Chapter 79: Chapter 80: Gratitude for This Lady’s Contribution
The surrounding reporters looked at the middle-aged woman as if she were a fool, wondering if she truly had no idea whose press conference this was.
Even if they shared the same doubts as her, they would never voice them out loud. How much was she being paid to say this?
The middle-aged woman wore an expression of absolute confidence. Of course, she knew. The Demon King, the mastermind behind the demon invasion.
She had done thorough research. The Demon King had only appeared in public once, and during that demon invasion, there had been no casualties—just a lot of noise but little impact.
Besides, with so many people present, it was impossible to eliminate all the reporters. If he did, he would never be able to operate in the human world again.
Banner attempted to explain, "Regarding this matter, we can conduct tests on the experimental subjects to prove—"
The middle-aged woman immediately caught onto his wording and interrupted, "So, you're saying that right now, you have no way to prove that this person is not a mutant?"
"Uh..." Banner was momentarily speechless.
"Dr. Banner, I would like to ask: Have these drugs undergone human trials?" The woman pressed on.
"Yes, but they were all—" Banner tried to clarify.
Tony immediately realized the situation was spiraling out of control. If Banner admitted to it, regardless of the reason, public opinion would turn against them.
"Furthermore, Dr. Banner, I have doubts about whether you are truly the creator of these drugs," the middle-aged woman continued her attack.
"The healing potion was invented by someone else, but the limb regeneration drug was indeed my creation."
As soon as these words left his mouth, all the cameras turned toward Banner. The reporters below frantically took notes.
"Wait, what I meant was—"
Banner grew anxious. He hadn't anticipated this scenario, and beads of sweat appeared on his forehead. His face flushed, and his hands unconsciously clenched and unclenched.
"Banner, let me take it from here."
Kino stepped onto the stage.
"I'm sorry, Young Master, I've ruined the press conference," Banner said dejectedly, lowering his head in guilt.
"Not at all. This is just a minor unexpected situation," Kino reassured him, patting his shoulder with an encouraging look. "Don't worry about it. I'll handle it."
Kino turned to face the audience, his gaze calm yet sharp.
That look sent a chill down the middle-aged woman's spine, but she forced herself to remain composed and said loudly, "What? Did I hit a nerve? Are you going to kill me now?"
The people around her subtly distanced themselves.
Kino shook his head calmly. "Not at all. I'm just here to answer your questions."
The middle-aged woman smirked triumphantly. She had guessed correctly—he wouldn't dare to kill her.
"For your first question, you just claimed that the experimental subjects are mutants. So, let me ask you: Are you a mutant?" Kino questioned.
The woman was momentarily stunned but quickly responded, "Of course not. I even have an official certificate from the government proving it."
Tony shook his head and muttered, "This woman is in trouble."
In the next second, Kino smiled.
"Then I'd like to trouble you to serve as our test subject."
Before she could react, the middle-aged woman was suddenly brought onto the stage. The experimental subject holding the dagger didn't hesitate—he slashed her limbs and abdomen a few times.
"Aaaahhh!!"
The woman's bloodcurdling screams echoed through the room. Her face twisted in unbearable agony, and her eyes filled with terror and despair.
The audience was thrown into an uproar. Some gasped and covered their mouths in horror, while others turned away, unable to watch.
Pepper pushed Tony's arm aside.
"Tony, it's okay. I need to get used to things like this sooner or later."
Pepper's face was pale, but her gaze was unwavering.
"Pepper..."
Kino injected the remaining healing potion into the middle-aged woman's body.
As time passed, her wounds gradually healed. She trembled as she stood up, her eyes filled with terror. Her entire body was shaking uncontrollably, as if she had been utterly broken by fear.
She finally understood—Kino's title as the Demon King was not just for show. At this moment, she regretted everything. She should never have recklessly provoked him.
Kino smiled kindly. "Thank you for your contribution to the experiment, ma'am. You'll receive a small gift when you leave. Now, please return to your seat."
"Y-yes…"
The middle-aged woman's voice trembled as she spoke. She dared not show any defiance. Her legs were still weak as she staggered back to her seat.
Her body emitted a foul stench—a mixture of urine, blood, and sweat.
The people around her quickly moved away. Some looked at her with pity and sighed, while others sneered and whispered among themselves.
"Serves her right. She brought this upon herself."
"Who told her to provoke the Demon King?"
"She almost got her moment of fame… but at what cost?"
The woman hung her head in shame, wishing she could disappear. Regret and fear consumed her entirely.
Once the stage was cleaned up, Kino ignored the murmurs from the audience and continued, "Now, for the second question. Yes, we conducted human trials. Now, let the test subjects come forward."
As soon as he spoke, a group of individuals with deformed and missing limbs emerged from backstage. Some had twisted bodies, some had disfigured faces, and their scars were horrifying to witness.
The audience fell into a stunned silence. No one could find the words to speak.
Kino addressed them:
"These people are heroes of this country. They risked their lives for this nation.
They encountered unimaginable dangers, lost their healthy bodies, and endured immense suffering. Yet, they never complained. They never gave up.
The medicine we developed gives them hope of regaining a normal life."
Kino paused before continuing, "They volunteered for these trials, not just for themselves but so that others like them might never have to endure the same fate.
This is why we conducted human trials."
The test subjects spoke up:
"That's right! We volunteered. Without this medicine, we would have ended our lives already." One man, who had lost his lower body, declared.
"My wounds hurt every single day. I rely on painkillers just to function. I'm only 25 years old." Another, whose face was covered in burn scars, choked up.
"This drug is our only hope."
"My condition isn't as severe as theirs. I just want to see my child again." A blind middle-aged man added.
The reporters in the audience were moved to tears. Despite their blurred vision, their hands remained steady as they captured every moment.
Their hearts were deeply touched, and their pens flew across their notepads, eager to share this story with the world.
Even Tony, usually carefree, wore an expression of solemn respect.
Pepper, overwhelmed with emotion, wept.
"Those who dare to challenge fate will either become legends or cautionary tales."
