Chapter 30: Chapter 30: The Professors
Ron shrieked, clutching his face: "You killed a troll?!"
Harry looked at everyone. Seeing that no one else seemed to be paying attention to Ron, he said, "No, Hermione knocked the troll out." He paused, then unconsciously added, "With a Levitation Charm."
The reason for their earlier conflict in the Charms classroom was that Hermione had tried to teach Ron how to properly use the Levitation Charm, but her "instructive" tone had only annoyed Ron further.
"—Hermione?" Ron was indeed astonished, muttering, "That—how is that possible? That was... that was a troll!"
Hermione let out a forceful "hmph." Gripping her wand, both excited and terrified, she stared at the motionless creature on the floor, as if something within her bloodline had awakened.
Padma peeked out from behind Wade, whispering, "Is the troll dead?"
"No," Wade said, looking at the troll's slightly rising and falling chest. "Just knocked out."
"Oh—that's good then," Padma patted her chest.
Suddenly, there was a flurry of footsteps—Professor McGonagall rushed forward first, her face pale; closely followed by Professor Snape, his black robes billowing behind him; then Professor Flitwick, his small stature running incredibly fast, but still unable to catch up to the first two; finally, Professor Quirrell, who upon seeing the troll's calloused foot squarely in front of him, immediately clutched his chest and let out a sob, looking as if he was about to faint.
Snape quickly glanced at Harry, who stood dumbfounded to the side, then bent down to examine the troll. Professor Flitwick, in his uniquely reedy voice, squeaked, "Oh, Merlin! Children, are you alright?"
"We're fine, Professor!" Michael said excitedly. "Except for almost being sick from the troll's stench."
Professor Flitwick happily patted his arm, praising loudly, "Well done! First years—defeated a troll! I dare say not many people could do that! How did you defeat this big fellow?"
"Hahaha, it was a team effort," Michael tried to pull his grinning mouth back, speaking as modestly and seriously as possible, "Potter rushed out and attracted its attention—"
Professor Snape immediately glared at Harry with an intimidating gaze. Harry quickly lowered his head, wishing Michael had never mentioned him, while Ron beside him looked on enviously.
"We all used Avifors to distract it, and then Wade used a spell—"
Michael forgot the name and turned to Wade.
"Slippery Surface," Wade said.
"Right—it was Slippery Surface, which made the troll fall," Michael continued. "And finally, Hermione used the Levitation Charm to knock it out."
Professor Flitwick clapped and praised, "Excellent teamwork! Simply marvelous! Achieving such remarkable results with simple spells, I'm giving each of you five points!"
"Filius!"
Professor McGonagall shouted loudly, her unprecedentedly stern tone making Professor Flitwick, who had been happily gesticulating, shrink back and quietly shut his mouth, standing to the side.
The green-robed witch swept her cold gaze over everyone. Every student who met her eyes involuntarily lowered their head, including Wade.
"Trolls are extremely dangerous creatures, and countless adult wizards have been killed by them! The moment you encounter one, you should immediately run and find a professor to handle it! You were lucky this time not to be killed by it!—Miss Granger!"
Hermione flinched.
Professor McGonagall looked at the girl's brown head and asked, "I recall you took leave this afternoon due to feeling unwell. Why are you here?"
"I..." Hermione probably hadn't lied to a teacher before. Now, questioned directly, her mind was a mess, and she stammered, "I thought—I read about trolls in a book, I thought—"
Wade firmly placed a hand on the girl's shoulder and pushed her aside—this silly girl wasn't about to say she thought she could fight a troll and secretly came to take it on alone, was she? That excuse was so foolish even a troll wouldn't believe it.
Even if they didn't believe it, what if someone blamed them for the troll getting into the castle? Don't think such things couldn't happen; Wade remembered Harry being misunderstood by his schoolmates more than once or twice in the original story.
"She felt better in the evening and didn't want to miss the feast, so we were originally preparing to go to the Great Hall together," Wade said calmly. "Passing by here, Hermione and Padma went to the lavatory. Michael and I waited for a bit, and we encountered the troll when we left. We certainly should have run immediately, but it happened so suddenly, everyone was startled and didn't react in time. Fortunately, Harry Potter distracted the troll and also alerted us."
The professors looked at Harry again. The boy's face flushed bright red; he felt utterly unworthy of such high praise.
Michael glanced at Wade thoughtfully, understanding something in his mind, and added, "Yes, he threw a bucket at the troll's head and shouted for us to run—it was really brave."
Professor Snape: "—A bucket?"
Harry stared at the floor, feeling as if he was being flayed alive by Professor Snape's gaze—he now suspected these two Ravenclaws were trying to distract the professors by praising him so much.
"And you, Mr. Weasley?" Professor McGonagall turned to Ron. "Why weren't you obediently back in your dormitory?"
Ron had been preoccupied with the thought that he should have been with Harry then, so he could have been the hero who saved everyone, and most importantly, impress that haughty Granger. Now, suddenly called out by Professor McGonagall, he was speechless, forgetting what he was supposed to say.
Professor McGonagall's gaze grew sharper.
Harry could only step in for his good friend, mustering his courage: "Ron was trying to warn us about the troll—"
"Yes, we all heard him!" Professor Snape suddenly sneered. He said sarcastically, "Shouting loudly in the corridor, as if afraid the troll wouldn't find him—I suppose your books should mention that trolls have more sensitive hearing? Oh—Mr. Weasley's textbook probably hasn't even been opened, has it? Just like our boy wonder—Mr. Harry Potter distracting the troll with a bucket—Hmph, a bucket?! I truly hope you haven't forgotten you're a wizard!"
The Gryffindor duo's ears turned red with shame and indignation.
Michael secretly gave Wade a thumbs-up in his mind—if they hadn't praised Harry Potter, it might have been them enduring the sarcasm right now. He didn't know that Snape's obsession with Harry was eternal and undying. Even if there were a thousand people there, he would only see Harry Potter.
But with Professor Snape speaking, Professor McGonagall's anger seemed to subside. She mused, "Since there are extenuating circumstances, I won't deduct any additional points from you. I will inform Professor Dumbledore of this matter. Now, all of you, hurry back to your common rooms—the students are enjoying the Halloween feast in their respective houses!"
Everyone quickly left. Once out of the professors' sight, someone suddenly let out a chuckle, and then the rest of them started laughing.
