Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition

Chapter 218: Story 218: The Cathedral of Shadows

Damien and Lena stood at the entrance of the ancient cathedral, its towering spire casting a shadow over the dead city. The doors, once ornate and majestic, were now twisted and half-rotted, barely holding back the horrors within. This place, long abandoned by any living soul, was rumored to be the final resting place of the Scepter of Aegis, a relic that could repel the undead.

But getting it wouldn't be easy.

"We made it this far," Damien said, eyeing the dark interior of the cathedral. "No turning back now."

Lena loaded her crossbow, the weight of their mission heavy on her face. "Let's finish this."

The cathedral was silent, save for the soft drip of water leaking through cracks in the ceiling. As they moved deeper into the structure, the air grew colder, thick with a sense of dread. Damien could feel the presence of something dark, something waiting. His hand hovered near his revolver, every muscle tense.

"Do you feel that?" Lena whispered.

"Yeah. We're not alone."

They pressed forward, their footsteps echoing in the vast, empty hall. The cathedral's grand arches and stained-glass windows, once symbols of hope, were now covered in dust and grime, barely recognizable. In the center of the nave stood an altar, and above it, embedded in a massive stone, was the Scepter of Aegis. Its silver shaft gleamed faintly in the dim light.

"We found it," Damien said, his heart pounding. But as they approached, a deep growl echoed through the chamber.

From the shadows emerged a towering figure—a Wraith Lord, its skeletal frame cloaked in black mist, eyes glowing with a malevolent red. The creature hissed, its bony fingers gripping a staff adorned with skulls. This was no ordinary guardian. The Zombie King had sent one of his strongest minions to protect the scepter.

"Damien!" Lena shouted, raising her crossbow.

Without hesitation, Damien drew his revolver and fired, but the bullets passed harmlessly through the wraith's ethereal form. The creature roared and lashed out with its staff, sending a wave of dark energy surging toward them.

"Get down!" Damien yelled, diving behind a crumbling pillar as the wave of energy smashed into the stone, sending shards flying. Lena rolled to the side, narrowly avoiding the blast.

"We can't fight it like this!" Lena shouted.

Damien's mind raced. He remembered the legends—only the Scepter of Aegis could banish the undead. They needed to get to it, fast.

"Cover me!" he ordered, sprinting toward the altar.

Lena unleashed a volley of arrows, each one passing through the wraith but momentarily distracting it. The creature hissed, turning its glowing eyes on her as Damien raced toward the scepter. The stone pedestal holding the relic seemed to pulse with power, and Damien reached out, gripping the cold metal shaft.

The moment his fingers touched the scepter, a surge of energy coursed through him. The wraith screeched, its form flickering as the power of the artifact weakened it.

"Now!" Damien shouted, raising the scepter high.

With a blinding flash of light, the Wraith Lord was consumed, its form dissolving into mist. The cathedral fell silent once more.

Breathing heavily, Damien lowered the scepter. "Let's get out of here."
