Chapter 21: Sothoryos 21

Sothoryos XVI

The sounds of his heart were like the rumble of a thousand drums, like the gallop of a hundred horses. Over and over, echoing in his ears. The sound of his blood passing through his veins was like the wildest river, while the feeling of his body was like having a great rock on top of him. Jon never thought he could feel his body like he did now: the position of every bone, vein and organ. The heartbeat and the blood circulating. Everything was so unreal at that moment.

He felt scared, because his heart was beating faster and faster.

"Don't take too long. Your heart might explode."

Caelyb's words echoed in his head again, causing more fear. He didn't want to die. Not now, not even in several years. He had come so far. He had found so many things. He wanted to go back and see his brothers and all his family.

"Come on... Come on... After so much, you can't die now," Jon told himself. He tried to move, because he thought it was necessary, but Caelyb's words echoed in his mind once more.

"Circulation... what should go down, now goes up... what should go one way, now goes the other way..."

"Wait..." Jon thought as he stopped trying to move his body. Brandon's memories appeared at the front of his mind at that moment. Those memories, were not like watching a story from an observer's perspective. No, they were as if he had been Brandon Stark. He could feel how to move his weapons. The way he ran, even the way he ran had been things he could feel.

Jon eliminated any memory, listening to his heartbeat and bloodstream in absolute blackness.

"Out... Out... Out!" Jon thought as he began to let go of those sounds. Little by little, each rumbling sound in his ears, faded away. He ignored the pressure he felt on his heart. He ignored the weight he felt on his body. Everything was ignored, until something small appeared. It was like a thread. A very thin and bright thread that seemed to move upwards.

He didn't understand how he was able to see that. But he didn't care too much at that moment.

"... what should go down, now goes up," using all his willpower, Jon took control of that thread, making it go down instead of up. When that happened, a second thread appeared. When he performed the previous procedure, two ice cubes appeared. So, Jon continued like this, over and over again, countless times. He didn't know how much time passed while he did that, over and over again, reversing the directions in which those bright threads moved. Finally, a sun was born in the darkness. A dazzling light created from what seemed like thousands and thousands of small threads, spinning as if it were a vortex.

Jon felt tired seeing that ball of light made of thin threads. Thousands of them! If before it was a difficult job to manipulate those loose threads, one by one, this was on another level. But still, he didn't give up. He was already on his way to accomplishing the task, he couldn't give up.

So, with all the willpower he had left, he began his work.

Fail... Fail... Fail... Fail... and he kept failing, over and over again. Every time he put a thread in the wrong direction, the others would drag him back. He felt frustrated by what was happening. He didn't quite understand.

"Come on, Jon. You did it before... you can do it with this..."

This time, he tried to move it all together. All those thousands and thousands of thin threads that seemed like energy, he wanted to move them all at once.

And so, he failed again.

Failed again.

Jon wanted to pull his hair out by force.

"No... No... think. I can't give up," Jon inhaled slowly, very slowly. He had more control over his body, so he relaxed once more. But now, he decided to listen to everything again. His heart was beating more normally, but he still felt pressure. He focused especially on his heart, since that's where that ball of light formed by the threads was.

"It's like my own heart. And those threads from before, like the blood running through my veins."

Jon felt the way the previous threads moved. Some went up, others went down, but it was in the opposite direction to when he first saw them.

"Oh... That old bastard!" Jon screamed in his mind, angry as he realized the problem.

"What should turn in one direction, now does it in another... That's not exactly true! He fooled me!" Jon wanted to hit Caelyb, but now he had to solve his problem. He used all his control and will to start moving the threads that formed the ball of light. This time, however, he didn't just do it in one direction. He split it, making one group of threads spin clockwise, while the other group went counterclockwise. It wasn't easy, of course. He didn't even know how long it took him to do it, but when he finally did it, he felt his heart beating normally, while all the threads now formed a circulation system. One side went up and down, just like the other, but the ball of light now worked to store and distribute everything in an orderly fashion.

. . .

Jon opened his eyes and spat blood onto his knees. His face looked pale as he sweated profusely.

"I did it..." he said, wiping his mouth with the sleeve of his clothes.

"Huh?"

"I did it!" Jon said louder, looking at Caelyb, who had a shocked expression.

"HUH?!"

"What's wrong with you?"

"No, no, no, no! You weren't supposed to be able to do this!" Caelyb said out loud. His eyes were wide as he grabbed Jon's wrist and closed his eyes as he placed two fingers on the wrist. Within seconds, he let go of Jon.

"Amazing... My plan was to help you. To get your mana circulation back to normal when you were in trouble, but this is..."

"Damn it, old man! I thought I was about to die!!"

"Hey, I'm sorry. But you wanted to keep death in mind, so you'd try harder. I never believed you'd actually make it on the first try. Tell me, how was the process?"

"Hard. It was really exhausting. I was scared at first. But then, I decided to ignore everything I could feel, until I saw what looked like a thread of light."

"Thread of light? Yes, that's what it looked like the first time. Over time, they grow little by little. It seems you were even able to use inner vision."

"Inner vision?"

"That's what's taught when someone is learning magic. You need to meditate to enter a state of stillness, where you can feel, even see the inside of your body. Only then can you begin to manipulate personal energy, or mana. And also, that's why I did what I did, so you would begin to feel your body in a different way. My method is more dangerous, but I didn't plan on letting you die."

"How long did I spend doing that?"

"See for yourself," Jon looked out into the garden as Caelyb nodded towards that spot. The sunlight was now moonlight. The almost silvery glow was visible, while the leaves of the world tree were clearly silver with blue veins.

"Hours, I see."

"With all due respect, but have you been told you're a crazy bastard?"

Caelyb closed his eyes slightly and nodded with a smile, "Yes. Brandon said that a lot."

"What do I do now?" Jon asked before letting out a sigh.

"Now you eat more and take a break. I'll tell Fyldren to prepare a room near my garden, so you can get there easily. From now on, I'll train you in magic. Mm... maybe I'll ask Mardrok to help you with physical training and sword techniques. Yeah, that sounds good."

"Oh, right. Ysiel can teach you the true language and other things. But don't bully my little granddaughter!"

"No... I don't think I can do that, even if I wanted to. I'm sure he could kill me with a wave of his hand."

".... Right."

Jon shook his head. The old man was crazier than he thought. Or maybe he just loved his granddaughter too much.
