Chapter 10: Chapter 10: The Boy Who Shopped
Morning sunlight spilled through the high windows of Moriarty Castle, casting warm beams across the ancient stone corridors and bathing the great hall in gold. The air smelled faintly of honeyed bread and spellfire, and somewhere deep in the kitchens, a house-elf yelped after burning its finger on a floating skillet.
Harry Potter adjusted the collar of his traveling cloak in front of a full-length mirror shaped like a lion. He wasn't nervous—not really. Maybe excited. Okay, maybe nervous and excited. Today, he would shop for his school supplies. Today, he'd walk Diagon Alley. Today, he'd buy a wand.
A heavy knock echoed through the stone halls.
The massive doors swung open of their own accord.
"Hagrid!" Harry beamed.
The half-giant grinned back, ducking beneath the archway as he stepped inside with his usual warm presence and hay-scented coat.
"Ready to go, 'Arry?" he asked, giving the boy a pat on the shoulder that nearly knocked him over.
"I've been ready since sunrise," Harry said, practically vibrating.
Evelyn entered just in time, carrying a satchel of enchanted coins. "Here, darling. A thousand Galleons. You don't have to spend it all, but I want you to buy anything you need. And anything that catches your eye."
Harry's jaw dropped. "A thousand?"
"Think of it as your Hogwarts fund," Evelyn said, tucking the pouch into his bag. "Books, robes, sweets, maybe a pet or two."
Maximus strolled in behind her with a smirk. "You know, champ, bankrupting a store or two while shopping is standard Moriarty procedure."
Harry laughed, then turned to Hagrid. "We're using the Floo, right?"
"Aye, fireplace it is."
Moments later, the trio stood in the castle's grand hearth, Harry clinging to a pinch of green powder.
"Say it clearly: 'Diagon Alley,'" Evelyn instructed.
"I will! Love you!"
Green fire consumed him in a flash — and then, with a whoosh — they were off.
—
The soot cleared, and Harry found himself inside a shadowy tavern filled with odd smells and odder patrons. They barely had time to blink before Hagrid emerged beside him, brushing ash from his coat.
They stepped out into the bright cobbled street, bustling with witches, wizards, floating signs, and flocks of owls perched atop brass lampposts.
"I ave some werk in Gringotts Arry we will go theree first and then buye yer supplyees" Hagrid said in so fast a speech Harry barely understood a thing.
"There it is, 'Arry," Hagrid said, pointing toward a looming marble building at the far end of the alley. "Gringotts—the wizard bank. Ain't no safer place, not one, 'cept perhaps Hogwarts… and maybe Moriarty Castle."
The grandeur of Gringotts stunned Harry. White stone, bronze doors, and dragons etched in relief. He took a step closer.
They entered into a vast lobby lined with long counters, each manned by a small, severe-looking goblin. Scales, scrolls, gold, and gems cluttered every surface as goblins argued and scribbled with razor quills.
"Those are goblins, 'Arry," Hagrid whispered as they walked. "Clever as they come, but not the friendliest of beasts."
Harry blinked. "But… Aunt Eve said that humans—Muggles, witches, goblins, giants, house-elves, veela, werewolves, centaurs, and merpeople—are intelligent creatures. All are Equals."
Hagrid paused. His smile softened. "Your aunt is a benevolent and great woman, 'Arry. Not everyone's as kind as your uncle and aunt—or Dumbledore, for that matter."
Harry beamed. He liked it when people praised his family. "By the way, Hagrid… Who is Albus Dumbledore? He seemed like a nice grandpa yesterday."
Hagrid chuckled. "Dumbledore's the finest Headmaster Hogwarts has seen. A great man. Powerful wizard."
"So… who's stronger? My uncle or Dumbledore?"
The question caught Hagrid off guard. He coughed, looked around, and quickly said, "Er—look, we're here."
They approached a goblin clerk.
Hagrid pulled out a folded letter. "Professor Dumbledore gave me this."
The envelope read:
To the Head Goblin in charge of all Goblins,Gringotts Bank,Diagon Alley.
"It's about—you-know-what in vault you-know-which," Hagrid muttered.
The goblin gave a curt nod. "Very well."
Moments later, they were escorted to a rickety mine cart, which sped off along the twisting underground tracks. The wind rushed past, and Harry clutched the sides.
They came to a halt in front of an ancient vault door. Goblin magic unlocked it, revealing nothing but shadows. Hagrid stepped inside briefly and returned with something hidden in his coat.
"What was in there?" Harry asked, curious.
"Can't tell you, 'Arry. Hogwarts business. Very secret," Hagrid said, tapping his nose. "Best not to mention it to anyone."
Harry nodded solemnly.
—
Back above ground, they hit the shops one by one. Flourish and Blotts for books—Harry made sure to pick up Fantastic Beasts and Magical Drafts with extra enthusiasm. They stopped at Madam Malkin's for robes, where the assistant looked visibly relieved Evelyn wasn't present for the fitting. Harry even bought mango and cherry ice cream from Florean Fortescue's, just for his uncle and aunt.
