Chapter 96: A Path to Survival
The bald man is sweating profusely, partly from the pain, and partly from fear.
What does it feel like to have a gun pointed at you?
Answer: It feels like the eyes of death are staring at you. That cold darkness makes your blood run cold.
"Friend, let's talk this through. Is there some kind of misunderstanding?" The kick that sent the desk flying just now shows that this guy isn't someone to be trifled with. He can't figure out the other person's background for the moment and decides to stall for time.
I've already pressed the alarm. Why aren't those useless idiots here yet?
The bald man curses inwardly.
"Ah!" A sudden cry of pain echoes as something pierces flesh—His other unharmed hand is now pinned to the armrest of the office chair. Blood flows down, staining his pants a gruesome crimson.
"I said, my patience is limited. I ask, you answer." Lin Wei doesn't care about what he's thinking. He straightens the ouroboros ornament he picked up and throws it like a dart, hitting the bullseye. The snake's head and tail pierce the man's flesh.
Lin Wei looks at him with a gentle expression and asks with a smile, "Answer my question. Where is that girl now?"
The gentle smile and calm tone are demonic in the man's eyes.
Actually, Lin Wei is in a bad mood right now, for several reasons.
The Thousand Fists Association left a terrible impression on him.
He checked every corner using the surveillance system, but couldn't find the girl. And with that man's delay, Lin Wei feels the urgency of breaking a promise.
And the ouroboros ornament and its meaning adds another layer of unease to his anxiety, making him feel irritable.
"Boss, we have a…"
"Bang!" The office door is pushed open. Before the man in pain can show any relief, the scrawny man who had just barged in falls to the ground with a gunshot, staining the expensive carpet crimson.
"It's very rude to barge in without even a greeting, don't you think?" Lin Wei puts away his still-smoking pistol, complaining as if he has forgotten that he was the one who barged in. "Don't even try to stall. No one is coming to save you. See for yourself."
Lin Wei snaps his fingers and points to the large monitor, which has now been knocked over.
The screen lights up, displaying the surveillance footage from every area within the Thousand Fists Association's base, like squares on a chessboard—but almost all of them are completely dark, except for the one displaying the boss's office.
"Heh, interesting. You actually have one of these things in your own base." Lin Wei sneers. He doesn't believe the boss would be this selfless. His secrets are probably hidden in a more hidden place.
"You… what are you planning to do?" The bald man glances at the screen, confused, but his anxiety rapidly increases.
"I have some bad news for you, Mr. President." Lin Wei says in a mocking tone, as if he's playing a game. "There seems to be a serious problem with your base's power and security systems. All rooms, corridors, and elevators have lost power, and all the security doors are also sealed shut. I'm afraid you won't be able to get out anytime soon."
"Damn it! What did you do!? Ugh..." The man roars angrily, like a lion protecting its territory. He jumps up, trying to attack Lin Wei.
But one of his hands is pinned to the armrest, and the other is broken and powerless.
His reckless move in this crazed state causes him to fall to the floor, tearing his wound further and increasing his blood loss, which flows down the metallic ouroboros, accumulating at the snake's tongue, before flowing back into its master.
"Don't get excited, my friend," Lin Wei says calmly, then suddenly remembers something, "Ah, right. I forgot to tell you. Without the power supply, this base's oxygen supply has also stopped, and some poisonous gases have started to leak… if you stay here too long, the consequences would be disastrous… This eleven-floor underground facility would make a nice tomb, don't you think?"
Lin Wei calmly describes the horror he's caused, then looks at the pale-faced boss with a gentle expression, his threat obvious.
"What… have you done?" The man is starting to show signs of blood loss, but refuses to yield. He stares at Lin Wei.
"Letting scum return to the earth. Isn't that a form of mercy? What do you think, Mr. Human Trafficker?" Lin Wei isn't offended, snapping his fingers instead.
"Snap!"
The crisp snap echoes.
The lights in the room turn off, and the only light on the screen turns dark.
After a few seconds, another snap echoes, and the lights turn back on again. It illuminates the despair on the man's face, "You will… regret this!"
"Yes, very likely." Lin Wei nods, taking the threat seriously. He smiles at him, "But you won't see it."
"You!" The man's resolve is broken by Lin Wei's mockery. He lowers his head in despair and begs, "...Sir, please have mercy…"
"Heh." Lin Wei looks down at him, carefully studying him for a moment, until the man starts to feel uneasy. He then sneers. "So you're afraid of death after all."
Just as I expected. Lin Wei thinks.
The moment he entered the office and saw the ouroboros ornament, he instantly realized something—The Thousand Fists Association is also one of World Serpent's peripheral organizations.
World Serpent has a lot of affiliated institutions. Important ones such as the Mikoyan Design Bureau are part of the organization's important assets; less important ones such as the director of the British Museum are expendable pawns.
Pawns like these "members" were often eliminated due to various "accidents" when World Serpent transitioned from operating in the shadows to operating in public.
It's self-evident that the Thousand Fists Association also belongs to that level.
But the complete destruction of such an organization from top to bottom is very rare.
World Serpent only uses such cruel methods when dealing with those they consider traitors,
For example, Cocolia at the Eye in the deep, her entire family was almost wiped out before her eyes.
The leader of the Thousand Fists Association probably isn't a fanatic of World Serpent, and is probably more of an opportunist.
With that thought in mind, Lin Wei uses a gradual, escalating pressure tactic to see if he can get the information he wants.
"Tell me, where is the girl you tricked into coming here from Shenzhou?" Lin Wei is really getting impatient now, Honkai survivors, a large number of disappearances, and World Serpent...
Putting these clues together, it's easy to guess where they were sent and how they will be treated!
Project Stigma, bioweapons, experimental subjects…
Even just imagining it made him shudder.
