Chapter 1: A day full of new things... maybe?
The man grimaced. "Fine. I guess I can do that. It's not like I have more important things to do. Can you wake him up?"
"He should be able to do it himself by now," Porlyusca stood up. "Just wait a little longer," she said as she walked towards the exit of that room. "I'll be in my living room if you need anything. Don't do anything strange, Makarov."
"Who do you think I am, woman?"
"An infuriating, troublesome, perverted old man."
"Hey, hey..." Makarov dropped his head, a little depressed. Sighing a little at his old friend's behavior, he decided to walk a few steps before placing his hands on the chair and pushing himself up to sit down. His feet dangled slightly off the edge, and his butt didn't reach the end of it. His old eyes stared at the sleeping young man. His skin was white, but healthy. His black hair was rather messy, and there was a scar on his forehead that was still red, as if it had been made not too long ago.
For him, this was nothing new. He was used to dealing with young people who had lost something in life, or who didn't have much to begin with. In fact, he was surrounded by them, constantly. The way he was raised, his principles, as well as his own personality, meant that he couldn't help but help children who needed a hand, even those who could be considered criminals.
"Oh?", after a few minutes, swinging his feet while thinking, he realized that the young man was making a bit of noise. His closed eyelids moved erratically, until they slowly opened. "You've woken up. How do you feel?", Makarov's voice, surprised the boy a little, who tried to move, but ended up grimacing in pain. His head moved, looking at the place he was in, but above all, at his body covered with a sheet on the bed.
"If anything hurts, don't hesitate to say so. We have a rather competent healer around here."
"Who...?" a hoarse voice came from the young man's mouth. "Who... are you?" he asked, completely confused of his situation. "Where am I?"
"I am Makarov Dreyar, Guild Master of Fairy Tail. Tell me, boy, what is your name? It seems you have been through something quite strenuous. You fell directly on Porlyusca's head. Oh, by the way, she is the one who healed your wounds."
"Guild... Fairy Tail?" the young man frowned and stared at the ceiling, trying to recognize that name. However, when he recognized Makarov's question, he became more bewildered. He tried to find a clear answer, but it was a bit difficult. It seemed to be on the tip of his tongue, but it was impossible to pronounce. At least, completely. "Harry..." he muttered before looking at Makarov. "My name is Harry."
The old man nodded. "Harry… Good. It seems to have been difficult for you. Do you remember anything else?"
"I… not much…" he said, groaning a little as he took a seat. "I think I had people around me? I remember a rather large light, but after that…" a headache hit him, causing him to squeeze the right side of his head. "I'm sorry…"
"You don't have to," Makarov jumped a little to stand on the ground, looking up. "If you have amnesia, it's just a matter of time before you can regain all those memories. Besides, Porlyusca could help you better with that. For now, since you don't seem to have anyone or anything, why don't you come with me? That way, you won't have to worry about where to live."
"I... I don't know..." Harry looked at him in embarrassment. He didn't know what to do. But his mind told him that he didn't want to be a bother. "Can I really? Wouldn't it be troublesome for you?"
"Not at all," Makarov chuckled softly. "Trust me, lad, you're one of the calmest I've ever met. But, before that, let me ask you a few questions. After all, it's important to know what you remember, and what you don't."
"Do you know how to do basic things? I mean, like going to the bathroom."
"Yes..."
"Does the Kingdom of Fiore ring a bell?"
"Um... no..."
"And magic?"
"Magic?" Harry blinked before lowering his head slightly. Makarov didn't rush him, he simply waited patiently. "Yes, I think. Did he have a wand? I think I also remember a man, a very tall and broad one, saying he was a wizard. But..." he stopped as he hissed in pain. His head was constantly throbbing, as if his heart was inside his skull.
"It's okay, you don't have to try too hard, not if it causes you pain. We'll go, little by little, in the future. Now, the most important thing, is that you can rest to fully recover. I'll call Porlyusca to examine you some more."
. . . .
Part 2.
"And don't come back!"
Looking at the bag that had been thrown at him, Harry felt bewildered, even more so than he already was due to his situation. He had been thrown out of the house he was in. He had been thrown out with Makarov, who had actually been lifted by the collar of his coat and thrown outside like some sort of doll.
"Is this okay? I thought he would examine me."
"If she's taken us out of her house, that means she's already done it," Makarov gently patted the dust off his clothes. Then, he looked up. "Why don't you check what you have there?"
Looking at the bag, he opened the top. Inside, it contained several types of bottles with liquid and also others with pills. But the only thing he took out, was a note that had all the instructions to take what, clearly, is medicine. "Oh..." he murmured with a small smile. "She seems nice, even if she doesn't want to show it."
"Right! That's Porlyusca," Makarov smiled as he walked forward. "Come on. Don't go too far. While this part of the forest isn't dangerous, you still don't know the way."
Harry walked a couple of steps behind Makarov, clutching the bag in his arms. Every step he took, he seemed overly cautious, as if he was waiting for dangers to suddenly appear from the shadows of the trees or from between the bushes. Still, his eyes seemed to show a certain glint of curiosity.
"Do you like the forest?"
"It's rather... pretty," Harry smiled, but then showed some sadness and bewilderment intermingling in his expression. "Though... I don't know if I've been here before. Maybe I've been in a similar forest? It feels... nostalgic?"
Makarov could tell that Harry didn't like his situation. From the fact that he looked ready to fight, to his expressions. But it was completely understandable. Who liked to live full of unknowns? The boy didn't even seem to remember his full name. As they walked, they had to jump over the rocks of a stream, climb a bit of uneven ground, and then circle around a bit, until they reached the gates of a nice town.
The stone paths were clean, with buildings: houses, businesses, and so on, also made of stone, most of them. The roofs were colorful, which generated a certain individuality between each place. What caught Harry's attention were the water paths that divided the street they passed through, joined by bridges that weren't very large, perhaps about four or five meters long.
"This is Magnolia," Makarov informed him with a small smile. "In the center, there's the Kardia Cathedral. It's quite a notable point, so if you get lost in the future, you can have it as a reference. In the north, that's where we need to go. To the guild building, near the shores of Lake Sciliora."
Harry nodded slightly. "It looks nice," he muttered loud enough for Makarov to hear. But in his heart, he felt a bit uneasy. He didn't know why; he couldn't understand it. Despite how beautiful the city was and that sense of peace it generated, something told him that this was impossible for him to maintain. That, in turn, made him feel sad and angry at the same time.
Moving north, Harry realized that Makarov was quite well-known. Many greeted him cordially, both young and old people, even old people who looked older than him. They all seemed to have a certain level of respect for him.
After several minutes of walking and getting to know the city a little, they arrived near the shores of the lake. The guild building wasn't too big, but it couldn't be described as small either. It seemed to have a total of three floors, but each one smaller than the last. The doors were rather large, red in color, with a large sign on top that read: FAIRY TAIL.
"Are you good at dodging?" Makarov looked at him with something akin to embarrassment. "Uh... nevermind, I don't think you remember anything like that. Anyway, don't let the brats catch you with their stuff." Harry didn't understand that, until he opened the doors, where an impressive amount of noise flooded his ears. Screams of amusement, but also some insults mixed in. Music and footsteps everywhere. Everyone ignored him as they came to a bar, which was being tended by a pretty silver-haired girl.
"Hey, Mira, can you give me the mark?"
"Master..." Mira smiled at him, putting aside the beer mug she was cleaning. "I thought he went with Lady Porlyusca, but he came back with a new member."
"Don't worry too much. The boy doesn't remember many things," Makarov looked at her with a bit of seriousness. "I'll put our mark on him, and then I'll take him to my office to explain some things to him. By the way, do you know if Erza has returned?"
"She hasn't. Neither has Natsu. She ran off when Krov told her something about Igneel, although I think it's totally false."
Makarov nodded at that, taking what looked like a seal of some sort into his right hand. "Come here, Harry. Since you're now going to be a member of Fairy Tail, you need to have the mark somewhere. Where do you prefer it?"
"Mark?"
"It's like a tattoo. Ah... a drawing on your skin."
Harry nodded before thinking for a bit. In the end, he simply shrugged as he rolled up the sleeve on his right arm a bit, showing the front of his wrist. Makarov planted the seal, which released a faint glow, only for him to realize something. "What color?"
"Ah?"
"What color would you like the guild mark to be?"
"Red," was his reply, which came almost instinctively. The white glow coming from the edges of the seal changed to red. A second later, when Makarov lifted it, Harry touched the mark in curiosity. There wasn't a single raised mark. It really was as if it had been painted on his skin.
"Well, welcome to Fairy Tail, boy."
"Thank you? I still don't quite understand, but yes, thank you for helping me, Mister Makarov."
"You can call me Master, if you want. Or also, Grandpa. Many do around here."
"I understand," Harry smiled a little before he moved on, following the old man who nodded for him to do so. Mira, who stood in her position, a little curious, watched them go before she shrugged.
"Should I tell the others?" she wondered. "I think a party would be great."
The two of them went up to the third floor, where there were only about three rooms, from what they could tell by the number of doors.
"There are a lot of things I have to show you," Makarov commented as he took a seat behind his desk. His office wasn't too big. It wasn't fancy. Just a room with a desk, a couple of shelves full of books, and papers on top of his table. It was right in front of a couple of windows that looked outside, into a small courtyard. You could see the lake from there, which was pretty cool. "Ah, yes, but before that. Don't go to the second floor."
"Even though I passed by there?"
"Special occasion," Makarov smiled. "I guess it's better to explain. A guild, more specifically, a magic guild, is a place where mages gather to do jobs. Each job has its own rank, depending on the difficulty. The second floor has the most dangerous jobs, and only mages of Rank S or higher can go up."
"So… if I do a job, do I get paid?"
"Yes. Exactly. Each job has its own remuneration. In most cases, all of that money will go to you. In others, a small portion will go to the guild. But those jobs are a bit more special, don't worry. For now, I'd like you to learn a bit more. Or remember."
"Because in order to do wizard jobs, you also need to understand the laws better, as well as the importance of the Magic Council," Makarov sighed a little as he thought he would need to explain a lot of things. "By the way, I have this," he said, taking out the wand he had kept in his coat. "Porlyusca found it on your body. It's a magic wand, so you should already know some magic. The problem is..."
"I don't remember," Harry grimaced. Reaching out, he took the wand, examining the cracks. "Does it look like it doesn't work? It looks broken."
"True. You could learn magic, again. There are plenty of books in the library. You can come in whenever you want."
"I think I will," he said with a smile, but then paused. "Uh... I don't know if I could read though."
"We can check it out immediately," the old man took one of the documents on his desk and handed it to Harry. "Do you understand any of that?"
Seeing the letters, Harry pursed his lips. "No not at all".
"Well... At least, that's good to know," Makarov nodded seriously. "I think I have an idea. I know someone who's pretty good at teaching, but above all, great with books. Doesn't it bother you to have someone your age teaching you?"
"Not at all, I have a friend who... Oh..."
"Good! It seems you're already starting to remember things," Makarov jumped a little in his seat, happy to see such rapid progress. "As expected of Porlyusca. It seems she's already started to treat that problem. You should follow her instructions on the medicine to the letter. Surely, before long, you'll be able to return to normal."
"I hope so," Harry smiled, feeling something warm as he remembered that he had a friend. She didn't have a name or a face, but that brought some happiness to him.
. . . .
Part 3.
