Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition

Chapter 304: Story 304: Into the Dark

Zara and Callum pressed their backs against a toppled shelf, the guttural snarls of crawlers growing louder by the second. The grocery store's shadows seemed to stretch, alive with the eerie shuffle of undead feet. Zara's heart pounded, not from fear, but from the precise calculation required to get out alive.

"Five of them," Zara whispered, counting the faint figures moving between the broken aisles.

"Make that six," Callum murmured, her rifle shifting to track a crawler emerging from behind a display.

"We don't have the ammo for this," Zara hissed. "Not without bringing the whole block down on us."

Callum smirked, her voice steady. "Got a better idea?"

Zara scanned their surroundings, her sharp eyes catching a narrow doorway behind the aisles. A storage room, maybe an exit. "Follow my lead," she said, motioning for Callum to move.

Zara darted low and fast, weaving through the debris-strewn floor. Her boots made no sound against the cracked tiles, her years of survival making her movements second nature. Callum followed close behind, her rifle poised for a clean shot if needed.

The first crawler noticed them, its rotting face snapping upward with an inhuman snarl. Zara didn't hesitate. She lunged, driving her knife through its temple before its scream could alert the others.

Callum raised an eyebrow. "Efficient."

Zara shot her a look. "Keep moving."

They reached the doorway just as one of the crawlers turned their way, its grotesque screech cutting through the air like a siren. The others followed, their twisted forms lurching toward the two women with horrifying speed.

"Go!" Zara shouted, throwing herself against the door. It groaned on rusted hinges but didn't budge. "It's stuck!"

Callum pivoted, rifle raised. "Cover me!"

Zara drew her handgun, firing precise shots to slow the oncoming horde. The echo of gunfire filled the small space, each bullet landing cleanly, but the crawlers kept coming. Read exclusive content at My Virtual Library Empire

"Any day now!" Zara barked as Callum kicked the door with all her strength.

With a final, splintering crack, the door gave way, and Callum stumbled through. Zara followed, slamming the door shut behind them. She jammed a metal bar through the handles just as the first crawler slammed against the other side.

The two women stood in the dimly lit storage room, catching their breath. Crates of long-expired goods surrounded them, along with a ladder leading to an open hatch in the ceiling.

Zara holstered her gun, gesturing toward the ladder. "Up. We're not safe yet."

Callum nodded, climbing quickly as the door behind them started to give. The snarls and pounding grew more desperate, the crawlers relentless in their pursuit.

As Zara climbed after Callum, she glanced down just as the door burst open. Decayed hands clawed toward her, but she pulled herself through the hatch, slamming it shut behind her.

They were on the roof now, the cold night air biting at their faces. Below, the city stretched out in eerie silence, the horde trapped beneath them—for now.

"Nice call," Callum said, panting.

Zara stared out over the ruins, her jaw tight. "We're not done yet."
