Chapter 629: Back and Forth
At once, the atmosphere in the chamber turned solemn.
Nylian was an elf who strictly followed traditions. Furthermore, he had studied in Saratoga Castle in his youth, and thus greatly respected this prestigious institution and its Headmaster.
For Ives Ballard to question the order of the Master of Ravenfell didn't sit well with Nylian. "It would be in your best interest not to question the Headmaster's authority going forward."
Ives glared at the elf. "Lord Feno, are you threatening me?"
Nylian's lips curled up into a cold smile. "No, Lord Ballard, I am simply telling you to remember your place."
"You—" Ives clenched his fists in rage and was about to retort, but was suddenly interrupted.
"That is enough, My Lords," said Hammond. "We will now proceed to the next agenda."
"Hmph!" Ives stared daggers at Nylian and harrumphed in anger. He did not wish to quarrel any further in front of the rest of the councilors.
Nylian, on the other hand, remained stoic. He closed his eyes and continued to listen to the meeting.
Seeing Nylian and Ives refraining from arguing any further, Hammon secretly heaved a sigh of relief. He then continued, "Next topic of agenda is the threat of Umbra Thieves."
He then looked at the old man sitting beside him and nodded. "Lord Flynn, please go ahead."
Brigham nodded and was about to begin when another councilor sitting beside Ives spoke up before him, "Are you still going on about that thieves' guild? As far as the latest reports state, their existence has been completely snuffed inside the city."
The man who had spoken was another elf - the patriarch of the Norwood Family, Taron Norwood. The Norwood Family was an old and extremely wealthy family. Their interests and investments within the city could be rivaled by a few other noble houses.
"What's more, I've heard that the Magi of your family have been constantly raiding the smaller bases of the Umbra Thieves around Ravenfell in the past year and a half," Taron added.
"At this point, I'm beginning to wonder if the Umbra Thieves really are a threat as much as you claim them to be," the elf concluded.
"They are indeed still a threat to the city's security," Brigham stated solemnly. "And we don't know for sure that their presence has truly been erased from within the city walls. We must remain vigilant!"
"Lord Flynn, I cannot help but think that you have a personal vendetta against the Umbra Thieves." A voice resounded from beside Ives.
The voice belonged to the only woman on the Council of Seven - Sabrina Benton, Lord Marshall of Ravenfell.
She was empowered with the full authority of the city's armed forces. Furthermore, she was also the matriarch of the Benton Family, a house famous for producing skilled Magi.
Although she was an old woman, she was one of the more powerful Magi sitting at this round table. She looked at Brigham and flatly stated, "Lord Flynn, we all know that you had been almost assassinated by one of the members of the Umbra Thieves.
"While admirable that you and your family are trying to get rid of their forces, I would suggest that you do not involve the other Magi of the city in your personal blood feud."
Brigham silently looked at the fierce woman sitting across from her. To him, Sabrina was the most difficult woman to deal with.
Yes, it was indeed true that he and the Umbra Thieves shared a blood feud. However, there was also the other reason why he was going after this thieves' guild. Alas, he couldn't talk about that reason since it involved the Twilight Brotherhood.
He thought of the right words to speak before finally stating, "Lady Benton, the Umbra Thieves are no petty criminals. They're a bunch of rats! Their corruption runs truly deep.
"Even if they're not operating within the city walls, can you be certain that the hidden smugglers and slavers in the city are not associated with them? Any illegal activity inside Ravenfell is highly likely to be connected to them!"
Sabrina remained silent for a few moments before asking, "So do you wish for the city to go to war with them? Even if we completely root out the Umbra Thieves, do you believe all illegal activities inside Ravenfell will cease?"
Hearing this conversation, Ives couldn't help but sneer, "To me, it just seems that Lord Flynn is trying to borrow our strength to get revenge for what happened to him."
"Lord Flynn," Taron Norwood called out to him. "Have you found the location of the Umbra Thieves' headquarters yet?"
Brigham shook his head with a sigh. "Not yet."
The agents from the Brotherhood suspected the Umbra Thieves of utilizing a powerful magic artifact that prevented others from divining their location. This was the reason why it was taking so much time.
However, Brigham was certain that for an organization as powerful as the Twilight Brotherhood it was only a matter of time before they were able to learn of the Umbra Thieves' location.
"Looks like you want us to shoot arrows in the dark then," Taron chuckled lightly.
"Let us continue this topic when you have something conclusive. What say you, Lord Flynn?" Hammon asked.
"I understand." Brigham nodded.
Inwardly, he thought to himself, If I'm unable to get the majority vote to deploy manpower against the Umbra Thieves…
He secretly glanced at Nylian Feno and Hammond McLeod and wondered, At the very least, I can convince these two. Then, including me, we will have three Mana Vortex Magi to go up against the leaders of the Umbra Thieves!
Hammond faintly smiled at his long-time friend, Brigham. Then, he looked at the other council members and continued, "Next order of business - the situation in Corvid Quarter."
Ives and Taron were the first to display their unwillingness to talk about the development of the Corvid Quarter. In fact, more than half of the council members did not want to have anything to do with this district. Read new chapters at My Virtual Library Empire
They considered it the cancerous part of Ravenfell and would rather cut it off than try to cure it. The debate regarding the pandemic as well as its subsequent aftermath in the Corvid Quarter continued for a long time as the council members went back and forth.
During the debate, Brigham raised a crucial point about the criminal enterprise that had quickly gained dominion over the back alleys of Corvid Quarter - the Red Fists.
While most council members dismissed the importance that Brigham placed on this organization, there was one person whose eyes rippled with faint emotions at the mention of the Red Fists.
It was the person who had remained silent for the entire duration of the meeting, the final member of the Council of Seven, Daniel Ranzenberg!
