Chapter 48: Doing Good Deeds and Accumulating Virtue in the Treasury

The underground vault of Gringotts stretched in all directions, with only a few torches casting flickering light, but these could not quell the fire of greed in Cole's heart. The levitation spell worked well here, though apparition was of no use.

When he reached a vault's door and noted the family logo on it, Cole knew he was in the right place. Little Avery, if you're unlucky, you'll be the first to go. There was no way there was nothing in the Vaults of the Twenty-Eight Sacred Families.

Cole knew that the wizard families would definitely deposit valuable items in Gringotts, and he couldn't comprehend why the wizards trusted the goblins so much. He took out the master key and inserted it directly. The door of the vault swung open, and a puff of dust rose.

Cole wasted no time, using magic spells to clean it up. As he stepped inside, Cole was dazzled by the gold that greeted his eyes. He was indeed dealing with a pureblood; even after Voldemort's looting, there were still so many gold Galleons left.

The shelves nearby were filled with potions and countless magical creature materials. The items here were worth at least hundreds of thousands of gold Galleons, and now they were all Cole's for the taking.

He slapped his belt, and a magical tornado swept through the vault, causing countless gold Galleons and materials to flow into his storage belt. The Avery family's treasury emptied in an instant, rendering it barren enough to make a mouse despair.

Suddenly, the vault was bathed in red light, and curses flew towards Cole, yet he dodged them one by one. The magic energy of his protective armor was nearly tangible, and naturally, it could block the assault. As for Avada's green light, Cole merely scoffed—what could little Avada do to him?

He had anticipated this situation, knowing the vaults would be protected by traps. Pureblood families were no fools. However, he had a better move, and as for the curses on some special items, he would deal with them later.

Turning toward the adjacent row of vaults, Cole was thrilled. He opened one door after another without stopping. Gold Galleons? Collected. The Crown of Merlin's Age? Good stuff, hold on to it. Family crest? Useless, discard it. Merlin's underpants? How could this be a treasure? Cole struggled to understand the thoughts of these wizards.

Along the way, Cole encountered several goblins with red eyes. Despite having green eyes, Cole could see that they appeared red. He was ready for confrontation but refrained from using his spell, knowing a senior was responsible. Everyone knew that Senior Tom excelled at using Avada Kedavra.

Rumor had it that Senior Tom practiced the Avada Kedavra even in the bathroom, and the Slytherin bathrooms glowed with green ambient light.

Though the Black family had amassed considerable wealth over the years, seeing the contents of these vaults made Cole understand the true meaning of pure-blood nobility. There were so many valuable items that Cole wondered if the pure-blood nobles would be livid after this incident.

At the very least, they should buy some cakes or something to honor their ancestors since Cole had taken the family treasures accumulated over several generations.

After collecting so many gold Galleons, Cole grew weary. The gold had lost its allure for him, and it was not until he arrived at a particular vault that the fire of greed in his eyes faded.

There was a huge phoenix adorning the vault door. No need to guess; Cole knew which family's treasury this was.

The Dumbledore family was renowned for its talents, either as masters of magic or Obscurus. Of course, there were also those who fished in troubled waters.

Cole held the key and contemplated whether he should open the principal's vault. Would the principal come after him? Though he was not afraid of Dumbledore, the exposure of such an act would tarnish his good reputation and lead to a lot of trouble in the future.

As the head of the Black family, Cole was very concerned about his reputation. At least in the Ministry of Magic, he was known for spending money like water. After hesitating for a moment, Cole took the key and inserted it directly. He thought to himself: Many families have been visited, but the Dumbledore family hasn't. Other families would feel envious. Besides, who's in the Dumbledore family, apart from the most famous white wizard of our time? Albus Dumbledore is the recipient of the First Order of Merlin, a great wizard, founder of the Order of the Phoenix, president of the International Federation of Magic, chief magician of the Wizengamot, and a pioneer in the fight against the first and second generation Dark Lords. What else does your Dumbledore family have? Cole made up his mind to insert the key and start rummaging. After all, they are real relatives. They have been a family for more than ten generations. How could they make mistakes with their own things?

Upon entering the vault, Cole couldn't help but feel disappointed. Compared to the previous vaults, there didn't seem to be much good stuff. It seems that when Dumbledore founded the Order of the Phoenix, he not only took the Black family's fortunes but also spent a lot of his own money. How can anyone in the wizarding world use their own money like that? But there were still good items, like the rare phoenix feathers. It was said that the Dumbledore family's patron is a phoenix, and only family members can gain its allegiance. The Holy Grail of the Pharaohs was there too. How did this treasure end up in England? Despite his kind-hearted nature, Dumbledore still had such things. Cole took what he could, leaving the rest.

Cole searched a bit more and found the invisibility cloak in a corner. Wasn't this from the Potter family? He knew Dumbledore would later give it to Harry, making Harry's several escapes possible. He decided against taking it, thinking kindly of Dumbledore. In the end, he left several thousand galleons as a pension for the old headmaster, not wanting to see him go without means in old age. Cole disarmed the magic trap and exited.

The next vault was the Weasley family's. The poverty of the Weasleys was well-known in the wizarding world, so Cole didn't expect much. You must know the Weasley family doesn't save, otherwise Ronald wouldn't be wearing his brother's old robe. Still, Cole continued.

Inside, instead of riches, the vault opened a new world for Cole. Not a trace of gold, no galleons, not even a magic potion, but plenty of bard miscellanies. Cole hadn't known the Weasleys were bard-like. In the middle of the room was a Muggle typewriter, a printing press with an inky smell. Even the Muggle world had steam engines, yet here this was. Arthur Weasley, if you favor Muggle items so much, don't store them as treasures. It's shameful seeing the wizarding world's treasures in tatters. Your Weasley ancestors would be furious. Others fill their vaults with gold galleons, but you add rubbish.

Cole smiled, left behind a gold galleon, and walked out. A thief either takes everything or leaves a mark. I, Cole Black, always play by the rules. Doing good deeds and accumulating virtue.
