Chapter 609: Spell Research
A majestic and sprawling chamber lay at the heart of Saratoga Castle, containing centuries of arcane knowledge. The Grand Library was a place of reverence for students and professors alike.
Legend has it, that the Grand Library houses several secret chambers, rumored to contain books and artifacts from the castle's founding. Some say that deep within its shelves lies an inheritance left behind by the great founder himself.
In one of the many study areas found throughout this ancient library, Adam sat on a high-back armchair, gazing at the fireplace beside him with a deep frown. It had been a couple of days since he had received the letter from Elorywn in Hannes City.
Since then, things haven't gone as he expected them to. He had sent a letter to the Ulier Headquarters asking permission to study the advanced runes found in the underground tunnel in Hannes City. However, his access was rejected.
He even sent a letter to the Rank 3 - Mana Vortex Magus, Krummor Grimmriver, asking him to help him with his request.
However, much to Adam's surprise, the dwarf had mentioned that those advanced runes were something that even he couldn't get access to, much less Adam who was only a Rank 2 - Mana Liquefaction Magus.
Adam immediately realized the value of the runes found in the tunnel. He didn't expect the higher-ups in the Brotherhood to gatekeep it from even the Rank 3 Magi.
The flames burning in the fireplace reflected in Adam's dark pupils as he was lost in deep thought.
So much for being a part of the Preservationists, hmph!
Now that getting my hands on those advanced runes is out of the question, I guess I'll have to visit Hannes City myself. Did the higher-ups think I won't be able to decode them myself?
Or I could wait for the Old Man to advance to the Mana Core Rank and then get my hands on those advanced runes.
Either way, it would appear that I have to make a trip across the Murky Mountains.
Adam leaned back into the chair and gazed at the high-vaulted ceilings, thinking to himself, But it is going to be difficult to make a move now.
Those bastards from the Umbra Thieves will no doubt attack me the moment I step foot out of the lands governed by Saratoga.
Sigh, why must life be so unfair? This was not even my fight, to begin with. I was sucked into this shitstorm just because I cured Brigham Flynn. Damn it!
The more he thought about the situation surrounding him, the more he felt like crying. He sat up straight in his chair, supporting his chin with his hands. He recalled the journal entries of the founder of the Brotherhood that he etched into his mind.
I can't control the things that are happening to me, but I can control how I react to them.
Let's take this one step at a time. First, I need to take care of the Umbra Thieves. Then, I need to visit Hannes City. After that, I'll find the Old Man's seclusion spot in the Murky Mountains and check up on him.
By the time I'm done with all of this, the Grand Magus Tournament will have already begun. Yes, I have more than enough time to deal with everything.
Suddenly, his eyes narrowed and he recalled another thing. There's also the Red Fists. Those bastards may have a connection with the Cult of Bones.
Ugh, there's the Cult of Bones as well… another damned headache! Why can't I just study and practice magic in peace?!
At this point, Adam truly felt like crying. He buried his face in his palms and just remained silent for a good minute.
"Speaking of headache, there are two coming my way later today," he softly muttered under his breath.
Then, his eyes lit up and he thought, No, this could be a good thing. I'll delegate everything to them and I can focus on my own work. Phew, thank goodness, Lord Grimriver kept his word.
Adam then raised his feet and languidly kept them on the table before him, not at all bothered about the decorum one had to maintain in the library. This caused a lot of nearby students to look at him with displeasure. Of course, Adam ignored them.
He grabbed his leather-bound grimoire from the table and began scribbling down notes, continuing where he had left off earlier.
The quill in his hand danced across the pages of his grimoire as he put his thoughts into words.
Experience exclusive tales on empire
In the Trial of Endurance, time had been distorted to a great degree. Moreover, the illusion didn't just affect my sense of time, but also my perception of space.
The vast desert stretched out for as far as my eyes could see. So how can I replicate those sensations and create a new spell?
The School of Illusion focuses on creating false sensory impressions. To distort time, the spell would manipulate the perception of time rather than altering the actual time flow.
This manipulation might involve tricking the target's mind into thinking events are happening slower or faster than they are.
Potential material components required:
Dust of Heras Hourglass: This is symbolic of time and can be found in the Heras Plains in the east.
Fragment of Ketikus Stone: This is connected to cycles and illusions and can be found in the dwarven lands down south.
The spell component needs thorough research, and so does the physical component of the spell. Finally, a lot of testing is required for the spell.
Adam continued to write down in his grimoire, but gradually his brows creased together.
"Sigh, I sort of expected this but this is still a great surprise to me," he murmured.
The strength of the resulting spell was at least Rank 5!
Even if Adam tweaked it a little, he could bring it down to Rank 4 or Rank 3—if that was possible at all. But there was no way this would be a Rank 2 Spell.
Forget it, I'll continue working on this illusion spell and see what rank it eventually falls under, he thought to himself.
He looked out of the towering windows of the library and noticed that the sun was about to set beyond the horizon. He lowered his legs from the table and put away the grimoire in his earring.
Then, he proceeded to exit the Grand Library, making his way toward his manor in Ravenfell.
Alright, time to meet the new Agents from the Brotherhood.
