Chapter 313: Story 313: Echoes in the Dark
The growl echoed through the dense forest, low and menacing, as if the trees themselves were warning Zara and her team to turn back. Zara's grip on her twin blades tightened, her muscles coiled like a spring. She signaled for the group to fan out silently, their weapons drawn.
"Eyes on me," Zara whispered, her voice barely audible. "Stay close and keep moving. Whatever's out there, we can't let it surround us."
Mia and Andre exchanged wary glances but followed Zara's lead, stepping lightly through the undergrowth. Callum took up the rear, his rifle raised, scanning their surroundings for any signs of movement.
The forest seemed unnaturally still, as if holding its breath. The shadows between the trees seemed to stretch and twist, playing tricks on their eyes. Zara's instincts screamed at her that they were being hunted.
A sudden rustle to her left made Zara spin on her heel, her blades ready. A fleeting shape darted between the trees, too fast to make out.
"Contact," Zara hissed.
Before anyone could respond, the attack came. A snarling creature leapt from the shadows, its form a grotesque amalgamation of flesh and bone. It moved with terrifying speed, its clawed hands swiping at Zara. She ducked under its attack and slashed upward, her blade slicing into its arm.
The creature shrieked and recoiled, black ichor dripping from its wound. But it wasn't alone. More figures emerged from the darkness, their deformed bodies lurching toward the group.
"Engage!" Zara shouted, her voice cutting through the chaos.
Callum's rifle barked, a series of sharp cracks as he took down two of the creatures in quick succession. Mia spun her combat knife with precision, slashing at a creature that lunged at her. Andre swung his makeshift axe, its heavy blade cleaving through another attacker.
Zara moved like a whirlwind, her blades a blur as she cut through the horde. She darted between enemies, her strikes precise and lethal. Despite their grotesque appearance, the creatures were fast and relentless, their attacks coordinated as if guided by some unseen force.

"Zara, there's too many!" Callum yelled, reloading his rifle.
Zara's mind raced as she fought off another attacker. The creatures weren't just attacking randomly—they were herding the group, pushing them deeper into the forest. She realized too late that this was a trap.
"Fall back!" Zara commanded.
But as the team tried to retreat, a deafening roar shook the air, freezing them in their tracks. From the darkness ahead, a massive figure emerged. It stood twice the height of any man, its hulking form bristling with jagged spines. Its glowing red eyes locked onto Zara, and she felt a chill unlike any she'd experienced before.
"Stay together," Zara said, her voice firm despite the fear clawing at her.
The massive creature let out another roar and charged, the ground trembling beneath its weight. Zara stepped forward, determination blazing in her eyes.
"If it's a fight you want," she muttered, raising her blades, "then let's finish this."