In the eyes of the true rulers of this world, lives are simply expendable resources, the currency to achieve victory.
The three idealistic leaders of Anti-Entropy are the only exceptions.
Lin Wei had been avoiding the darkness and evil of the inner world because he knows that he probably wouldn't be able to control himself. And he chose to pretend not to know about those things, for the sake of the "bigger picture."
By looking away, he could act dumb, and those things would remain as just background settings of the story in his memories. All he has to do is to focus on the small stage on the very top that's illuminated by the spotlight.
But now, they used a desperate father and put those things that he had long ignored before him, naked and bloodstained…
Lin Wei feels like a clown, a fool,
He is enraged, calmly and surprisingly realizing how violent he is deep down, how intense his desire to kill and destroy!
Lin Wei suppresses his anger so it doesn't affect his reasoning and judgment.
He really wants to know, if he slaughters everyone here, what would Grey Serpent, and even the entire World Serpent do?
Lin Wei sneers. This is self-defense. If World Serpent uses this as an excuse to target him, he can act without any scruples.
As long as he doesn't provoke Kevin, he can relax a bit.
"Ha... ha... hahaha..." The bald man looks up at Lin Wei, feeling emboldened. He laughs weakly, "So, you're here to save someone? Unfortunately, the person you're looking for isn't here… I can tell you where she is, but on one condition…"
The bald man wants to bargain, but Lin Wei isn't interested in such things. He snaps his fingers, and a section of the monitor lights up. Then the footage is filled with chaos.
"Oh dear, how terrible. A gas leak on the eleventh floor, with an electrical malfunction causing a fire. How unfortunate… tsk tsk tsk… these isolation doors are good. Otherwise, if it spread to other floors… such a loss, isn't it?"
Lin Wei shakes his head, sighing sadly, then laughs.
"It's true that I'm here to save someone, but that doesn't mean I'll yield to your threats. After all, if I avenge her here, I'll at least be able to give her poor father a sense of closure, wouldn't I?"
Lin Wei dislikes being bargained with, so he directly shuts him down.
"Drop those useless thoughts and tell me everything you know. I can let you live. Otherwise, I'll take your life as compensation…"
"I've already said that my patience is very limited. Live or die, your choice."
...
"Come in!" Half an hour later, the scruffy man, who's been led here by Lin Wei's voice on the intercom, stands nervously at the door. He hesitates for a moment and knocks lightly.
Hearing the familiar voice from within, he relaxes. His heart is racing as he tries to adjust his messy clothing and puts on a smile before opening the door and walking in.
"Mr. Lin Wei... where's my daughter?" The scruffy man sees that Lin Wei is standing in front of a large desk, frowning at a large screen, lost in thought. He quickly looks around the room.
He only sees the bald man, his arm pinned to the armrest, lying on the floor, not knowing whether he's alive or dead. His daughter isn't there.
"Well, there have been some changes. Your daughter isn't here. She was sent somewhere else." Lin Wei looks at the man, whose expression is crumbling and comforts him.
"Don't worry, there's still a way. Right, I have something I need you to do."
"Just say it, sir!" The man forces himself to focus, trying his best to do what Lin Wei asks, knowing that his last sliver of hope rests with him.
Lin Wei nods, takes out a pistol, turns off the safety, and throws it to the man, who frantically catches it, horrified.
"You said… you'll let me live! You despicable…" The defeated man curses hoarsely. His voice is weak.
"I keep my word. If I say I'll let you live, then I'll let you live." Lin Wei, who has successfully copied all of the data from the Thousand Fists Association, walks over to them, and points at the confused man. He smiles.
"Don't worry, I believe in being fair. Look, you're the leader of the Thousand Fists Association, the one who hurt his daughter, and he is the victim, a truly powerless man. As long as you can defeat him, I'll let you live."
Lin Wei nods, satisfied, "How's that? Fair enough?"
......
After leaving the Thousand Fists Association's "building," the man basks in the warm sunlight, relaxing before vomiting.
He had watched his enemy's despairing eyes turn dull, dying with resentment. The brief sense of satisfaction is replaced by Endless fear and confusion—
I killed someone…
He feels sadness and confusion in his heart.
Lin Wei pats him on the shoulder in comfort, "We're in a hurry. I have to go somewhere else. It might be dangerous, so I won't take you with me. Find somewhere safe to stay. I've already returned your money. Do you need any other help?"
The man shakes his head weakly, full of gratitude and fear.
"Then go. I still have something to do. Wait for me near that restaurant from before. I'll bring your daughter to you there." Lin Wei turns and glances back.
The man is relieved. He flees.
The sunlight feels so nice…
Lin Wei basks in the sun, thinking.
The streets behind him are bustling, full of vibrant life. It's one of the busiest areas in Singapore.
Below his feet is the base of an evil organization. It's now dead silent, like hell.
Lin Wei didn't do anything. He only opened the gas valve, so everyone would die in pain and despair.
What a wonderful tomb, Lin Wei thinks.
"…"
"...Ugh… vomit!" No matter how much mental preparation he does, he can't help but vomit until he has nothing left.
"I've killed someone… I've killed a lot of people…"
Lin Wei's eyes are full of tears, and he looks horrible. He doesn't even know if he is really crying or just vomiting.
Yae Sakura is silent. She had killed countless people and understands what he's feeling.
After a long time, Lin Wei stands up, his legs still weak. He hails a taxi and leaves.
Lin Wei doesn't go anywhere else but heads home.
Back in his house, he immediately rushes into the bathroom, and turns on the shower. He keeps scrubbing himself for a long time before leaving, exhausted. He returns to his room to sleep.
He didn't wake up until midnight.
After washing up, Lin Wei sits by the computer and starts playing his game.
He is ecstatic and quickly sends a message, "Bronya, I need your help!"