Levy McGarden, a short, slender teenager with strange blue hair, smiled as she watched her student looking around. She was wearing glasses that allowed her to read much faster, thus speeding up her learning. "You seem to like them," she commented with a small laugh.
"Yeah. I think I wore some before too. Glasses, I mean. Maybe Mrs. Porlyusca fixed my eyes? Now that I have these on, it feels like a small weight has come back to me, if that makes any sense."
"Oh, it does. A lot, actually. Sometimes when I spend too much time reading and take them off, I feel like I need them back. In fact, I have a friend who sometimes forgets she has her glasses on."
Harry nodded before looking at the many books on one of the library tables. "I hope it's not a bother to you."
"Don't worry!" Levy gently slammed her fist into her chest. "I like books. Plus, the teacher told me I could consider it a job, so I'll get paid at the end."
"By the way, how fast can I read with these?"
Levy smiled as she placed a hand on her waist. "They have an 18x lacrima, so eighteen times faster. Great, right?"
"Definitely!" Harry felt surprised. He was now much more confident in learning the language. "How should I start?"
"With this one," taking a seat, Levy picked up a book. It was thin, with a rather lively and colorful cover. "Sometimes, children's books are very useful. It contains a complete alphabet, as well as examples where each letter is used. I've prepared a few questions for each book, so read it first. If you have any doubts, don't shy away from asking a question, okay?"
"I understand. Once again, thank you for this. You're a lifesaver."
She felt happy hearing that. And as Harry began to read 18 times faster, she thought for a bit. From what she could see, the new member of the guild seemed to be someone nice. Taking into account his appearance, she considered him to be someone handsome. But she didn't feel like someone arrogant or proud about it. In fact, he looked a little adorable with that serious expression on his face, as he read. Maybe it's because he didn't remember things?, she thought. He felt, a bit, like a real child, like one who was just on his first day of school.
Levy didn't know where he came from or what happened, but she didn't care too much either. From experience, she knew that many of the members in the guild had quite troubled pasts. Some, even dangerous. But they were here, within society, doing good things, or at least, trying. Whether it was because of admiration from older members or because of Makarov's push, they all wanted to try to be their best versions of themselves.
That's why, right now, Levy didn't feel worried. As long as this boy wants to try and move on, even if he never remembered his past, he knew he would have plenty of support around him. People who wouldn't let him go down the wrong path. Possible friends who would watch his back or beat him to reason. That's Fairy Tail. It has been for years.
"I think I get it."
"Yes?"
"Um," Harry looked at her and nodded. "Maybe the letters were the same, but used in a different order? Or maybe, similar."
"Are you talking about what you knew before your amnesia? It's possible. Many of today's languages bear similarities. In fact, even ancient ones bear similarities to one another. But be careful, perhaps writing it is one thing, but pronouncing it is another. I don't think so, though, in this case," Levy blinked and her mouth hung a little open. "Wait, if you speak a different language, how come I can understand you? Uh, I can speak several languages, but right now..."
"Ah... that's right, why?" Harry remained equally confused.
"You really can't read?"
Harry frowned. "Master Makarov showed me one of his papers. I couldn't understand it. But this book...", increasingly confused, Harry looked at the children's book. "Do you think it has to do with magic? Or my memories? I mean, I was clearly able to read it, even though I couldn't with the document before."
"Maybe that document awakened a part of your memories. Language is a pretty normal thing for people. Something that is used every day, and it will only become a problem when you are in another country with a different way of speaking. It's possible that you were able to unconsciously regain your ability to read, without even realizing it," Levy rubbed her forehead. "Apologies, I gave you a book without taking these things into account."
"Oh, come on, don't say that. It's enough that you want to help me."
"True. But it's still a mistake," Levy shook her head. "Anyway, let's move on a bit further. Let's try spelling some words first. Animals, for example, which already appear in that book. First, eagle."
"Yes," Harry nodded as he began his little test.
