"Ying~ Ying ying ying~~~"
A cute little sound served as Harry's alarm clock to wake up. His face felt a bit damp, and the white little ball of fluff resting on his pillow had its head nestled against Harry's face, looking like it was smiling foolishly while drooling.
The little Thunder Gale Dragon, Thor, seemed to be hungry. As Harry opened his eyes and made eye contact with Thor, he seemed to understand the message in those crystal-blue eyes.
"Finally awake, Thor."
The egg had hatched the previous afternoon, and Thor had been asleep since before the shell even cracked. It wasn't until the early hours of the next morning that the little one, having eaten too much, slowly woke up. The first thing it did upon waking was to whine and nudge Harry, wanting to be fed.
"Ying?"
The little one tilted its head in confusion, not quite understanding what Harry had said.
"Thor."
Harry reached out and tapped the little dragon's head. "Your name is Thor. Hagrid named you before you even hatched."
"Ying?"
"Thor," Harry repeated.
"Ying!"
Seemingly realizing that it was being called, the little dragon's cry sounded a little more cheerful. It then opened its mouth and grabbed Harry's outstretched finger, letting out a soft whining sound.
Although it hadn't looked particularly impressive at birth, that cute little voice was irresistibly endearing.
More than twelve hours after hatching, the small dragon's soft and translucent scales had started to harden. The fine scales, initially milky white, had taken on a faint blue-green hue, lighter than those of a typical Gale Dragon. Its previously bare back was no longer exposed, as a thin layer of tiny feathers had started to grow, even covering the fleshy wings that were supposed to have membrane-like skin.
Perhaps due to the Thunderbird lineage, Thor's body would eventually bear both feathers and scales. However, at this stage, with the scales and feathers still developing, the newly hatched Thor was admittedly rather awkward-looking. With its wrinkled and crumpled appearance, it could have easily been mistaken for an animated dough ball.
But now, Harry thought Thor looked much more pleasant than yesterday.
"How about trying a battery?" Harry suggested, unsure of what Thor would prefer to eat. He had prepared a variety of food for him the previous day. Both Gale Dragons and Thunderbirds could eat meat as soon as they hatched. Magical creature meat, rich in magic, was their favorite. However, when Thor was still in the egg, he had performed a lightning absorption technique. If it weren't for that lightning thread, the little Thunderbird, Neil, who had been feeding Thor, would probably have been left with weak legs for days.
To be thorough, Harry had even used Apparition to fetch a few crates of military-grade high-energy batteries from the more unofficial sources in the wizarding world. Some of them were used to charge powerful British "Centurion" heavy magnetic tanks, and the energy stored in them could easily last the Dursleys an entire year.
"Or do you want to try this?" Harry asked again.
A lightning thread reappeared at Harry's fingertips. Compared to the one from yesterday, this new thread was only about a fifth of the size.
Thor seemed to recognize it, but surprisingly, he wasn't at all interested. Instead, he clumsily swatted at it with his front paws, which still had membrane-like skin, trying to push it away. His wobbly little head seemed to be in rejection, and his tightly closed mouth showed no sign of opening.
"Yesterday, you were happily slurping it down, but today you're turning your nose up at it?" Harry asked, a bit bewildered. He put the lightning thread away, then grabbed a box of batteries from his dragon-hide bag and pulled out a tray of freshly cut horned camel meat. The horned camel, a bottom-tier member of the Forbidden Forest's food chain, was frequently hunted by various magical predators, and Thor had grown up eating it. Even Neil, the Thunderbird, loved the taste.
"Want to try?" Harry asked, setting the little dragon down between the high-energy batteries and the camel meat.
Harry was curious which side Thor would choose.
The little dragon tilted his head back and forth, clearly indecisive. Both sides smelled delicious to him, and after a brief struggle, Thor finally made up his mind.
Why choose? Both sides smelled so good, so why not have them both?
"Howl~"
Despite its tiny milk teeth that looked completely blunt, the horned camel meat was neatly cut in half as soon as Thor closed his mouth. His long tail quickly wrapped around the battery, which sparked with a flash of white electrical light.
In one bite, Thor immediately took a deep breath, and with a crackle of electricity and a flash of lightning, the meat began to emit a delicious roasted scent. The little Thunder Gale Dragon, barely fifty centimeters long and weighing less than twenty kilograms, had a surprisingly large appetite. In the next half hour, Thor consumed twice his body weight in tender meat, while the battery box next to him was drained halfway. The energy in the batteries was enough to power a soldier's squad for three hours of intense combat, but Thor had completely consumed it all.
Harry watched in amazement, a satisfied smile creeping onto his face. In Harry's eyes, eating a lot was a blessing. The more Thor ate, the faster he would grow, and the stronger he would become!
