Chapter 407: Chapter 407: The Calamity of Deities
A month later.
Isle of Man, Irish Sea.
In a small village along the coast, David Watson, Morris Kent, and Elena Joyce, dressed in black suits, showed their credentials to the priest in front of them, "CBI, Special Investigation Bureau. We received a report that people have disappeared from the village?"
"Ah, yes, Benson and Darcy, they disappeared a few days ago, but they have now returned," the priest said.
"Returned?" David looked skeptical.
"Yes, yes, they just swam too far and were washed up on the southern beach by the waves. It took them two days to return and they weren't really missing."
"But the report we received mentioned a human foot with a shoe was found on the beach. They suspected a homicide."
"The report was made by Elma, that woman is crazy. She always imagines some evil forces and such. We all know that's nonsense. In a kingdom under God, there is no place for evil forces."
"Where are Benson and Darcy now?" David asked. "We would like to understand the situation."
"I'm sorry, they were frightened and might not want to see anyone."
"Oh. Well then, Father," David shrugged, "since that's the case, we'll head back. It seems nothing serious has happened here."
"Is that so? Alright then, take care."
David walked a few steps, then as if he remembered something, he took out something resembling an instant camera, "Almost forgot, we need to leave some evidence that we were here. You know, official procedure. Do you mind if we take your picture, Father?"
"Ah? Oh, okay, please."
David aimed the camera at the priest, pressed the shutter, and soon, an instant photo was printed out from the camera. David pulled it out, glanced at it, and smiled, "I took a good photo, look Father, you look very imposing."
As he said that, David handed the photo to the priest. The latter took a look, and whether it was a problem with David's photography skills or the camera, the photo was very blurry. Still, one could vaguely make out the figure of a man standing on the lawn, but some eerie colors formed something resembling segments on the man's torso.
"What is this…?" A sudden fear gripped the priest's heart.
"I'd like to know that too," David said, then seemingly out of nowhere, he pulled out a shotgun, aimed it at the photo, and then at the priest's head, and pulled the trigger.
"Bang!" The photo, along with the priest's head, were blown to pieces, leaving a headless corpse on the ground.
"That was easy?" Morris was taken aback.
He had seen the photo too. The magical colors on the person's torso in the photo taken by the magic detection camera showed a deep purple, indicating a very high level of magic.
But just as he spoke, the priest's corpse on the ground suddenly twitched. Then, with a couple of snaps, all four limbs bent backward, propping up the headless body. The flesh on the ribs stretched out and bent downward, turning into limbs resembling crab legs and supporting the body on the ground.
The monster raised the priest's legs as if wielding two pincers like a crab.
"What is this thing…" Morris was shocked by the horrifying scene.
But David had already loaded a few enchanted bullets into his shotgun, "You're in luck, Morris. This is a demigod!"
After firing a shot that sent the crab-like person flying several meters away, he grabbed Morris and started sprinting towards the dock.
"Elena, how's the mental communication? Can we send a message out?!"
"No good! Communication's being jammed!"
David clenched his teeth; in some magic disaster events, due to intense magic fluctuations, the stability of mental communication was not very reliable, but there was still a way, "There's a magic radio on the boat..."
But before he could finish, a huge figure emerged from the water at the coast, its enormous pincers clamping onto the boat they had arrived in, lifting it mid-air, then snapped it in half as if breaking a toy.
The giant crab, as large as a castle, slowly crawled up from the coast. The cottages on the dock crumbled to rubble under its feet like they were made of paper.
"Is, is that also a demigod?" Morris trembled.
"No, that thing is probably some kind of evil deity."
With a bitter smile, David said, "What kind of reverse potion did I drink to always run into this kind of thing?!"
Among magic disasters, one of the most dangerous involves cultists' sacrifices, collective suicide blood sacrifices of monsters, etc., drawing the Countermeasure Bureau's attention. These events might bring forth extremely terrifying beings, often claiming to be gods.
The monsters controlled or manipulated by these "gods" are known as "demigods," equally troublesome. Even a strong A-class team made up entirely of wizards could easily be annihilated if not careful.
Including this time, David had encountered divine-related events twice in just three months, an unlucky streak indeed.
