Chapter 409: Chapter 409: The Explosion
In the desolate plains of Central Siberia, amidst a snowstorm at temperatures below minus twenty degrees, a convoy of giant tracked transport vehicles slowly advanced through the darkness, resembling a long snake.
Before long, they converged with other transports from different locations, lining up in two rows before a mountain peak.
A massive steel door, four to five meters thick, had automatically opened, allowing the two lines of transport vehicles to enter the belly of the mountain.
Inside the mountain, there was no light, but a giant blast furnace in the distance continuously poured molten iron downwards.
In the radiance of that infernal glow, a vast space filled with various machines could be seen, all operating ceaselessly.
This place seemed like a factory.
However, unlike ordinary factories, this underground facility saw not a single human presence. All machinery operated automatically without any space or buttons for human control.
At the eastern side of this massive, unmanned factory, in an area designated as the raw material warehouse, the transport vehicles finally reached their destination.
They stopped at predetermined locations, and then numerous mechanical arms extended from the walls on both sides, skillfully unloading the modular containers from the transport vehicles, then refueling and servicing them.
Two heavy-duty arms also extended from above, lifting the containers onto a conveyor belt over twenty meters wide. The containers were immediately opened by the surrounding mechanical arms, and the processed ingots of various materials were sorted and sent to different workshops.
Such conveyor belt systems were spread throughout the factory, carrying raw materials into various standardized workshops to become parts, which were then assembled into wholes by mechanical arms in the assembly shops.
At the end of the conveyor belts was a mega-automated warehouse, expanded with countless Undetectable Extension Charms. Inside, rows upon rows of shelves reached into the distance, laden with drones, mechanical dogs, small tracked tanks, and even various models of heavy artillery and missiles.
The dark steel remained silent under the Siberian cold wind, known to no one in the world but Murphy.
...
In an ultra-clean space beneath the mountain, an experiment with magical materials was underway.
This level was divided into three hundred ultra-clean laboratories, each with ten rows of experiment tables, ten tables per row. Dozens of mechanical arms operated on each table, applying magic of different frequencies, intensities, and properties to the pre-processed materials.
Every two minutes, an experiment was conducted, analyzing the magical properties of tens of thousands of materials. This relentless experimentation had been ongoing for months and was set to continue indefinitely.
The vast amount of experimental data was collected and initially analyzed by the "Binary Tree," a brain-like supercomputer beneath the labs, before being uploaded to the cloud database "Araiya" through the mental network for research by all Ravenclaw members connected to Murphy's mental network.
Even with such rapid data generation, sometimes it still couldn't keep up with the demand in the labs. Following the success of the Future Research Institute, an increasing number of labs began using time acceleration spells to hasten the production of results.
"Time," Murphy mused in an underground lab, "might be the greatest force in existence."
"Any minor change can, with the aid of time, become an exponential transformation."
"The intelligence granted to us by millions of years of human evolution, the wisdom from tens of thousands of years of civilization, and the knowledge from hundreds of years of study are now, with the aid of magic, reaching a tipping point."
"The world is undergoing an unparalleled explosion."
"Its brilliance and splendor are no less significant than the Cambrian explosion half a billion years ago."
"This explosion is happening because we have been actively accumulating, actively seeking change. The more we know, the more power we have."
"But you can't achieve this," Murphy said, looking at a crab trapped in a giant glass box, still slowly regenerating.
Its main body was obliterated by the orbital cannon, but many clones remained. This one, captured by Lucas for research, was just one of them.
"Your power comes from faith. The process of drawing power is somewhat passive," Murphy continued, "Of course, your power will gradually return as magic resurges, but as long as the speed of the technological explosion outpaces the speed of magic resurgence, we need not worry about your existence."
"Time is on our side."
"Humanity." The crab's mandibles clicked together, producing a clanking sound, "You know nothing of the power of deities."
"Oh?" Murphy smiled.
"You're trapped here, and yet you remain so arrogant." Murphy shook his head, "We've captured several individuals claiming to be deities. Of course, you've not yet regained your full power, but we've already gathered enough data to be far from ignorant about you."
"Deities are the apex of magic."
"Your power comes from faith, and faith is a concept in the realm of the mind. You've utilized certain concepts, imaginations, emotions in human thinking to construct a set of arguments for why one should believe in you, thereby defining your authority."
"This set of arguments is essentially a covenant with your followers, a pact binding you to them. You provide some conveniences for your followers, allowing you to borrow their spiritual power."
"This spiritual power converges on you as a node, granting you magic far exceeding that of hundreds or thousands of wizards. And the concept at the core of your priesthood becomes your divine office."
"For example, you, who presides over water and the sea, thus wield water and ocean-related magic with tremendous power."
"This logic belongs to what we call the 'Path of the Mind.'"
"The reason your magic is so powerful is merely because you, through your 'divine office,' have purified immense spiritual power, thereby elevating your magical level. We have long understood this principle."
"No, you don't understand," the crab's mandibles struck, "You may know knowledge and technology, you may excel in using the power of reason, but you do not understand humanity."
"Humanity?" Murphy laughed, "You talk to a human about humanity?"
The crab found no humor in it, its voice as monotone and cold as ever, "Perhaps your intelligence, superior to your peers, makes you arrogant, to the point of disdain for understanding, but human folly far exceeds your imagination."
"Knowledge and reason are virtues only a few are privileged to possess."
"Ignorance and obscurity are the truth of this world."
"Humanity, weak and selfish, shortsighted and fond of self-deception. Compared to the effort of understanding a truth, they prefer to believe in an authority; compared to struggling in reality to the best of their ability, they'd rather immerse themselves in false fantasies."
"This is the essence of your species; this is human nature."
"Humanity is trapped by its own nature, but gods can use this to their advantage, driving and directing them. You may be human, but deities are the masters of exploiting human nature."
"You ignited the explosion of technology."
"But we, too, are waiting for an explosion. An explosion ultimately brought about by human folly."
...
Meanwhile, thousands of kilometers away, in Rome, at the Parliament Building, several young wizards applied Disillusionment Charms to themselves and boldly walked in.