A burp, rich with the scent of roasted meat, echoed through the dormitory in the morning. The mouthwatering aroma from half an hour ago had already caused Harry's three roommates to wake up, wiping away drool and stumbling out of bed. They were now crouching at the side of Harry's bed, wide-eyed, curiously observing Thor, who had turned into a little fluffy wrecking ball.
"After gaining some weight, he actually looks kinda cute," Rolf said, extending a finger to poke at the little Thunder Gale Dragon's now-rounded belly. However, before his finger could make contact, a small lightning bolt zapped him, causing him to leap up with a startled cry.
"First, Neil shocked me, and now Thor's zapping me!" Rolf grumbled, his face covered in smoke. His wild, spiky hair made him look even more like a chaotic wrecking ball than Thor. "This world really has it out for me!"
"Look on the bright side, Rolf," Justin said calmly, patting Rolf's shoulder. "Maybe you just have a natural tendency to get shocked. It has nothing to do with the world picking on you."
"That's your idea of looking on the bright side?! I don't want to be the lightning rod for the world!" Rolf protested, clearly irritated.
"But when you get shocked, don't you seem to enjoy it?" Harry teased, grinning mischievously as he pointed at Rolf. "Look at that, you're practically wetting your pants from the pleasure."
"I—"
Flushed red, Rolf bolted out of the room, scrambling to put on his robe while hurriedly trying to change his mysteriously damp pajamas.
"That's my school robe!" Neville screamed, aghast. "My grandmother just bought it for me. I haven't even worn it yet!"
Neville's face showed a pitiful expression, though after spending more time with Harry and the others, his previous timidity and insecurity had mostly faded. Especially after receiving an excellent report card at the end of last year, his self-confidence had grown significantly.
"Not wearing it yet is actually better," Harry teased. "Next time, I'll treat you to a big meal, Neville. Let me borrow the robe first, and I'll wash it for you."
"Make sure you clean it well, and don't leave any... unpleasant odors," Justin added, grinning.
"Can we please not mention that?" Rolf groaned as he grabbed a basin and ran for the bathroom. "I'll get you a new one, Neville, and order one for Madam Mokejin as well!"
"No need for that," Neville said, scratching his head awkwardly. "Just make sure you wash it properly."
Once Rolf slammed the door behind him and left, the dormitory fell into an oddly quiet moment.
"Don't you guys want to poke this little ball of fluff?" Harry asked, looking at Thor, who was sprawled happily on his palm, limbs and tail spread out. Despite the ridiculousness of his lazy posture, he somehow exuded an odd cuteness. Justin and Neville hesitated, almost reaching out, but then they both lowered their heads in unison and shook them, not daring to touch the little dragon.
"By the way, Harry, this little guy is sticking his butt out," Neville pointed out, noticing how Thor had turned on his back in Harry's palm. The round, bloated belly began to shrink after a small lightning flash, and the dragon's rear end became more rounded.
"Thor, no pooping in your dad's hand!" Harry exclaimed. "C'mon, let's get you to the bathroom, hold it in for a bit!"
"Okay, okay, it's coming out! Harry, what shoes are you wearing? Hurry up, I'll open the door for you!"
A flurry of chaos ensued, marking the start of a new day. As a first-time dragon father, Harry, still a rookie in this role, was left a bit overwhelmed and unprepared.
He wrote to Professor Sprout, requesting a one-month leave of absence. As a diligent student who didn't need the professor to supervise him, it was easy for Harry to get an approval for such an unlikely break. During this time, he planned to properly get to know the Thunder Gale Dragon, Thor, who had disappointed him yesterday and whom he had underestimated.
Thor's unusual behavior had piqued Harry's interest. Perhaps Thor wasn't the "child of doom" like a cursed offspring, such as a tail-crawling eel that failed to inherit any good traits from its parents.
Thor had feathers, but dragons don't grow feathers. Due to a lack of proper developmental conditions, it seemed that Thor hadn't fully matured while still in the egg.
Harry temporarily moved out of the dormitory and built a small wooden house next to Hagrid's cabin. Here, he could receive Hagrid's full guidance and have easy access to all the food Thor needed.
As Harry had suspected, Thor, the Thunder Gale Dragon, was like a premature child, a poor creature that hadn't fully developed its body. Hagrid and Harry took Thor to visit their hunting grounds, and with these two ever-vigilant bodyguards, Thor explored the Forbidden Forest, where he eventually found his favorite foods.
Be it flying in the air or running on the ground, any feathered magical creatures were unfortunately at the wrong place at the wrong time. Thor seemed to lack certain essential trace elements in his body, and the Thunder Gale Dragon egg hadn't provided the necessary nutrients for the Thunderbird's growth. So, his post-hatch diet was meant to make up for these deficiencies.
Even the cute little puffballs—Ball-rolling Birds—fell victim to Harry's hands. Cute? Not a chance. If his little one liked it, Harry wouldn't hesitate. After all, nature follows the law of the jungle, and as long as it wasn't a matter of extinction, eating ten or eight didn't matter.
