Chapter 6: Magic pouch toad Al!
After expressing his gratitude to Mr. Ollivander,
Devero stepped out of the wand shop and dashed off in the direction Snape had gone,
his quick steps echoing against the cobblestone street.
Along the way, a few passersby, who had witnessed his impressive display of magic in the shop,
gave him curious, admiring glances.
Some even approached him, extending their hands for a friendly introduction,
eager to acquaint themselves with this remarkable young wizard.
Devero, however, offered polite smiles and gently declined their overtures.
Right now, his top priority was to find Professor Snape.
The last thing he wanted was to be truly abandoned here.
As the thought crossed his mind,
he quickened his pace, silently praying that Snape hadn't ventured too far.
Still, the situation presented an excellent opportunity to boost his exploration progress of Diagon Alley.
Earlier, under Snape's watchful gaze,
he had been too hesitant to wander freely into certain shops.
But now, with the professor out of sight, the chance was too good to pass up.
Running in and out of several shops in quick succession,
Devero finally paused to check his system progress:
[Wizarding Secret Realm—Diagon Alley Exploration Progress: 39.8%]
Devero couldn't help but let a satisfied smile curve his lips.
Not bad. The progress was coming along nicely.
"What in Merlin's name do you think you're doing? Running around like a toddler?"
Devero froze at the sound of a sharp, familiar voice.
It was Professor Snape, his tone laced with that distinctive blend of irritation and authority.
Snape stood a short distance away,
holding a cylindrical object wrapped in black cloth and the same box he had previously entrusted to Devero.
"Apologies, Professor,"
Devero replied, slightly out of breath.
"I couldn't find you earlier."
He was painfully aware of his poor physical fitness;
a mere dash through a few shops had left him winded.
Snape let out a derisive snort,
saying nothing as he shoved the box back into Devero's hands.
Fortunately, the levitation charm was still active.
Without it, the box's weight would surely have sent him toppling over.
"I've heard rumors that you performed magic in Ollivander's shop,"
Snape said, narrowing his dark, piercing eyes as he fixed Devero with an unrelenting stare.
Devero laughed nervously,
hoping to conceal his unease.
"Ah, well, I just copied what some other wizards were doing earlier—said the incantation, gave it a try, and... it worked! Haha..."
Of course, Devero's flimsy explanation didn't stand a chance against Snape's discerning eyes.
But what could he say?
That he was a magical prodigy who could pick up spells simply by watching others cast them?
That would sound utterly absurd.
No one would believe such a claim.
Snape, however, merely gave Devero a long, calculating look,
his expression inscrutable,
before deciding not to press the matter further.
Without another word, he handed the black-cloth-wrapped cylindrical object to Devero.
"This is something your parents left for you."
"What?"
Devero blinked in astonishment as he took the item.
His parents?
In the entire year since he had arrived in this world,
Snape had never once mentioned them.
Now, completely out of the blue, he was being given something they had left behind.
Devero's heart raced with anticipation as he quickly removed the black cloth.
But what lay beneath left him utterly stunned.
It was... a toad.
A toad!?
Devero stared at it in disbelief.
Really? His parents' legacy to him was... a toad?
His lips twitched in an awkward grimace.
His parents in this world seemed to have rather peculiar tastes.
"This is no ordinary toad,"
Snape said, his tone faintly tinged with disdain.
"Technically speaking, it's a magical creature."
"A Storage Toad. Its stomach functions as a space enchanted with an Undetectable Extension Charm,"
Snape explained, his voice clipped and impatient.
"It can store a significant number of items. Of course, if you don't mind the mess.
As the toad ages, the internal space expands.
This one is about forty years old, and its internal storage space is roughly forty square meters."
Hearing this, Devero's earlier distaste vanished in an instant.
His eyes lit up with curiosity and excitement.
A portable storage space? How cool was that?!
Eagerly, he took the toad out of its cage and examined it carefully.
The toad was noticeably larger than a typical one,
roughly the size of four of Devero's palms.
Even holding it up required some effort.
Its plump, rounded body exuded an air of stability.
Its skin was a deep green,
speckled with mottled brown spots.
Tiny, wart-like bumps covered its surface, giving it a rough, almost ancient texture.
To Devero's surprise, the toad was astonishingly lethargic.
Even when he gently shook it,
it barely reacted,
as if too lazy to care.
Snape, meanwhile, had quietly taken several steps back,
clearly keeping his distance from the creature.
"Professor Snape, how do I get it to store things?"
Devero asked, turning the toad over in his hands,
but he couldn't figure out how to activate its storage ability.
When he looked back at Snape,
he noticed that the professor had retreated about ten steps away.
Snape sighed—just barely audibly—and reluctantly stepped forward.
With a grimace,
he raised his wand and tapped the bump on the toad's back.
Immediately, the toad's mouth opened wide—so wide it could have swallowed Devero's entire head.
"That's how you use it,"
Snape said tersely, quickly stepping back again.
"To close it, just repeat the process."
"Thank you, Professor Snape!"
Devero didn't waste a second.
He eagerly stuffed all of his recent purchases—books, robes, cauldrons—into the toad's gaping mouth.
To his amazement,
when an object seemed too large to fit,
the toad's mouth would stretch even wider,
accommodating items that seemed impossible to store.
Devero briefly entertained the idea of trying to fit the entire box into the toad,
but Snape stopped him with a look of such horror,
it was as if Devero had proposed feeding the toad live dragons.
And so, Devero gained his first magical pet:
a Storage Toad.
He decided to name it Al.
After all, at forty years old,
the toad was practically a senior citizen among its kind.
With all his shopping done,
it was finally time to head back to Snape's residence.
But to Devero's surprise,
Snape had arranged for him to stay at the Leaky Cauldron again.
Without so much as a proper explanation,
the professor Apparated away, leaving Devero behind.
[Ding!]
[New Spell Added to Repository!]
Oh, sweet! Apparition was now part of his spell list!
Though he couldn't use it just yet,
having it early was definitely a win.
Devero couldn't help but wonder why Snape hadn't taken him home.
Perhaps the professor truly did hate toads.
Then again,
Al was undeniably one of the laziest creatures Devero had ever encountered.
Still, Snape dealt with toads as potion ingredients all the time, didn't he?
Maybe he only tolerated the dead ones.
Or maybe there was something Snape needed to do—something he didn't want Devero involved in.
After all, it had been a week since Snape first left Devero at the Leaky Cauldron.
Whatever the case,
Devero didn't mind staying here.
More importantly,
he now had his own wand!
This meant he could explore Diagon Alley freely.
At present, his exploration progress stood at 40%.
Devero was determined to push it to 60% or higher!