They stocked up on potion ingredients from Mr. Mulpepper's Apothecary, and Harry found himself sneezing for a full five minutes after sniffing crushed billywig stings.
"I still need a wand," he finally said.
"A wand? Then you want Ollivanders," Hagrid replied, pointing toward a crooked, dust-covered shop with a single window. "Ain't no place better. Run along — I've got one last thing to do."
—
Harry stepped inside.
"Hello?" he called. "Hellooo?"
Dust motes danced in the sunlight, and shelves of narrow boxes towered around him like paper cathedrals.
"I wondered when I'd be seeing you, Mister Potter."
The voice came from above and startled Harry.
An elderly man descended a ladder, pale-eyed and soft-spoken, his presence unnerving and gentle all at once.
It was Garrick Ollivander.
"It seems only yesterday that your mother and father were in here buying their first wands," Ollivander mused while taking a wand out of a box. "Here we are."
He handed Harry a wand. Harry just stared at him.
"Give it a wave," the old man said.
Harry gave it a hesitant wave.
A stack of boxes leapt into the air and crashed down.
"Apparently not," Ollivander said. "Hmm… perhaps this?" He took another wand.
The second wand cracked a glass jar.
"No, no, definitely not. No matter."
Ollivander's eyes narrowed with thought. "I wonder…"
He retrieved a slender, dark wand.
As Harry touched it, a breeze whispered through the room, and warm light surged around him. The wand pulsed with recognition.
"Curious… very curious," Ollivander murmured.
Harry blinked. "S-sorry, but what's curious?"
"I remember every wand I ever sold, Mister Potter. It so happens that the phoenix whose feather resides in your wand… gave just one other." He replied, "It's curious that you should be destined for this wand when its brother gave you that scar," he pointed at Harry's scar.
Harry frowned. "And who owned that wand?"
Ollivander's voice fell. "Oh… we do not speak his name. The wand chooses the wizard, Mister Potter. It's not always clear why. But I think it is clear that we must expect great things from you. After all, He - Who - Must - Not - Be - Named did great things. Terrible, yes… but great."
Harry shivered.
The door swung open again, and Hagrid returned, holding a cage with a snowy white owl inside.
"For yeh," Hagrid said, setting it down. "Happy birthday, 'Arry."
Harry was speechless. He reached into the cage, and the owl nudged his hand, hooting softly.
"I… I've never had a pet before."
"Well, now yeh do."
—
They found a table at the Leaky Cauldron for lunch. Butterbeer for Hagrid, pumpkin juice for Harry, and a towering shepherd's pie between them.
But Harry's eyes weren't on the food.
"You alright, 'Arry? Seem very quiet."
Harry poked at his pie. "He killed my parents, didn't he? The one who gave me this scar?" He touched his forehead. "I asked my uncle once. He said he'd tell me later. But you know, Hagrid. I know you do."
Hagrid sighed, leaned back. "First and understand, 'Arry — because it's very important. Not all wizards are good. Some go bad. A few years ago… there was one who went as bad as you can go. His name was… V… Vo… Vvv…"
"Maybe write it down?" Harry offered.
"I can't spell it..... Alright. Voldemort."
Harry said it aloud. "Voldemort?"
"Quiet!" Hagrid hissed, eyes wide. "It was dark times, 'Arry. Voldemort started gatherin' followers. Dark ones. Anyone who stood up to him ended up dead. Your parents fought him. But nobody lived once he decided to kill 'em. Nobody… except you."
Harry stared. "Me? Voldemort tried to kill me?"
"That's no ordinary cut on your forehead. A mark like that only comes from being touched by a curse. An evil curse."
"What happened to Vvv — You - Know - Who?"
"Well… some say he died. Codswallop, I say. I reckon he's still out there. Too weak to carry on. But something about you stumped him that night, 'Arry. That's why you're famous. That's why everybody knows your name. You're the Boy Who Lived."
Harry looked down. "But… if he's still alive, won't he come after me? After my uncle and aunt?"
Hagrid let out a laugh so loud it startled nearby patrons. "Don't you worry, 'Arry. If he ever came near yeh, your uncle and aunt would destroy him. He feared only three people in the whole world: Dumbledore… and the Moriarty couple. If only your uncle and aunt were here when he emerged."
Harry blinked. "Really?"
"Your uncle and aunt, 'Arry, are far more legendary than you think."
—
Later that evening, they returned via Floo to Moriarty Castle. As the green flames died down, Maximus and Evelyn were waiting.
"Welcome back, champ," Maximus said, pulling Harry into a hug.
"Did you get a wand?" Evelyn asked, kissing his hair. "Tell us everything."
Harry beamed. "You're not going to believe half of it."
And for the first time in his life, Harry Potter felt like he truly belonged.
