Chapter 53: Chapter 53: The Cautious Sea King, Poseidon
"Poseidon's coming?"
Eros stopped what he was doing, his expression lighting up with excitement as he looked toward Acheron.
"Mm. She recently returned to her divine seat and received my invitation. She's on her way now," Acheron replied calmly.
The long-awaited show was finally about to begin.
With that, Eros figured his little building-blocks game had just about run its course.
"I had the others run the drills I gave you, right? They should be about ready?"
He asked casually, only nodding in satisfaction once Acheron confirmed that everything was in place.
"Good. Then I can't appear in person next. You've memorized the lines I gave you, haven't you?"
Since Eros couldn't take the stage himself, it was time for him to hide behind the scenes and enjoy the show.
To prepare for this, Hebe had even fetched a divine artifact capable of completely concealing one's presence and aura in Poseidon's vicinity.
With all preparations complete and the plan reviewed one last time, Eros slipped away to rendezvous with Hebe and the others.
Acheron wasn't Eros's puppet, she was a fully prepped actress, ready to perform this improv show on his behalf.
Out at sea, Poseidon was riding her golden chariot, drawn by majestic hippocamps, creatures with the heads of horses and the tails of fish, as they cut across the waves toward the Silver Whirlpool.
Their powerful tails slapped against the sea, stirring up fierce tides.
Poseidon, however, hadn't come with friendly intentions.
Among Oceanus's many children, Acheron was the eldest and most like him in temperament. Her invitation, to Poseidon, came laced with subtle hostility.
After all, they had no real prior relationship. So why now?
Was this dissatisfaction?
Or perhaps… a provocation?
"Your Majesty, we'll be arriving shortly," a nearby sea spirit whispered.
"I know," Poseidon replied, glancing sideways at them with faint regret.
Her foundation in the ocean was still too shallow. Most marine species had been created by Oceanus and his children.
Granted, creators didn't automatically inspire loyalty, but it still highlighted Poseidon's relative lack of influence.
That's why she constantly used her divine authority of Fertility to birth her own children and deepen ties with various aquatic races.
It definitely wasn't just because she enjoyed it.
She mentally sorted through Acheron's possible motives. After ruling out the most absurd theories, one stood out:
Acheron might be trying to unite her fellow river gods and pressure Poseidon together.
Most likely, they wanted to expand the river gods' autonomy and resist Poseidon's control over them.
The thought made Poseidon chuckle.
Hah. Without Oceanus around, even if all three thousand river deities united, she could handle them easily.
Foolish Acheron, just basking in the glory of her father's name.
During the Titanomachy, she wasn't even half as clever or useful as her sister Styx. And now she dared to challenge Poseidon?
Perfect. Poseidon could make an example of her to let the entire ocean know who truly ruled the seas now.
A surge of waves rolled in as she drove her chariot toward the Silver Whirlpool.
Towering waves, monstrous in scale, surged toward the river-mouth city-state, as if about to drag it into the depths of the sea.
High above, on the roof of the temple, Eros looked down at the oncoming tempest and muttered to himself.
"…That's weird. Didn't I tell Acheron to invite her for a party? Why does it look like she came here to fight?"
"You think everything's going to be okay?" Amphitrite asked, feeding a grape into Eros's mouth, her tone laced with concern.
"Should be fine. Poseidon doesn't strike me as the type to go berserk over nothing…"
Eros paused. At least, he hoped she wasn't the type to flood an entire city over a misunderstanding.
Probably?
"Acheron! Why haven't you come to greet me?!"
Poseidon's voice thundered across the city, loud enough to rattle stone, accompanied by the crashing roar of waves slamming against the cliffs.
The message was clear: if Acheron didn't come out soon, this entire place might get washed into the sea.
Normally, Acheron wouldn't have tolerated such provocation. She'd have come out swinging just to save face.
Not that the result would've changed much.
But today-
"I've been right here waiting to greet you. Why are you pretending not to see me?"
Acheron sounded genuinely innocent. After all, she had been waiting at the shoreline the whole time, just like the plan said.
You didn't even glance my way, and now you're scolding me for not welcoming you? What's wrong with you?
Poseidon, ready to deliver another biting remark, choked on her words.
Only now did she actually notice the tall figure standing quietly on the coast.
She's actually here to greet me? That's… weird.
The crashing wave behind her crumbled and dispersed against the rocky shore.
Her golden chariot surged forward and came to a halt right in front of Acheron.
Poseidon narrowed her eyes, studying the other goddess.
Rumor had it Acheron was as much a perverse mess as she was, but the woman before her seemed dignified, reserved, even normal.
Something didn't add up.
Was the intel wrong?
Was this whole "perverted silverworm" thing just a mask she wore to hide her true self?
Poseidon had arrived full of confidence. But ever since she laid eyes on Acheron, unease began to creep into her heart.
A wildcat with fangs was one thing.
But a snake in hiding?
That was far more dangerous.
If she could hide her personality this well, who's to say she didn't have hidden strength too?
"Hahaha, come on now, don't be silly! I was just joking earlier," Poseidon said with a radiant smile as she gracefully leapt from her chariot.
"With your size, how could I possibly have missed you?"
Acheron had inherited her father's massive physique and, with her wings spread, was indeed hard to miss.
Acheron didn't know why Poseidon had suddenly changed her tune, but…
That should mean the first step was a success, right?
She recalled the first part of Eros's plan.
Start by building a friendly rapport with Poseidon.
Now, not only was Poseidon smiling brightly, she was even about to throw an arm around Acheron, if not for their size difference.
Step one: completed.
Acheron smiled too, playing her role.
"Please, Sea King, this way. I've prepared a banquet that's sure to satisfy you."
