Ding Yao did not say anything and only sighed. Ever since she was young she was suppressed by her parents.

'You are the eldest so you will have to care for your parents more.'

'You are the eldest daughter, so of course you will have to work hard.'

'As the eldest, you need to give into your sister.'

Ding Yao under the constant brainwashing of her parents could only become more and more filial while Ding Xuelan was like the little lord of the house, she could do anything that she wanted.

And Ding Yao knew that it was all because Ding Xuelan was a sweet talker, she knew how to flatter their parents and those two old people were foolish enough to listen to her.

Unlike Ding Xuelan, Ding Yao did not know how to please her parents and could only work. Thus, it was not a surprise that her parents, who were biased from the start, only cared for Ding Xuelan and not her.

Xu Shuhua who was on the side saw his wife sigh and got even more angry. "What is the point of sighing all day? The useless bums eat day and night. They have meat, eggs and polished rice but what do we have?"

"We only get rice porridge and that too only a few rice grains in it." The more he spoke the more his voice turned loud. He then said, "If I did not know better I would have thought that we are the useless bums and the rest of the family is raising us!"

His complaints and curses were heard by Old Daddy Ding and Ding Xuelan but they did not say anything. The last time they tried to raise their hand at Xu Shuhua and for the first time they saw Ding Yao angry, if not for the fact that Old Daddy Ding made a fuss and suppressed Ding Yao, she would have left the house with her husbands.

The sight was still fresh in their mind and could only suppress themselves. But Ding Xuelan was upset, she was the youngest and the apple of the eye of her parents, what was wrong with her not working? Why should she be scolded?

She immediately acted spoiled with her daddy and said, "Daddy, I was the one who gave birth to the heir of this family with my husband, and my sister only gave birth to six money-losing things, why is she acting like this?"

Old Master Ding was also upset with the scolding of his son-in-law but he dared not to say anything. They were new to this village and were relying on Ding Yao, they couldn't offend her!

He could only lower his head and say to his daughter, "It's alright, let them scold you. In the end, they will still have to eat rice porridge and you will eat eggs. Unless you lose a bit of meat, there is no need to fight with those useless things."

Even though Old Master Ding did not earn, he kept the key of the kitchen in his hands and when his sons-in-law were cooking, he would watch them like a hawk. Only he, his wife and the family of Ding Xuelan were allowed to eat eggs and meat, not a piece was left for Ding Yao and her family.

Once the mer were done cooking, he would snatch the pot and pans and then lock the cabinet that had eggs and meat stored. Even the rice grains were locked away.

"Daddy you are so good to me!" Ding Xuelan smiled happily as she played in the lap of her father.

Seeing this the five or six-year-old Ding Nuannuan paused in her actions and turned to look at her mother who was acting like a spoiled child. She curled her lips in disdain and then walked out of the house.

She really did not like this cheap mother that she got, even though Ding Nuannuan was only six years old, she was much more mature than the rest. This was because when she was living in the small village, she met with a master who helped her gain insight and gave her a puppet.

This puppet was a lucky charm for Ding Nuannuan, it could actually make others favour Ding Nuannuan without any restraint. Because of this, she was favoured in the home and even her mother could share some limelight with her.

However, Ding Nuannuan was not contented, she thought that she was really lucky and could get a better life.

As she was lost in thoughts, her eyes fell on the large house that was not far from their house. Ding Nuannuan's eyes lit up, she rushed to hide behind a tree and saw a woman walk out of the house.

She was holding a mer in her arms and smiling at him, in her hand was a bowl with strawberry puree inside of it.

Ding Nuannuan watched the woman play with the mer who was smiling and giggling in her arms. Soon another mer rushed out of the house and said, "Sister, me too! Take me to the strawberry farm too, I want to eat the strawberries!"

"Isn't there a bowl of strawberries at home?" The woman said to the mer, however, the mer did not let go of her pants, instead he clung even harder and then started to climb up the woman's body. "No, I want to go with my sister! You pluck the sweetest ones, Mai wants to eat the sweetest strawberries!"

Ding Nuannuan thought that the woman would throw the mer off her shoulders, after all, this was something that she had seen her grandmother and mother do a lot of time but to her surprise, the woman did not throw the mer off!

Seeing the woman dote on the mers as if they were her little treasure, Ding Nuannuan was so angry and envious that her eyes turned green with envy.

Why was this woman so good to the mers? If only…if only she was her mother then ——
