Chapter 52: Chapter 52: Xiao's Invitation
Uchiha Itachi stepped one foot into Logan's range.
He paused for a second.
Nothing happened.
He looked back at Konan and Deidara, who stood ten meters away, and signaled with his eyes that everything was under control.
But when he turned back—
A fist larger than his head was already flying toward him.
Bang!
Itachi's body burst into a murder of crows, scattering into the air before regrouping a few steps back.
"I knew it," he muttered, glaring at Star Platinum. "You had a backup plan."
Last time, Itachi had underestimated Logan. He hadn't activated his Sharingan or used ninjutsu. He was caught off guard and nearly overwhelmed by Logan's flurry of blows. On the surface, he'd brushed it off, acting indifferent. But secretly, he'd replayed the encounter over and over before sleep, wishing he could redo the night of the Uchiha massacre.
This time, he had prepared—he had mastered the Body Replacement Technique, waiting for the perfect moment.
But something felt off.
His eyes widened.
The three tomoe in his Sharingan spun rapidly, and realization dawned.
Candle-like fluid clung to his limbs, and where he expected to see Star Platinum, there was only a grinning white snake.
"You react fast," the white snake said mockingly.
Genjutsu?!
When did Logan learn to use illusions?
Itachi didn't have time to dwell. The white snake lunged, throwing a punch.
He raised his kunai to block, preparing for an earth-shattering hit—
But the impact was weaker than expected.
Not all Stands were as overwhelmingly powerful as Star Platinum. The white snake focused more on illusions than brute strength. Still, Logan wasn't finished.
Wind howled. Logan, wielding the Destruction Sword, was already in front of him!
Too fast!
There was no time to cast a jutsu, and genjutsu wouldn't work on Logan while the white snake was active.
With no other option, Itachi kicked the white snake aside and raised his kunai to block the two-meter-long blade.
CLANG!
The shockwave echoed across the battlefield. Spies watching from afar flinched at the sound.
Itachi held on for barely a second before his arm bent at an unnatural angle, and the impact sent him flying like a ragdoll.
Everyone watching was stunned.
Wasn't Itachi the one who had cast the illusion?
Why was he the one using Body Replacement and getting knocked away?
Only Itachi understood what had happened: both he and Logan had fallen into each other's illusions—and both had broken out almost instantly.
The difference? Logan had planned for this.
When the Akatsuki trio descended, Logan had indeed been caught in an illusion. But after breaking free using the white snake's power, he saw them clearly: three members of the Akatsuki, identified from intel provided by Kanhara Hayato.
Assuming they were all enemies of Orochimaru's caliber, Logan had faked still being under genjutsu, luring them in.
Only Itachi, ever confident, took the bait.
Logan anticipated that Itachi would use Body Replacement if Star Platinum attacked. So instead, he used the white snake's illusion to force Itachi into a miscalculated defense—and then went for the kill himself.
Itachi, now bruised and humiliated, stood beside Konan, his arm clearly injured.
Konan stepped forward. "Wait. We mean no harm."
Logan glanced at Itachi, then back at her. "You brought him here, attacked me without warning, and now you say you mean no harm?"
Konan hesitated.
He wasn't wrong. Their plan had been to subdue Logan and then offer their invitation under the guise of diplomacy.
Usually, even the most rebellious rogue ninjas became cooperative at this point.
But Logan had just killed Orochimaru and sent Itachi flying. His momentum was overwhelming.
"This is going to be difficult," Konan muttered under her breath.
She took a breath and explained their purpose.
Logan crossed his arms. "So, let me get this straight. You want me to join your criminal organization and let Orochimaru go?"
"…Yes."
"Why should I join Akatsuki?"
"Because of your ideals," Konan said, serious now. "You reject the current world order. You seek change. But your strength alone isn't enough to create that change. Join us, and you'll have the means to shape the future."
Logan raised a brow. "I don't even know what your ideals are."
He looked at Orochimaru's fallen body, then back at Itachi.
"If your group can take in people like him," Logan said flatly, "then our goals are clearly not the same."
Deidara cut in. "Come on, it's fun in Akatsuki! You can kill who you want, do what you want. Pure artistic freedom!"
Logan laughed.
BOOM!
Star Platinum appeared and smashed Orochimaru's skull with a single punch.
"You—" Konan gasped.
Without chakra to maintain his immortality, Orochimaru fell like a puppet with its strings cut.
"I'm already doing whatever I want and killing whoever I want," Logan said. "Why would I join you?"
The Akatsuki trio fell silent.
"…Logan…" Orochimaru rasped.
His mouth opened slowly, voice barely a whisper. "I… don't want to… die… Please… let me go…"
With both his discs removed by the white snake, Orochimaru was in a state of suspended animation—only briefly conscious due to an overwhelming obsession.
In the JoJo series, Jotaro had fought to the brink because of his daughter.
And now, Orochimaru—
He clung to life simply out of his obsession with survival.
Logan crouched beside him.
"Yeah… you don't want to die. But who does?"
He placed a hand gently on Orochimaru's shoulder.
"Relax. It's normal to feel dizzy. You're going to die—no one can save you today."
He leaned closer.
"You've got too many tricks. If I let you live, even with these discs, I wouldn't feel safe. You'd find some loophole, some new jutsu, and I'd regret it."
Logan held up the two discs, now slightly cracked, between his fingers.
"But don't worry. You wanted eternal life, didn't you? In a way, you got it. You'll live on… as a disc."
Orochimaru's hand twitched, reaching toward his discs one last time—but then dropped limply.
He was gone.
"Killed Orochimaru. Gained 600 soul fragments."
"…Only 600?" Logan blinked.
He quickly realized why. He had already defeated Orochimaru once, earning soul fragments back then. The system probably limited repeat farming.
If he could endlessly farm someone with regeneration, the balance would break.
It made sense.
Each person could only yield a fixed number of soul fragments in a given period. New fragments would only generate after significant personal growth.
Logan pocketed the discs.
The goal of this journey had been achieved. Orochimaru was dead.
He turned to face the three Akatsuki members.
"I've killed your man. I'm not joining your club. What now?"
Deidara and Itachi both looked at Konan.
She exhaled slowly and straightened her posture.
"Then we fight."
