Chapter 323: Story 323: The Pulse of the Unknown

Zara sprinted through the chaos, the creatures closing in like shadows given life. Behind her, the team fought desperately to hold the line. Andre's shotgun roared, the sound reverberating off the cavern walls, while Mia's precise strikes bought them precious seconds. Callum, despite his injured ankle, took aim with his rifle, his face pale but resolute.

The central hub loomed ahead, its pulsating glyphs lighting the chamber with an eerie, rhythmic glow. Zara's heart pounded in sync with the hum emanating from the structure. Every instinct told her that this was the key—if she could destroy it, they might have a chance to turn the tide.

"Zara, go! We'll cover you!" Andre shouted, unloading another round into the nearest creature.

Without hesitation, she vaulted over a shattered console, her boots skidding as she landed just feet from the hub. Up close, the glyphs seemed almost hypnotic, shifting and swirling as if alive. Zara quickly scanned the structure, her eyes narrowing as she spotted what appeared to be an access panel near its base.

She reached for her EMP device, a compact unit salvaged during one of their earlier raids. If the glyphs were feeding off an energy source, the EMP might disrupt it long enough to weaken the creatures—or destroy the hub entirely.

As she worked to activate the device, a guttural screech split the air. Zara turned just in time to see one of the creatures lunging toward her. Instinct kicked in, and she spun, her blade slicing through the air. The creature collapsed, writhing as dark ichor pooled beneath it.

"Faster, Zara!" Mia's voice carried over the din of battle, her tone urgent.

"I'm trying!" Zara growled, forcing the EMP into the panel's exposed circuitry. Sparks flew, and the device began to hum with power.

The glyphs on the hub reacted immediately, flaring brighter and then flickering erratically. The creatures faltered, their movements becoming disjointed, but only for a moment. One by one, their glyphs reignited, and their attacks became even more frenzied.

"It's not enough!" Zara shouted, frustration boiling over.

Andre's voice came through gritted teeth. "Plan B?"

Zara's jaw tightened. Plan B was risky, but there was no other choice. She reached into her pack and retrieved a small charge of C4, slapping it onto the hub's base. The timer blinked to life, giving her thirty seconds.

"Fall back!" Zara yelled, her voice cutting through the chaos.

The team began to retreat, firing as they moved. Zara turned to follow, but a massive creature, larger than the others, emerged from the shadows. Its glowing eyes locked onto her, and it charged.

With no time to think, Zara dove to the side, narrowly avoiding its crushing blow. The timer ticked down. Continue your journey on My Virtual Library Empire

"Zara, move!" Mia screamed.

Zara scrambled to her feet and sprinted toward the team, the explosion behind her sending a shockwave that lit up the chamber.

As the dust settled, Zara looked back, her breath catching. The hub was in ruins, but so was the path ahead. And the creatures… they weren't gone. They were changing.

"Round two," Zara muttered, gripping her blade tightly.
