Chapter 68: Chapter 69: Setsu: Slipped Away
The conditions Sarutobi Hiruzen presented were indeed enticing. However, Setsu, despite her age, felt an increasing sense of unease. Years of wandering, coupled with the wisdom her mother imparted, made her far more perceptive than most of her peers.
She knew all too well—there is no such thing as a free lunch. If Sarutobi Hiruzen offered her such favorable terms, it must come with a hidden agenda. But what could that be? Setsu couldn't figure it out entirely, though a nagging suspicion crept into her mind.
Her mother's warnings resonated clearly in her thoughts: "Never reveal your heritage unless you trust someone with your life. Our clan's name is both a blessing and a curse."
Now, Hiruzen not only knew her Uzumaki lineage but was offering her the opportunity to stay in Konoha with numerous benefits. What was his ultimate goal? Setsu could only speculate that he might use her as a means to revive the Uzumaki clan in Konoha—a mere reproductive tool to sustain their bloodline.
As these thoughts overwhelmed her, she panicked. Setsu quickly rose from her seat, intending to leave immediately, but the Anbu standing by the door barred her way.
"Let me go! I want to leave!" Setsu screamed, her voice quivering with desperation.
She pushed past the Anbu, fleeing in terror.
The masked shinobi moved to intercept her, but Sarutobi Hiruzen raised a hand, signaling them to stand down. "Let her go," he said calmly.

Meanwhile, Naruto had not anticipated that Setsu, who once seemed hesitant to leave, would depart without warning.
Confused but not overly concerned, Naruto reasoned that Setsu should be safe, given the timeline of events from the original storyline. As such, he decided not to dwell on her sudden disappearance. After all, learning Uzumaki techniques could wait a little longer.
With the third Chūnin Exam approaching, Naruto returned to the Forest of Death, now reduced to ruins, to carry out a critical task. Using the same sealing technique as before, he released the Nine-Tails stored within his backpack, fully prepared to absorb it into himself.
---
Inside the sealed space, chaos erupted as the Nine-Tails appeared.
The creature roared, its voice laced with anger and confusion. "Who are you? And why am I here?"
Kurama, Naruto's original Nine-Tails, watched the scene unfold with amusement.
The newly sealed Nine-Tails growled, "One moment, I was battling that giant blond ghost, and the next, I'm stuck in this place with a tiny blond ghost? I'll kill you!"
Naruto, unfazed by the creature's fury, merely observed it silently.
Kurama chuckled. "Naruto, aren't you going to leave?"
"I'm curious about how you're absorbing the chakra," Naruto replied, his gaze fixed on Kurama with intrigue.
The original Kurama smirked mischievously. "Well, let's just say it's a trade secret."
Naruto sighed, suppressing his curiosity for now.
Hours later, he revisited the sealed space. By this time, the newly sealed Nine-Tails had shrunk to a mere thirty centimeters tall. The once-mighty beast now sat on the ground, disheveled and dejected, muttering to itself: "You two are monsters... absolute monsters!"
In contrast, Kurama's own chakra reserves had multiplied exponentially, making him significantly more powerful.
Seeing Naruto, Kurama perked up. "Naruto, I have something important to tell you."
---
Curious, Naruto asked, "What is it, Kurama?"
"You're aware that the chakra of tailed beasts carries a dark and violent nature, right?" Kurama said, extending a portion of its scarlet chakra for demonstration.
Naruto nodded, sensing the malevolent energy radiating from the chakra.
Kurama continued, "If a Jinchūriki wishes to fully harness the power of their tailed beast, they must strengthen their mind and heart to resist the chakra's side effects. Even we, the tailed beasts, cannot neutralize this effect for you."
Naruto listened intently as Kurama explained, "To truly control my chakra, you must confront your true self and develop immunity to the evil thoughts embedded within. This requires understanding your inner heart and accepting your deepest truths."
Naruto recalled a pivotal moment from the original story—the Waterfall of Truth.
Kurama seemed to sense his thoughts. "Yes, there is only one place where you can uncover your true heart—the Waterfall of Truth. Until you achieve this, I cannot freely give you my full power without risking your sanity."
Naruto, impressed by Kurama's initiative to share such critical training details, couldn't help but smirk. "That's great and all, but why don't we try skipping ahead? Let me take in your chakra now."
Kurama narrowed his eyes. "Are you serious? Do you understand the consequences of failure?"
Naruto nodded confidently. "If I fail, I'll be consumed by your chakra. But I won't fail."
Kurama laughed heartily. "Alright then, kid. Let's see what you've got!"
The beast began transferring its chakra to Naruto, the red energy swirling around him in a volatile dance.
"Here we go," Kurama warned as it disconnected its control.
Instantly, the unrestrained chakra began to overwhelm Naruto, assaulting his mind with a flood of dark memories and malevolent thoughts. Every hardship and sorrow he'd endured in his life resurfaced, amplified by the tailed beast's malevolent influence.
Yet, Naruto remained calm, his breathing steady and his expression serene. He weathered the storm of negative emotions without faltering.
Within minutes, the chaotic red chakra began to stabilize, turning golden as it fused harmoniously with Naruto's own energy.
When the process was complete, Naruto stood bathed in a radiant golden aura—the Nine-Tails Chakra Mode.
Kurama observed with pride. "Impressive, Naruto. You've exceeded my expectations."
Naruto examined his glowing hands, a smile forming on his face. "I guess I passed your test, huh?"
Kurama nodded. "You're one step closer to mastering my full power. But remember, this is just the beginning."
Naruto chuckled. "I'm ready for whatever comes next."
Kurama smirked. "Good. Because things are about to get a lot more challenging."
With that, Naruto exited the sealed space, more determined than ever to continue his journey of growth and self-discovery.
---
Meanwhile, Setsu wandered aimlessly, her mind a whirlwind of uncertainty and fear. She couldn't shake the feeling that Sarutobi Hiruzen had ulterior motives, and she vowed to keep her distance from Konoha for the time being.
As their paths diverged, both Naruto and Setsu were unknowingly setting the stage for their fates to intertwine once again. The trials ahead would test their resolve and reshape their destinies in ways they could never have imagined.