Now that the boat was destroyed and with such a large thing blocking the shore, escaping back to the mainland was temporarily impossible, "Let's run towards the island, find communication tools, report this, and request satellite support."
But the next moment, over a dozen figures surrounded them. They started walking on two legs, but soon, they all dropped to the ground, crawling sideways.
The priest "walked" up again, its body sprouting an intestine-like tail, picking up its own head.
The head said, "You can't run. Join us. Return to the mother's embrace, share the mother's power. This is the gospel given to you by the gods."
"I don't want to turn into seafood!" David snorted, transforming into a giant wolf and rushing forward, sending several crab people flying.
But before he could get far, the giant crab deity suddenly spat out a stream of water.
The water stream, like a laser, instantly pierced through Elena, then swept across, cutting several crab people in half. Morris teleported into the air, but with David's large body, his reaction wasn't as quick, and he was still cut by the water stream, severing both legs.
Elena was dead, and David knew there was no escape. He looked at Morris, "Morris, teleport and escape! Once you're out of the magic disaster area, you can contact headquarters again, request support, and bomb this place to avenge us."
After speaking, he took out his backpack, ready to go down fighting.
But then, a voice entered Morris's mind.
"Detecting a deity disaster, Godslayer Cannon ready. Please evacuate all personnel from 'False God' within a hundred meters. Godslayer Cannon countdown: 10, 9…"
"3, 2, 1…"
A blinding pillar of light broke through the clouds, striking directly atop the giant crab.
The next moment, it was firmly pressed to the ground, its body corroded and carbonized by the green light, and after more than half a minute, it turned to ash with a final cry of unwillingness.
Morris watched the scene, stunned. Suddenly, space in front of him twisted, and a blonde girl appeared out of nowhere.
"I'm Lucas," the girl said, "Are you the investigator here? Report the situation."
Morris, still reeling from the sudden disappearance of the giant deity, took a moment to gather his thoughts. He looked at Lucas, her presence a stark contrast to the chaos that had just unfolded. "Yes, I am. We were investigating a series of mysterious disappearances and disturbances in this village. It escalated quickly into an encounter with what we believed was a demigod, possibly controlled or influenced by a greater deity."
Lucas listened intently, her expression serious yet calm. "And the Godslayer Cannon? That was your doing?"
"No, that was beyond our capabilities. It activated automatically, detecting the deity-level threat. It saved us in the nick of time," Morris explained, still not fully comprehending how narrowly they had escaped annihilation.
Lucas nodded, "The Godslayer Cannon is part of a failsafe system designed to eliminate deity-level threats that emerge within heavily populated or strategically important areas. It's rarely used, given its potential collateral damage. The fact that it activated is concerning and indicates the level of threat you faced was significant."
Morris glanced back at the spot where the giant crab deity had been, now nothing but scorched earth. "It was powerful. Without the cannon, I'm not sure how we would have handled it. The creature was capable of controlling or transforming humans into... servants, or extensions of itself."
"Transformations and control are typical of deity-level entities. They often seek to expand their influence through followers or by creating demi-deities." Lucas took a moment to survey the area, then focused back on Morris. "Your actions here likely saved many lives, directly and indirectly. The Countermeasure Bureau will need to investigate this further. Deity-level events are rare but can be catastrophic without intervention."
Morris nodded, feeling a mixture of relief and burden at her words. "What's the next step?"
"First, secure the area and ensure no remnants of the deity's influence remain. We'll need to debrief you and your team fully. After that, our specialists will conduct a thorough investigation to prevent anything similar from happening again. This might also involve purging any lingering magical anomalies or corrupted individuals."
"And the villagers?" Morris asked, concerned about the people who had been caught up in the chaos.
"Evacuation and examination. Any exposure to deity-level magic can have unpredictable effects. They'll need to be screened for magical corruption and psychological trauma. We'll take care of them." Lucas assured him.
Morris felt the weight of his responsibility lighten slightly with Lucas's assurances. "Thank you. There's much to do, then."
Lucas smiled, a reassuring yet somber expression. "Yes, there is. But you're not alone in this. The Countermeasure Bureau, and others like us, are committed to protecting humanity from these threats. Let's get started."
With that, Morris and Lucas set about the task of securing the aftermath of a deity-level event, the first of many steps in understanding and combating the kind of threat that had nearly overwhelmed them that day.
