away. She couldn't hear him, and his strength failed him as the gap between them grew wider.
Feng Yulan was in the zone, her focus fixed solely on the path ahead. Her legs had long since given up on her, yet she somehow found the strength to keep going. She could feel something warm inside of her, a strength that kept her moving forward. If anyone were to inspect her right now, they would notice that inside her dantian, a strange-shaped egg lay dormant, glowing with an azure light. It was likely the only reason she could keep pushing herself, the source of her inner strength.
But after another fifty thousand steps, her vision turned dark, and as she fell to the cold ground, she couldn't shake the thought: I can't give up. I must catch up to him. I can't show weakness...
Soon, only Wen Ran remained standing, though even he started to pant heavily, the strain catching up to him. His body, though transformed, still bore the weight of the journey.
Meanwhile, Xiao Mo, lazily stretched and yawned as she lay on his shoulder. She opened her eyes, feeling slightly puzzled, not fully understanding where they were, but the warmth of Wen Ran's body brought her comfort. She could feel herself calming down, the rhythmic heat making her drowsy, and soon, she was on the verge of falling asleep again.
"You damn rabbit, go and walk on your own!" Wen Ran cursed as he noticed Xiao Mo wake up. Any hint of change in heart he had toward the beast was gone. He couldn't believe how lazy she was. Here he was, working his ass off, climbing who knows how many mountains by now, and the scenery was starting to make him want to puke. He could have sworn he had passed the same scratch in the wall for the thousandth time…
But Xiao Mo simply ignored him, and when she noticed Wen Ran was about to fall, she bit his ear. That sudden, sharp pain was enough to wake him up.
Wen Ran wanted to spank the damn rabbit, but at the same time, he felt thankful. Without that little pain, he might have fainted from exhaustion. This trial—or whatever the people ahead of him had planned—was one of the most annoying trials he had ever endured.
"Congratulations."
Suddenly, when Wen Ran felt that all hope of staying awake would be lost, he heard the words he had been eager to hear for so long. Ahead of him, the path finally straightened, and the woman in the lead took her last step, turning to smile brightly at him.
But that smile wasn't just a smile. If Wen Ran was right, there was something more to it. He could feel excitement and amazement in her eyes and on her face. It was the kind of expression that screamed just how excited the group was to find a talent worth nurturing.
With his lungs almost burning, Wen Ran took his last step, and ahead of him, he saw a small bamboo house, surrounded by trees and lush greenery. But the moment he placed both of his feet on flat ground, an immense spiritual energy washed over him. It was as if the energy cleansed him from the inside, returning the strength he had lost and filling his dantian to the brim. The thick crimson rivers in his body seemed to expand, flooding with powerful spiritual energy.
Then, the entire place trembled, and Wen Ran's body shook slightly, unaware of when or how he had risen to the second circle of the Spirit Flow Stage.
This place… He could feel the sheer intensity of the spiritual energy concentrated here. The amount of energy is at least ten times stronger than the outside world. If I could train here... His heart burned with desire and excitement to grow stronger, the possibilities overwhelming him.
Wen Ran turned to the trio, who were watching him with smiles on their faces, their gazes focused on him as if he were a precious piece of jade. They had finally found a worthy seed.
He cupped his hands respectfully and bowed deeply to them. "Thank you for leading me all the way here, seniors. You must have had a lot of trouble because of my slow pace. I deeply apologize." His words were chosen well, his tone full of respect. The trio smiled even more deeply, feeling flattered by his words and nodding in approval.
But before they could speak, an ancient voice boomed from the bamboo house, shaking the entire area. The voice held authority and power.
"Welcome to the Heaven Shattering Sect, junior. Please come to meet me now."
