Chapter 46: Chapter 46: A Frosty Christmas

Christmas snowflakes drifted and danced outside the window. Snape, holding two hooded cloaks, slowly walked out of the Great Hall with Pandora, heading for the fourth floor.

"Aha!" A sharp, piercing shriek echoed from above, startling both of them. They hadn't noticed, but they had just walked right beneath Peeves. The poltergeist was hanging upside down from an ornate chandelier, grinning maliciously at them.

"Are you quite sure you want to speak?" Snape pulled out his wand, looking menacingly at Peeves, who was suspended in mid-air.

"Silly baby and mad girl sneak away from the crowd—" Peeves shrieked at the top of his lungs.

But before he could finish his rhyme, Snape, with swift precision, pointed his wand at Peeves. Peeves immediately clutched desperately at his throat, gagging, his face contorted in terror. He flew out of the window, making lewd gestures at Snape and Pandora, but not a single sound escaped his lips, for his tongue was stuck fast to the roof of his mouth.

Freed from Peeves, Snape and Pandora continued their walk, soon arriving at the statue of the humpbacked, one-eyed witch on the fourth floor.

"Hogsmeade," Snape whispered, leaning close to Pandora's ear. "There's a secret passage here that leads directly to the Honeydukes' cellar. The entrance is in the old witch's hump. Since everyone's busy with their own things today, would you like to go to Hogsmeade for Christmas?"

Pandora, clearly not one for following rules, immediately lit up at Snape's words. She instinctively touched her robes, then nodded cheerfully. Seeing Pandora agree, Snape quickly glanced around, then drew his wand and tapped the statue gently, murmuring, "Dissendium!"

Instantly, the statue's hump opened, revealing a hole just wide enough for a slender person to squeeze through.

"You go first." Snape quickly scanned both sides of the corridor, then followed Pandora, diving headfirst into the opening.

They seemed to slide for a long time down a stone slide, wind whistling past their ears, before landing with a squelch on cold, damp earth. Snape quickly got to his feet, brushing off the mud as he raised his wand and muttered, "Lumos!"

Only then could they see clearly: they were in a narrow, low, earthy tunnel.

"Follow me." Snape led Pandora forward. The passage twisted and turned, more like a giant rabbit hole. Snape held his wand out front, its faint light flickering in the darkness. The ground was uneven, and he occasionally stumbled over rough patches.

Time slowly passed in the darkness; it felt like an hour before the passage finally began to incline upwards. After another ten minutes or so, they reached the bottom of a worn stone staircase, which stretched upwards out of sight.

"Come on," Snape whispered to Pandora. They began to climb the stone stairs, carefully trying not to make any noise. One step, two steps... They counted at first, a hundred steps, two hundred steps... but soon lost count.

Suddenly, Snape's head hit something hard with a 'thud.' It was a trapdoor. Snape stood there, rubbing his head, and carefully listened for sounds from above. After a long moment, hearing nothing, he slowly pushed open the trapdoor and cautiously peered through the opening.

"Nobody. Let's go up; they must all be celebrating," Snape whispered. This was a cellar, filled with crates and other wooden boxes. Snape clambered up first, using both his hands and feet, and once steady, he leaned down and pulled Pandora up. Then, he gently closed the trapdoor. It was almost the same color as the dusty floor, making the entrance practically invisible unless one looked very closely.

"Put this on," Snape said, taking one of the cloaks he held and handing it to Pandora. "We should be careful outside."

With their hoods up, the two slowly climbed the wooden stairs leading to the upper floor. They reached the door at the top of the stairs and slipped quietly through, finding themselves behind the counter of Honeydukes. The shop was empty, and the lights were off.

Snape and Pandora moved as silently as possible, walking past the counter— "Alohomora." After magically opening the shop door, they quickly slipped outside.

The street was similarly quiet, with only a pub near the station showing lights, from which occasional cheerful sounds broke the night's stillness.

"Come on, this weather calls for a Butterbeer," Snape said, turning to Pandora. The two of them pulled their cloaks tighter and walked towards the Three Broomsticks. The wind was bitter, and their hands were nearly numb with cold. Finally, they crossed the road and, a few minutes later, burst into the pub, bringing a swirl of wind and snow with them.

In the center of the pub stood a beautiful Christmas tree, adorned with all sorts of colorful lights and decorations. The pub was exceptionally crowded tonight; the usual tables had been cleared away. Everyone was wandering around, mugs in hand, toasting each other.

Snape struggled to push his way to the bar, and, putting on a deliberately high-pitched voice, he said to Madam Rosmerta, "Two Butterbeers, please." Madam Rosmerta turned, looked at him quizzically for a moment, then smiled sweetly and handed him two large, frothy, hot Butterbeers. As Snape took the mugs, he felt Madam Rosmerta lightly scratch his hand with her little finger. He felt a sudden pang of guilt and secretly peeked at her from under his hood. But she had already turned away, busy preparing drinks for other customers, leaving him only the long ponytail tied behind her back. It was the first time Snape had seen Madam Rosmerta wear her hair like that.

"Like it?" Snape asked Pandora, who was gulping down her Butterbeer. He had to raise his voice because loud Christmas carols were playing on the pub's radio. Celestina Warbeck's voice flowed melodiously from the large wooden radio.

"It's wonderful!" Pandora exclaimed cheerfully, raising her mug. "Merry Christmas!"

Snape took a long drink. It was one of the most delightful things he had ever tasted, a rich, sweet flavor that spread instantly through his mouth, seemingly warming every inch of his body. Under the cover of a particularly jazzy tune, "A Cauldron Full of Hot, Strong Love," Snape and Pandora chatted loudly, clinking their mugs together with a resounding clang.

"Oh, come and stir my cauldron,

If you do it right,

I'll brew you up some hot, strong love,

To keep you warm tonight."

They soon finished their first Butterbeer. Then came the second, the third, the fourth... Snape couldn't even remember how many times he went to the bar. He had even started to grin foolishly at Madam Rosmerta. When he handed a mug to Pandora again, she looked a little tipsy too.

"Severus, I have something for you," Pandora's voice was slightly wobbly from the alcohol.

"Oh, what wonderful thing?" Snape swayed slightly to the music.

"This," Pandora said, squinting her eyes as she pulled out a men's wallet from her robes. "It can hold a lot."

At this moment, Celestina had begun to sing "You Stole My Heart Away with Magic."

"Oh, my poor heart, where has it gone?

It left me, by magic drawn away,

...

And now you've torn it all apart,

Please give my heart back to me!"

Celestina ended her performance with a long, high note, and loud applause erupted from the radio. Pandora, too, clapped excitedly.
