Chapter 215: Story 215: The Shattered Oasis

Damien Rook and Lena stumbled into what was once a place of peace—the Oasis, a hidden haven nestled deep in the wasteland. Its towering palm trees and flowing waters had made it a sanctuary for survivors, but now it was a graveyard. The once-vibrant greenery had withered, and the crystal-clear water was now stained with blood.

"This place was supposed to be safe," Lena whispered, surveying the devastation. Bodies were strewn across the ground, most torn apart by the undead. The air reeked of death and betrayal.

Damien's eyes narrowed as he knelt beside a body, examining the claw marks on the man's chest. "This wasn't just a random attack. These people didn't stand a chance."

The Oasis had been taken by surprise, but the level of destruction was far too coordinated. Something—or someone—had set this up.

"I don't like this," Damien muttered, rising to his feet. His hand hovered near his revolver, every sense on high alert. There were no signs of movement, but he knew danger was lurking just beyond the broken palm trees.

Suddenly, a noise—a faint shuffle—came from behind a collapsed structure. Damien and Lena moved in unison, weapons drawn. From the shadows, a figure emerged—Mira, a woman Damien had once trusted. Her clothes were torn, and blood smeared her face, but her eyes shone with defiance.

"You shouldn't have come here, Damien," she said, her voice cold.

"Mira," Damien growled, "you led them here, didn't you?"

Her lips curled into a twisted smile. "The Zombie King promised me power, safety. What did you expect? This world is about survival, and you're too blind to realize that."

Lena stepped forward, her knife gleaming in the dim light. "You killed these people. You betrayed your own."

Mira's laugh was bitter. "These people were weak. They didn't deserve to survive."

Damien felt a surge of anger but kept his voice calm. "You've chosen the wrong side, Mira. You think the Zombie King will spare you when he's done?"

"He already has," she sneered, raising her arms. From the shadows, a horde of undead rose, their grotesque forms twisted and scarred. They advanced slowly, their eyes locked on Damien and Lena.

"We need to move," Damien whispered to Lena, his voice tight with tension.

Mira's laugh echoed through the desolate Oasis. "You're not leaving here alive, Damien."

With a sharp nod, Damien signaled Lena. They sprang into action, guns blazing, cutting through the undead as they closed in. The sound of gunfire echoed across the barren land, but the horde kept coming, relentless.

Mira watched from the shadows, her grin widening as the battle unfolded. "This is just the beginning, Rook."

Damien's heart pounded as he fired his last bullet into the skull of the nearest zombie. "Lena, we need to take her out. Now."

Without hesitation, Lena charged toward Mira, her blade flashing. The two women clashed, metal against metal, as Damien reloaded, ready to finish what they'd started.

The Oasis was shattered, but this battle wasn't over.
