Harry Potter: Journey to Godhood

Chapter 454: Chapter 454: Alaric's Strategy

"Sandor, you have truly disappointed me!" This was the first thing Alleria said after barging into Alaric's room.

"What?" Alaric, who had been engrossed in studying Silvermoon City's political dynamics, was taken aback by the ranger's startling words. "Alleria, what do you mean by that?"

"Don't you know why yourself?" Alleria's tone was still sharp, but as she looked at Alaric, her voice softened.

"Think carefully. Why did I set aside my own mission to temporarily return to Silvermoon City with you? Your behavior has truly let me down."

In that moment, Alleria resembled a stern yet caring elder sister, chastising her younger brother out of exasperation.

This emotion melted Alaric's initial impatience, and instead, he began to explain gently.

"You've misunderstood, Sister Alleria," Alaric said with a wry smile. "I've been preparing these past few days to persuade the Silvermoon Council."

"Is this how you prepare?" Alleria shot him a doubtful look. "Accepting invitations from dawn till dusk, attending banquet after banquet, and receiving so many gifts of art?

I never knew you were so interested in high elven artistry. If that's the case, why didn't you tell me? While the Windrunner family may not be a grand noble house, we're no small family either.

If you truly like art, I could have given you plenty of pieces. Why do you need to go about it this way?

Or could it be that you've already fallen for the endless variety of noble gatherings here in Silvermoon City?"

Seeing her earnest concern and the genuine care she expressed for him, Alaric felt a surge of emotion, even an impulse to embrace Alleria.

And so, he did exactly that.

As usual, his actions were direct.

Caught off guard by Alaric's sudden move, Alleria was first startled, then blushed at the unfamiliar sensation. Ultimately, however, she warmly accepted it.

Indeed, she still regarded Alaric as a child.

"Thank you for your concern, Sister Alleria," Alaric murmured into the depths of her embrace, his voice muffled but sincere.

"However, attending gatherings and accepting gifts are indeed part of my preparation to persuade the Silvermoon Council.

I don't know how things work among high elves, but this is how we humans handle diplomacy."

After a while, Alleria gently extricated herself from the embrace, signaling for him to continue.

"At the negotiation table, the lords of the Silvermoon Council are my opponents.

But just like in battle, before persuading them, I must first understand my adversaries," Alaric patiently explained.

"That's why you've been attending their banquets?"

"Exactly." Alaric nodded. "Through my interactions with them, I can learn about them. Before I reveal my mission, they won't be on guard against me. This is my opportunity."

"Fine, I suppose you have a point," Alleria said with a relieved smile. Her greatest joy was realizing Alaric had not strayed. "What other reasons do you have?"

"The other reason is reputation," Alaric continued. "Before the negotiations, I need to establish enough prestige within Silvermoon City in a short period of time."

"But you're already quite famous," Alleria remarked, puzzled. "Why else would they be inviting you so eagerly? I've never seen a human so welcomed in Silvermoon City.

Everyone admires your achievements in magic. Even among the Farstrider forces, I know of a human with talent, but... Well, I'll introduce him to you someday."

When Alleria mentioned this, Alaric noticed the pride in her eyes.

She was clearly proud of her human "younger brother's" popularity among the mages of Silvermoon City, even though he didn't have the best relationships with them.

When she brought up a human among the Farstriders, a name immediately came to Alaric's mind.

Nathanos Marris, the first and only human ranger.

After Sylvanas Windrunner became the Banshee Queen, he would take on the name Nathanos Blightcaller.

He was her most loyal subordinate and the only one to maintain an ambiguous relationship with her.

To Alaric, who had long coveted Sylvanas, this man was a formidable rival. He deeply hoped he was not too late.

Fortunately, according to the timeline of World of Warcraft, their ambiguous relationship began after Nathanos left the Farstriders to return to Lordaeron.

Alaric still had a chance, but he needed to act quickly—after all, having already gained favor with Sylvanas' elder sister Alleria, his chances of intervening were quite good.

But now was not the time to dwell on this. Alaric continued to explain his strategy to Alleria.

"You're right, Sister Alleria. Most of them have heard of me, but that's only hearsay," Alaric elaborated.

"As the saying goes, 'Seeing is believing.' You've mentioned that the greatest flaw of high elves is their disdain for other races.

Without firsthand experience of my abilities, as a human, I cannot earn their genuine respect.

Therefore, since arriving here, I have made it a point to meet every mage who wishes to see me, demonstrating my accomplishments and turning my reputation into real influence."

"I see," Alleria nodded thoughtfully. "And the gifts? Why accept so many artworks as gifts?"

"To bridge the gap and gain their acceptance—to some extent, make them see me as one of their own."

However, this explanation only deepened Alleria's confusion.

"This has to do with their psychology. While these elves recognize my magical prowess, my superiority in magic can unintentionally make them feel inferior when interacting with me.

Although this could foster admiration, given the innate arrogance of elves toward humans, such feelings are more likely to turn into alienation or even hostility," Alaric analyzed.

"Excessive alienation and rejection would be detrimental to my plans, so I need to provide them with some psychological compensation in other areas—art is the avenue I chose.

High elves generally love art, so by showing interest in it, I give them a field where they can feel 'superior' to me, or at least my equal."

"Accepting gifts serves a similar purpose. Most of these gifts are the elves' own creations. They're not too expensive but signify my appreciation of their artistic talents.

Moreover, accepting a gift creates a sense of indebtedness on my part, making the giver feel a psychological advantage over me.

This makes them more inclined to engage with me, thus narrowing the gap between us."

"Typical mages and their cunning ways," Alleria said, rolling her eyes at Alaric, though her eyes sparkled with amusement.

"Fine, as long as you know what you're doing. It seems you're indeed ready to face those mages in the Silvermoon Council."

Seeing this side of Alleria, Alaric felt both amused and helpless.

Ah, so this is what they call love me, love my dog. Beauty truly is justice. Normally disdainful of such political and social tactics, Alleria seemed proud of Alaric's mastery of them.

—Yes, please give me two more sisters like her!

Alaric thought cheerfully.