However, after about half a month, Thor grew tired of these bland bird-like creatures, and his diet started to resemble that of Thunderbirds and Thunder Dragons. Magical beasts rich in magic became his new favorite, especially the magic-laden organs, which opened up Thor's appetite even more.
Only two wealthy individuals who controlled the entire Forbidden Forest as their hunting ground could afford to feed the little guy this way. If other wizards saw Thor consuming things worth more than they could earn in ten lifetimes, they would likely start scheming.
After nearly twenty days of growth, Thor had completely transformed. His body now resembled a Thunder Dragon—long and strong with front limbs that were covered in a tough membrane connected to his body. The membrane was coated with silver-blue feathers that closely resembled the feathers of a Thunderbird. His back no longer bore a fin-like membrane; instead, long feathers stretched from his spine all the way to the tail. These feathers, much like a Thunderbird's tail feathers, were three times longer than those on his wings.
From behind, the Thunder Gale Dragon, shining with silver-blue light, looked dazzling under the sun. The golden dragon horns on his head stood out against the silver glow, making his back look extravagantly flamboyant, almost blinding. In contrast, the underside of his body, covered with dragon scales, appeared simple and elegant.
After all, this was the side facing downwards. If his underside were as radiant as his back and he inherited the Thunder Dragon's slow speed, Thor would become a giant target in the sky, an easy mark for any giant's club.
Though the Thunder Dragon was an ancient dragon species, its size wasn't particularly large. In comparison to the enormous ancient dragons that stretched hundreds of meters long, the relatively small Thunder Dragon looked incredibly cute.
Thor had grown so much during these past few weeks, not just in size but in abilities. Despite being considered a smaller dragon compared to giants like the Fire Dragons, his dense body weight surprised many. His standard weight of 160 tons wasn't light at all, especially when compared to the Soviet Iron Belly, a dragon raised by Hagrid that had wingspans longer than two Thunder Gale Dragons combined, and its body was three times longer than Thor's.
Yet, despite the impressive weight, it was the Thunder Gale Dragon's flight speed that had Hagrid and Harry most interested. Thor wasn't made for close combat, and his physical enhancements mainly served to increase his resilience and durability, rather than speed. But Harry remained hopeful that Thor would inherit some of the Thunderbird's speed. Even if he couldn't fly at hypersonic speeds, breaking the sound barrier would still be an achievement. After all, the Thunder Gale Dragon's sluggish flight was a bit embarrassing.
It didn't take long for Thor to prove he wasn't a cursed child. Newt Scamander, who had traveled far to see the creature, took hundreds of photos of the little dragon. Newt gave Hagrid the highest praise for his success in raising a new breed of dragon, one that was even more fascinating than anyone had imagined. Hagrid's work was already making waves in the magical community, and rumors of his accomplishments had spread far and wide.
A thick envelope, tied to Hedwig's leg, arrived one morning. As the first animal companion of Harry's, Hedwig was as close as ever, her loyalty unchanged despite the arrival of Thor. She was entrusted with delivering the letter to Fleur, a task she took with grace. Hedwig gave a little peck to Harry's finger, flapped her wings, and gave Thor a gentle tap on the head before soaring into the sky, a beacon of elegance and authority.
Thor, now accustomed to the concept of flight, gave a loud roar towards the sky, seemingly bidding farewell to Hedwig. Harry, holding Thor in his right hand, reassured him, "Don't worry, as you grow, you'll be able to fly as high as Hedwig one day."
Thor eagerly flapped his wings, and with a sudden push, Harry tossed him high into the air. Though his body, now weighing nearly 100 kilograms, made his flight somewhat unsteady, the little dragon flapped his wings hard, trying to maintain control. The gusts of wind tried to lift him, but Thor was still learning. He glided for about 100 meters before colliding with the head of the snoozing Iron Belly Dragon, Norbert.
The two dragons, despite having almost the same age, were vastly different in size. Thor was a small dragon, barely 1/30th of Norbert's size. The collision caused Norbert to snort, sending a gust of fiery breath towards Thor, who, stunned for a moment, recovered and playfully bit Norbert's ear in return.
Despite the playful moment, Thor was eager to try again, jumping into Harry's arms and making sounds as if he wanted to be tossed once more. Harry smiled and, with a deep breath, sent Thor soaring into the sky again. This time, Thor was ready. With a burst of thunderous sound and a flash of lightning, the dragon flew gracefully through the air, his wings slicing through the storm.
Unlike typical birds, the flying power of magical creatures like Thor came from their ability to channel magic, not just the simple flapping of wings. For Thor, it was the wind and storm that provided the lift, an ability not fully understood until now. With the mastery of his wings and the storm at his back, Thor was finally flying high, twisting and turning before landing lightly on the ground.
Thor was learning, and it seemed that with time, he would become the majestic and powerful dragon Harry had always hoped for.
