Chapter 135: Magical Power
After the fight with the poachers, Cael and Cassandra made their way back to the castle. It was late by the time Cael found himself in Hagrid's hut, retelling the whole encounter.
Hagrid frowned, scratching his beard. "I'll have a word with the Centaurs," he promised. "They'll send some o' their own to keep an eye on that area. We can't have poachers sneakin' around the forest."
True to his word, Hagrid started patrolling the edges of the forest himself, but the poachers didn't show up again. At least, not for now.
Back in the Room of Requirements , Cael buried himself in his Ancient Runes book. Hours passed as he memorized symbols and meanings, and before he knew it, his system's voice echoed in his head.
"Congratulations, Host, quest complete."
Cael raised an eyebrow, surprised. "Already? Huh… I didn't even notice. Guess learning runes is more fun than I thought."
"Prepare to receive your reward," the system added. "I suggest you brace yourself."
A soft ding followed:
⸻
[Quest Complete: Foundation of Improvement]
Objective: Learn 1,200 Ancient Runes (Magical Script)
Reward: +20 Magic Power
⸻
Suddenly, his body burned with heat, sweat pouring down his face as his chest tightened painfully.
"Hey… System, is this normal? Or am I about to blow up from too much magic?" Cael asked through gritted teeth.
The system answered in its usual lazy tone. "Relax, you're not going to explode. Your magic is growing fast, that's all. Your body's adjusting to the sudden boost. Normally, it takes four to five years to build this much magic. But thanks to me, you get the express route. Might hurt a bit, though."
It paused, then added teasingly, "At least you won't be blasted like those Certain People who—"
"Yeah, yeah, stop before you say something racist… ugh…" Cael groaned as the pain worsened. His muscles ached, his head throbbed, and for a moment, he wondered if passing out was an option.
Eventually, the pain faded. His body felt lighter, his breathing steadier. But when he moved his hands, he frowned. "System… I don't feel different. Shouldn't I feel… powerful or something? Was the upgrade a scam?"
"Use your brain, Host," the system sighed. "You won't feel anything just sitting there. Try using magic—then you'll see."
Curious, Cael stood and began testing his spells. The Cutting Charm sliced cleaner and faster than ever. The Disarming Charm flew from his wand with more force, and his Aegis Vitae barrier doubled in size, lasting far longer than before.
Even his fire spells roared to life with sharper control, and his rune enchantments pulsed with stronger energy.
A grin stretched across Cael's face. "Sweet… At least now I can stand my ground against normal wizards without getting overwhelmed by their magic power ."
He snapped his fingers. "Alright, System, show me my status."
The familiar interface appeared in his mind:
