Chapter 23: Chapter 22: A Goddess’ Trick
The door creaked open.
Kenji, lying in bed, blinked.
At the doorway stood Hestia, hugging a pillow, dressed in loose pajamas.
Her blue eyes shimmered in the dim light.
"…Hestia?"
Kenji sat up, confused.
The petite goddess hesitated, then softly said—
"It's… thundering outside."
Her voice was small. Almost timid.
Kenji glanced toward the window.
Outside, rain poured.
Lightning flashed, illuminating the sky.
Thunder rumbled in the distance.
Kenji raised an eyebrow.
"You're afraid of thunder?"
A goddess, afraid of weather?
Hestia nodded quickly, gripping her pillow tighter.
"…I see."
Kenji sighed, shaking his head.
"Fine. Just—don't do anything weird, alright?"
The moment he agreed—
Hestia's expression brightened instantly.
"Ah, I knew you were the best, Kenji!"
She practically skipped into the room, shutting the door behind her.
Jumping onto the bed, she quickly snuggled up beside him, her body warm and soft.
Kenji, still unconvinced, glanced at her.
For someone scared of thunder, she looked way too happy.
Did she… plan this?
A flicker of mischief danced in her eyes.
Kenji sighed again.
"…This goddess is dangerous."
He reached over, turned off the lamp, and closed his eyes.
---
In the darkness—
A faint presence stirred.
Hidden in the shadows of the room.
A figure watched.
A pair of deep violet eyes gleamed with resentment.
Medusa.
Invisible.
Her arms crossed, expression unreadable.
---
When dawn broke, Kenji stirred.
Something heavy was on his chest.
And—
His body was restrained.
"…What the—?"
His arms were pinned, wrapped by soft limbs.
His torso was pressed against warmth.
Slowly, Kenji opened his eyes.
And froze.
Hestia was clinging to him.
Like a koala wrapped around a tree.
Her small hands were curled around his shoulders.
Her legs were locked around his waist.
Her face, peaceful, nuzzled into his neck.
Kenji felt a sweat drop slide down his temple.
"…This is bad."
A very dangerous warmth spread through him.
His eyes darted to her sleeping expression.
Soft breaths.
Rosy cheeks.
Her pajamas… slightly loose.
Kenji gulped.
"Control yourself… Control yourself…"
Taking a deep breath, he carefully lifted her arm.
Then her leg.
With painstaking effort, he untangled himself and slipped out of bed.
After covering Hestia with the blanket, Kenji hurriedly left the room.
If he stayed any longer—
…He wasn't sure he'd hold back.
---
By the time Kenji reached the city wall, the sky had barely turned blue.
A lone figure stood waiting.
Ais Wallenstein.
She was already here.
Before him.
Kenji blinked.
"…You're early."
Ais nodded silently.
Her golden eyes locked onto him—focused. Determined.
Kenji smiled.
He understood that feeling.
The hunger for strength.
"…Let's begin."
---
Kenji stood before Ais, arms crossed.
"Strengthening Magic is different from normal spells."
Ais listened intently, her sword gripped tightly.
Kenji continued—
"This technique strengthens both the body and weapons by flowing magic through them."
"The stronger the user's body, the greater the effect."
"But—"
He met her gaze.
"If you push beyond your limit… you'll break."
Ais nodded once, absorbing his words.
Then—
She closed her eyes and concentrated.
Kenji watched as golden light flickered around her sword.
Her control was rough—but the potential was undeniable.
Two hours passed.
By the end, Ais had barely managed to reinforce her blade.
She was exhausted, but—
Her eyes burned with determination.
Kenji smirked.
"…You'll get it soon."
---
Ais suddenly lowered herself to the ground.
Then—
She motioned for Kenji to come closer.
Kenji blinked.
"…What?"
Without a word, Ais gently pulled him down—
And rested his head on her lap.
A lap pillow.
Kenji's eyes widened.
"…Ais?"
Ais' expression remained neutral, her fingers idly running through his hair.
"This is… thanks."
Kenji's brain stopped working.
"…What?"
"Tiona and Tione said this is the best way to thank you."
"…And you believed them?"
Ais nodded.
Kenji's lips twitched.
"…I need to thank those two later."
Still—
A soft breeze blew across the city wall.
Ais' fingers gently brushed through his hair.
Kenji closed his eyes.
For a moment—
Just for a moment—
He let himself relax.
---
After ten minutes, Kenji stood up.
"…That was dangerous."
Ais tilted her head.
Kenji cleared his throat.
"…I have to go."
He turned, heading toward the Dungeon entrance.
Ais simply watched him go.
Her fingers, where Kenji's hair had been, lingered in the air.
Her golden eyes shimmered.
"…Strength."
She clenched her fist.
And made a silent vow.
---
Kenji quickened his pace, heading toward the Labyrinth City's core.
As he walked, he murmured to himself.
"The only path forward… is getting stronger."
His eyes burned with resolve.
With each step—
His legend continued to grow.
And deep within the Dungeon—
Something was waiting for him.
