Chapter 129: Chapter 129 - Adams Arrives as Promised
"William! William!"
Who's calling me?
My head hurts—right, my wand, my wand!
As his hand quickly reached for his wand, the warmth that spread from his palm eased William's splitting headache.
Instinctively, he pulled out his wand and cast a Stunning Spell towards the source of the sound, then rolled to the side, ready to dodge.
"Thud!" "Thud!"
Two almost simultaneous thuds of heavy objects hitting the ground rang out. William endured the pain and cast a Shield Charm on himself, finally clearing his head—right, I'm at Hogwarts, Dumbledore is still at Hogwarts, there can't be any sneak attacks!
'Did I have a nightmare? Why can't I remember anything?'
William suspected he had dreamt of being attacked or being back in Azkaban—but he couldn't find any memory of such a dream.
'The rooster incident has made me too nervous—until that damned curse is gone, I probably won't sleep well.'
William subconsciously looked out the window and couldn't help but sigh.
Damn cloudy day!
But he quickly realized something was wrong. Why was the weather so cloudy?
Moreover, he couldn't feel the usual irritability of a cloudy day; he only felt a headache now, with no sense of stuffiness from the overcast sky.
'What time is it? Should I sleep a bit more?'
William glanced at the clock—after all this time, he was already very familiar with how to read a wizarding clock.
'It's already four o'clock, can't waste time, you have to work hard—wait! Only four o'clock?'
William shook his head, then remembered his stunning spell from just now.
—
"Adams, say something?"
"It's only four in the morning—I can't just drag you into my room, can I? If you came out of my room so early in the morning, who knows what stories those students would make up."
"Of course I shouldn't have attacked you with a Stunning Spell, but that was just an instinctive reaction to being woken up, wasn't it?"
"It's not that I won't lift the spell for you, it's just that I wasn't awake in the middle of the night, was I? At least I haven't gone back to sleep yet; I've come out to lift the spell for you, haven't I?"
William, dressed in his everyday clothes, was earnestly trying to persuade the Herbology professor at his room door.
After realizing he had apparently knocked someone out, he had intended to go out quickly to check, but fearing that wearing pajamas would cause unnecessary rumors, he delayed a bit, which, including the initial dazed period, meant Adams lay outside the door for nearly ten minutes.
After persuading for a long time, William realized that the Herbology professor was truly angry—he hadn't said a single word.
"No, Adams, be reasonable—it's four in the morning, and on a weekend no less. It's a bit much for you to wake someone up. You have to admit you were knocked out; doesn't that count as you attacking first?"
"No, not really. I mainly wanted to see how many more persuasive words you could come up with."
Adams's face showed a mischievous grin, making William's teeth itch slightly.
"Petrificus Totalus!"
"William, you can't do that!" Adams was stunned and cried out, but by the time he finished speaking, he realized William's target wasn't him.
"What's going on?"
Adams looked at where William's wand was pointing; there was nothing there but the wall—theoretically, that is.
But if there was really nothing there, the spell would have exploded against the wall, making a huge sound, and Hogwarts Castle's defenses would have nullified most of the damage caused by the spell.
"Who, or what?"
Adams pulled out his wand and became alert.
"I don't know, you keep an eye on my back, pay attention to small movements," William replied without turning his head.
He cast a Shield Charm on himself, then slowly approached the object his spell had just hit. He stopped just before reaching it and waved his wand towards his office behind him.
A large stack of parchment rustled as it flew over under the influence of the Summoning Charm, quickly tearing into small fragments under the spell's effect, then drifting towards the concentrated area under William's command.
The parchment fragments quickly revealed the object, which was a humanoid shape.
"Invisibility Cloak, Accio!"
William waved his wand, but nothing happened.
"An Invisibility Cloak? Is it a person, William?"
Adams's voice came from behind.
"It's not an Invisibility Cloak—my Summoning Charm isn't working, and I'm not using a nonverbal spell. Can Invisibility Cloaks now be enchanted with additional protective charms?"
"You're asking me? You're the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor!"
Adams's retort made William feel a bit awkward—Invisibility Cloaks were expensive, single-use items that wore off after a few years and overlapped in effect with Disillusionment Charms. Only the super-rich or those with Ministry-level collective purchasing power could afford them. He had only looked into how to counter them and hadn't bothered to learn more.
Anyway, he couldn't afford one at the moment, and being able to deal with them was good enough; there was no need to get fancy.
Waving his wand again, William controlled the parchment to roll into a stick. After adding another Petrificus Totalus for good measure, he carefully poked the suspected object.
"It really is an Invisibility Cloak, and it's a student."
William said to the back, feigning a sigh of relief, then the stick in his hand scattered, turning into fragments that struck out in a circle around him.
"Huh? No accomplices?"
William raised an eyebrow, finally truly relaxing—this action made Adams completely abandon any thoughts of retaliation.
'You Dark Arts practitioners, your hearts are filthy!'
"Adams, come take a look. Staying up all night, wandering the corridors, violating school rules—how can there be such a mischievous student?"
Adams rolled his eyes—who are you targeting, you?
"Harry Potter?"
A disgruntled Adams exclaimed, causing William, who was tidying up the scattered paper fragments, to turn his head.
He had been busy mocking Adams and tidying up the paper fragments, and after confirming it was a student, he had gone back to his own business—he could barely remember the names of the students he had given detention to in the month he'd been at school, so why be surprised by a newly caught rule-breaker?
"Something very unpleasant happened yesterday, and this morning you're wandering around the castle, wearing an Invisibility Cloak—I think I need an explanation, Mr. Potter."
William magically restored the gathered paper fragments to their original state and walked over with a stack of parchment.
"Professor—I heard strange noises, like someone was very angry. Their voice woke me up, and I've been searching since I left the common room. The voice was intermittent, but I couldn't find out who was making it."
"A voice?"
"Yes, Professor—it's sounding again!"
Harry suddenly raised his voice, pointing to a side of the wall and saying, "Over there, right there!"
"Petrificus Totalus!"
William's spell followed immediately, but it had no effect—the wall that was hit made a sound, but it quickly disappeared.
"It's gone, the sound is gone."
Harry shook his head, giving William the illusion of listening to a ghost story.
"Who's there?"
A searchlight lit up, and Mr. Filch appeared.
