Chapter 18: Sothoryos 18

Sothoryos XIV: The Home of the Elves

From the outside, the palace was large, and the first room, where he had met the Elders, was large as well, but still small compared to what he had seen from outside. Behind the willow tree, there was a double door, which led to a hallway with large windows. Light came in through these places, illuminating everything.

Jon walked through several wide hallways within the castle. Some doors were kept open, with all kinds of rooms and decorations. Others, were kept closed. The walk was mostly quiet and without conversations. After about ten minutes, they came to a large door.

"Here you will meet the Great Old One. And as I said before, do not do anything foolish," Fyldren said seriously.

"I already said that was not my intention," Jon replied, with a small frown. Fyldren watched him for a few seconds before letting out a sigh.

"I am sorry, young human. I do not mean to upset you. In fact, my words are for… my grandfather. Grand Elder Caelyb is… well… different than you might expect from someone in his position."

"Different?"

"You will see," Fyldren said as he placed his hands on the door. His staff, to Jon's surprise, hovered at his side. He pushed, gently opening the doors, revealing the inside. Jon had to squint slightly at the light that reached him. When his vision adjusted, he could see a half-room of sorts. There were walls on either side, but no walls in front. Two pillars held up a stone roof, while a garden full of flowers was displayed in all its glory.

There were two tables inside, with chairs on one side. Furniture holding pieces of decoration: pretty vases, small trees and flowers. On the other side, there was a bastard sword hanging on the wall. The floor was a gleaming, spotless stone, which showed the reflection of things, almost like a mirror. And a little further away, sitting where the garden began, a person sat humming what sounded like a song.

"Great Old One, you have a visitor."

The man turned around, blinking, before smiling. Jon got a better look at him when he stood up. He was tall and thin, with a few wrinkles under his eyes and near his lips. He had a kind, calm expression. His hair was a pure white color, almost like snow. And his eyes, they were uneven, with one yellow and one silver.

"Ohohoho... Visitor, you say? That's strange. Not even you come to visit me, you heartless bastard!"

Jon heard Fyldren sigh tiredly.

"And what about my dear, adorable little granddaughter? She visits me less than you do, Fyldren. It was much better when you were little brats. You were always running around me, asking for stories. Tch, this old man feels hurt," Caelyb spoke quickly, even a little overly dramatic.

"You know why my sister doesn't come around much. She feels… No, wait, that's not why I came," Fyldren growled a little. "You have visitors, like I said. It's a human."

Jon was pushed slightly from behind, catching the old man's attention. The mismatched eyes fixed on him in surprise. He walked over and reached out, cupping Jon's face by his chin.

"You look just like him. My friend. Without that silly, dirty beard, though," Caelyb commented before letting go of Jon and lifting his head up with a loud laugh coming out of his mouth.

"Hahahahaha! I still remember how angry he was when I forcefully ripped it off with my hand!!"

"Erm..." Jon didn't know what to say. He felt a little nervous. He thought someone with a title like the Great Old One would be much more serious. But it was a little ridiculous. Maybe that was why Fyldren had told him not to do anything foolish.

"Tell me, boy. What's your name? You look a lot like Brandon Stark. Are you by any chance his descendant?"

"Uh... Yes. My name is Jaehaerys Targaryen, but yes, I am a descendant of Brandon Stark."

"I knew it!" Caelyb smiled happily as he looked to the side, as if he was remembering things. After a few seconds, his smile only grew bigger.

"Fyldren, go away."

"Huh?"

"Come on, out. I want to talk to the boy alone."

".... Tch," after a long silence, Fyldren clicked his tongue. "You complain about not getting visitors, but when I'm here, you kick me out. Old bastard."

"Huh? Did you say something?"

"No, nothing," Fyldren, one of the five elders of the council, snorted and left the place, closing the doors carefully.

"Come, come here, boy," Caelyb waved his hand as he walked closer to the garden. Jon followed him and sat right next to the old man, when he asked. They both stared at the flowers for a moment.

"This is my personal garden. I've tended it for thousands of years. What do you think?"

"It's magnificent. I've never seen so many different flowers together."

"Are you from the North? Brandon mentioned that there aren't too many flowers where he lived. A cold and unforgiving place, he said."

"There are flowers, like blue roses, that are the most beautiful in the North."

Caelyb nodded and murmured before saying, "Even in the most inhospitable places, a flower can grow. It just takes time and love to care for such places."

"Boy, what brought you here? How did you get here?"

Jon sighed a little. He was already feeling tired repeating his story. But, he did it anyway. Slowly, he told the same story he had recited to other elves. It didn't take him long, and when he finished, he looked at Caelyb, who looked ahead with a small smile. Jon simply stayed silent, not being disrespectful.

"It's amazing how fate works. Brandon also had a journey before he got here. He told me his stories, of his travels that began on a ship heading west from where he lived. It took him years to get here, going around the world," Caelyb said as he stood up.

"Come, boy. There's something you have to do."

"Something I have to do?"

"Brandon asked me a favor before he died of old age," Caelyb said seriously, stopping his step just to the side of a tree with blue leaves. He reached out his hand, taking Jon's and placing it on the trunk.

Jon's eyes widened as he read the words in the system's pop-up window. They were bold, oversized words. Then a second later, another appeared, and another, and another.

Jon's vision filled with pop-ups as his body froze. His head began to ache as his eyes slowly closed, not without seeing the world spinning around him. Eventually, everything went completely black as he fell forward.

Caelyb immediately grabbed him as he muttered.

"I just hope that idiot was right. I don't want the boy to blame me."
