Chapter 309: Story 309: The Turning Point

Zara Kincaid stood at the edge of the makeshift loading bay as the first rays of dawn painted the horizon. Around her, the supply run team prepped their gear—tightening straps, checking ammo, and whispering last-minute prayers. Despite the organized chaos, Zara couldn't shake the heavy weight of unease pressing on her chest.

"You're too quiet," Callum said, coming up beside her. His voice was steady, but his eyes betrayed the same unease she felt.

"I'm thinking," Zara replied. "This mission is more than just a supply run. Kade's testing us, seeing how far he can push before we push back."

"Then let's not give him a reason to win," Callum muttered, gripping the hilt of his blade. "We go in, we get the supplies, and we get out. No heroics."

Zara gave him a faint smile. "Since when are you the cautious one?"

Before Callum could answer, Captain Renna approached, her presence commanding instant silence. "You've been briefed," she said curtly. "Stick to the plan, and you might live to see tomorrow. Fall behind, and don't expect anyone to come back for you." Her gaze lingered on Zara for a fraction longer than necessary before she turned and walked away.

The convoy moved out, heading deep into the ruins of what was once a thriving city. Now, the streets were eerily quiet, littered with the skeletal remains of vehicles and crumbled buildings. Zara scanned every shadow, her senses on high alert. The mission's objective—a supply depot rumored to hold medical kits and rations—was critical for the survival of Ravenwood's inhabitants, but the route was a deathtrap.

"Contact ahead," a voice crackled over the comms. Zara squinted, spotting a group of shambling figures emerging from the wreckage. At first glance, they seemed like the typical undead, slow and mindless. But as they drew closer, their movements became more erratic, their heads snapping toward the convoy like predators scenting prey.

"Stalkers," Zara whispered. These were no ordinary zombies—they were faster, smarter, and far deadlier.

"Hold position!" she ordered, raising her weapon. The team braced as the stalkers charged, their guttural growls echoing through the streets. The first wave hit hard, claws and teeth tearing at anything in their path. Zara's movements were precise, her bullets finding their marks, but the sheer number of attackers threatened to overwhelm them.

"Fall back!" she shouted, but as the team scrambled for cover, a deafening roar split the air. From the shadows of a crumbling building emerged a creature unlike anything Zara had seen—a hulking brute of a zombie, its grotesque body pulsating with unnatural energy.

"New plan," Callum said, his voice grim. "Run!"

The team scattered, Zara leading the charge toward the depot. Her mind raced as she calculated their dwindling odds of survival. The brute was faster than expected, closing the gap with terrifying speed. But Zara wasn't about to let Kade's twisted game end her story here.

As the depot came into view, she made a split-second decision. "Callum, get the others inside! I'll hold it off!"

"Zara—"

"Go!" she barked, turning to face the charging beast. With a steely resolve, she drew her knives, ready to face the nightmare head-on.
