Chapter 22: 《Harry Potter: My Life as Hermione》Chapter 22: Collecting Boss Drops
Qin Yu had no idea how old Madam Pomfrey really was. But considering she'd already been the school nurse back when Snape, James, and Lily were students, it was safe to say she was one of the true fixtures of Hogwarts.
"Madam Pomfrey, how long was I out?" Qin Yu asked.
"About ten hours, give or take," she replied.
So, just one night's sleep? Qin Yu quickly got his bearings.
"What exactly happened to me yesterday?" he asked, still a little dazed.
"How much do you remember?" Madam Pomfrey countered, instead of answering directly.
Qin Yu frowned in concentration, trying to piece together the events of the previous day.
After a moment, he spoke slowly, "I remember going to look for Anna—she's a baby unicorn who got lost… At first, I was with George and Fred, but we got separated along the way… Then I heard a unicorn's cry, and followed it into a cave. Anna was there, but so were a lot of Acromantulas. We were surrounded… After that, everything's a blank."
He recounted what he could, carefully omitting anything about the system.
Madam Pomfrey nodded. "Professor Dumbledore found you in that cave. You were unconscious when he brought you here. I gave you a thorough examination and found you were simply sleeping—no serious injuries. As for what happened in detail, you'll have to ask Professor Dumbledore."
Qin Yu mulled it over. It seemed that after surrendering control to the Obscurus, he hadn't suffered any harm—at least, none that Madam Pomfrey could detect.
…
After one more checkup from Madam Pomfrey—and her assurance that he was perfectly fine—Qin Yu left the hospital wing and made a beeline for Dumbledore's office.
He knocked on the door and entered to find the white-bearded headmaster at his desk, with Fawkes the Phoenix perched just above him.
Right now, Fawkes looked a bit aged, his feathers lacking their usual luster.
Feathers, huh?
Qin Yu couldn't help but eye Fawkes a little longer, which earned him a wary look from the phoenix.
"Qin, I think I know why you're here. You want to know what happened last night, don't you?" Dumbledore began.
"Yes, Professor Dumbledore. I lost some of my memories from yesterday," Qin Yu admitted, snapping back to attention.
He then repeated the story he'd told Madam Pomfrey.
"I'm afraid I don't know much more than you," Dumbledore said gently. "All I know is that there was a tremendous magical disturbance deep in the Forbidden Forest last night. Professor McGonagall, Professor Snape, Professor Sprout, and I hurried there together. In a cave, we found a baby unicorn standing guard over your unconscious body—and beside you, a pile of Acromantula corpses. After that, I brought you back here."
…
So, I really did lose consciousness after the Obscurus took over, and ended up slaughtering all those attacking spiders, Qin Yu realized.
He'd survived, but the sensation of losing control like that… it was deeply unsettling.
"If I'm not mistaken, this burst of power was caused by your Obscurus losing control," Dumbledore continued, his tone gentle but serious. "In moments of extreme danger, the Obscurus instinctively seized control of your body to survive. I've seen this happen before… a long time ago, in someone else."
"Is there any way I can control this power?" Qin Yu asked, worry etched on his face. "Honestly, it scared me. I've never lost consciousness before—just had energy go wild, but I was always aware…"
"The fact that you fear it means you haven't lost yourself. That's a good sign," Dumbledore reassured him. "Don't worry, Qin. I've already spoken with the other professors. We'll help you learn to control it—or at the very least, ensure it doesn't spiral out of control and cause a disaster."
Warmth flooded Qin Yu's chest. "Thank you, Old Du—uh, Professor Dumbledore!"
"It's our duty as teachers to keep every student safe," Dumbledore said with a kind smile. "Now, go get some rest. Over the next couple of days, one of the professors will meet with you for some one-on-one help."
"Thank you, Professor Dumbledore. I feel much better knowing you're here!"
He was just about to stand up and leave when something occurred to him. "By the way, Professor, you said all the Acromantulas are dead, right?"
"Yes, all the adult Acromantulas are gone," Dumbledore confirmed.
"What about Aragog?" Qin Yu pressed.
Dumbledore's eyes flickered—of course he knew that name. "He's vanished too. No sign of him."
Qin Yu's eyes lit up.
"Professor, I won't take up any more of your time! Goodbye, Professor! Goodbye, Fawkes!"
He waved cheerfully to man and phoenix, then hurried out of the office.
After he'd gone, Dumbledore glanced at his companion. "Fawkes, looks like he knows your name."
The phoenix rolled his eyes and let out a disgruntled trill, making it clear he hadn't appreciated the way that young man had been eyeing him.
…
As soon as he left Dumbledore's office, Qin Yu made his way straight to Hagrid's hut, asking Hagrid's owl to summon George and Fred.
When the twins arrived, Qin Yu handed each of them a pair of Hagrid's specially made deerskin gloves and a large jar.
"What's all this for?" George asked, staring at the gloves and jar in confusion.
Fred looked equally baffled.
"To collect boss drops, obviously!" Qin Yu huffed, exasperated. "Honestly, you two have zero loot sense."
Before they could ask what "boss drops" even meant, Hagrid chimed in, "Qin wants to harvest Acromantula Venom."
At that, the Weasley twins' eyes lit up like Christmas.
They'd been in that cave yesterday too and seen Qin Yu unconscious, but at the time they'd only worried about his safety—not the treasure trove of Acromantula corpses lying all around.
Now, thanks to Qin Yu and Hagrid, they finally realized that those giant spider bodies were worth a fortune.
"I heard a pint of Acromantula Venom goes for a hundred Galleons—and that's if you can even find a buyer! Is that right, Qin?" Fred asked, practically bouncing with excitement.
"That price is ancient history. These days, it's at least a hundred and twenty Galleons a pint," Qin Yu replied with a grin.
When he'd visited Diagon Alley, he'd made a point of learning the prices for valuable magical items—Acromantula Venom, phoenix feathers, unicorn hair, and the like. After all, Hogwarts was practically overflowing with rare magical resources.
Energized by the news, George and Fred could hardly contain themselves.
So, the three boys each grabbed a big jar and set off for the Forbidden Forest, their laughter and cheers echoing through the grounds.
Hagrid followed at a steady pace, carrying a burlap sack filled with tools, his stride easy and unhurried behind them.
