Under Hermione's persistent questioning, David explained some fundamental tricks of performing magic—such as the precise gestures for wand movement when casting spells, how to control the output of magical energy, and the importance of proper pronunciation.
Neville occasionally chimed in with tidbits about the wizarding world, offering insights that were invaluable to both David and Hermione, who had only recently entered this mysterious realm.
Cassandra, on the other hand, remained silent, appearing to be engrossed in a book. However, the fact that she hadn't turned a single page in quite some time suggested that her attention was elsewhere.
As the conversation continued, the atmosphere in the compartment gradually lightened. When lunchtime arrived, everyone took out their food—some from home, others purchased from the trolley lady. Fortunately, none of them were short on money. Even Hermione had a few gold Galleons saved up.
Time passed quickly as they chatted, and soon the sky outside the window darkened.
Despite the excitement of heading to Hogwarts, sitting in a train carriage for an entire day was beginning to wear on David. He found himself growing restless, staring idly at the scenery outside.
"It sounds like there's an argument next door," he suddenly remarked, his ears perking up at the sound of raised voices.
A high-pitched scream soon followed.
"Correction—now they're fighting. Want to check it out?" David asked, his excitement evident.
"It's best not to get involved," Hermione said hesitantly. "We don't want to cause any trouble before even arriving at Hogwarts."
"What trouble?" David grinned, already standing up. "This is part of the fun!"
Without waiting for a response, he stepped out of the compartment. Cassandra followed without a word, while Hermione hesitated for a moment before sighing and trailing after them.
"I... I'll stay here," Neville murmured, remaining firmly in his seat. Years of experience had taught him that getting involved in conflicts rarely ended well for him.
A Scene of Chaos
When David reached the neighboring carriage, he saw five students inside, the tension palpable.
A burly boy was shrieking in pain, frantically shaking his hand to dislodge a rat that had latched onto his finger with sharp teeth.
Everyone else in the compartment turned to look as David and his companions entered.
"Who the hell are you? Get out!" a pale-faced boy with slick platinum-blond hair snapped, his voice laced with arrogance.
David recognized him immediately.
Draco Malfoy.
It was clear he didn't want anyone witnessing his humiliation.
Before David could reply, Draco's gaze landed on Cassandra, and his expression shifted.
"Vore, I wasn't talking about you," he quickly corrected. "I meant them."
David raised an eyebrow.
Cassandra, meanwhile, folded her arms and smirked. "Draco Malfoy—no matter where you go, you always manage to cause trouble."
Draco's face turned red with anger, but he bit back his retort. He knew better than to challenge Cassandra.
Though her family wasn't one of the Sacred Twenty-Eight, they were still a well-respected pure-blood lineage. More importantly, Cassandra had bested him in every confrontation they'd had—both physical and magical.
At a pure-blood gathering earlier that summer, Draco had attempted to regain his dignity using the magic he had just learned. Instead, he had been humiliated even worse than before.
The memory of his most recent defeat still stung.
Before Draco could stew in his embarrassment any further, another voice broke the silence.
"David! You're going to Hogwarts too?"
David turned toward the speaker and found himself face-to-face with a familiar boy—Harry Potter.
Despite not having been particularly close in the past, David had been Harry's classmate in primary school for two years. During that time, his presence had ensured that Dudley Dursley and his gang didn't bully Harry in the classroom.
Harry, now standing with a red-haired boy, seemed genuinely happy to see him.
"Yeah," David replied casually. "I'm a first-year too. And who's this?"
"This is Ronald Weasley," Harry introduced his new friend. "He's from a wizarding family."
Before the conversation could continue, Draco scoffed loudly, his earlier embarrassment fueling his anger.
"Enough! A mudblood from a Muggle family? Crabbe, teach him a lesson!"
David Strikes Back
Draco had been humiliated twice in one day—first by Cassandra, now ignored by Harry. His frustration boiled over, and he lashed out the only way he knew how.
But before Crabbe could take a single step forward—
BANG!
Crabbe staggered backward as David's fist connected with his jaw, sending the large boy sprawling onto the floor.
"Ahh!"
Draco yelped in surprise as David swiftly yanked Crabbe's wand from his grasp. Without hesitation, he pointed it at Draco and Goyle.
"Petrificus Totalus!"
The two froze instantly.
Draco's eyes widened in shock.
His father had always told him that wands were attuned to their owners and that others couldn't cast magic with them.
But David had just done exactly that.
"You should be grateful that this is the Hogwarts Express," David murmured, stepping closer to Draco and patting his cheek mockingly. "Otherwise, this would've gone very differently."
He then turned to Harry and Ron.
"They were causing trouble for you, right? They're all yours now."
Harry's green eyes lit up with amusement.
Ron, on the other hand, could barely contain his excitement.
"Oh, leave them to us," Ron said, cracking his knuckles. "We'll make sure they're properly welcomed to Hogwarts."
Grinning, he nudged Harry. "You still remember all those tricks from primary school, right?"
Harry smirked. "Of course."
The two boys got to work, dealing out revenge for Draco's earlier insults.
Approaching Hogwarts
As the train neared its destination, an announcement echoed through the compartments:
"The train will arrive at Hogwarts in five minutes. Please leave your luggage on the train, and it will be taken to the school for you."
David took this as his cue to release Draco, Crabbe, and Goyle from the Petrificus Totalus spell.
Before leaving, he slipped Crabbe's wand back into his pocket. After all, the wand itself wasn't at fault.
Once freed, the Malfoy trio scrambled out of the compartment without a word, their faces burning with humiliation.
David, Cassandra, and Hermione exchanged a few more words with Harry and Ron before heading back to their own carriage to change into their wizard robes.
On the way back, Hermione fretted anxiously.
"We shouldn't have done that," she muttered. "We're not even at Hogwarts yet, and we've already caused trouble!"
David rolled his eyes. "Relax, Hermione. It's not like we started the fight."
Cassandra, who had been silent for most of the return trip, finally spoke up.
"You were fast," she admitted, her sharp eyes studying David carefully.
She wasn't impressed by his ability to beat up Crabbe—anyone with half a brain could manage that.
No, what intrigued her was his ability to perform the Petrificus Totalus spell so efficiently using someone else's wand.
That required a high level of magical control.
It seemed David Adrian was far more interesting than she had originally thought.
