Chapter 326: Story 326: The Sacrifice

Zara leaned against the console, her breathing ragged. The soft hum of the generator now carried an ominous ticking—each second echoing her choice. The countdown was live: two minutes until detonation. There was no margin for error, no second chances.

The room trembled as the creatures, enraged by the activation of their destruction, surged through the corridor. Andre, Callum, and Mia fought furiously at the entrance, their backs to one another in a desperate circle of resistance.

"Zara! It's now or never!" Andre barked, his voice cracking as his shotgun jammed mid-reload. He tossed it aside, drawing his machete.

Zara tightened her grip on her blade. She knew the plan was suicide, but the lives beyond this hive were worth the sacrifice. As the creatures clawed and shrieked, she made her decision.

"Take the lift!" she shouted over the din, pointing toward the emergency shaft at the back of the room.

Callum's eyes widened. "What? No! We're not leaving you!"

"You don't have a choice!" Zara snapped, her voice firm, her expression resolute. "I need someone to tell the world what happened here. This ends with me."

Mia staggered forward, her hand clutching a bloodied wound on her side. "You can't do this alone! We can hold them off together—"

"No, you can't," Zara interrupted, her gaze softening. "This hive doesn't end unless someone stays. Go. Now."

Andre hesitated, his hand trembling as he reached for Mia's arm. "We have to move. If we don't, her sacrifice will be for nothing."

Mia's eyes filled with tears, but she nodded, understanding the weight of Zara's resolve. Callum gritted his teeth, unwilling but knowing he couldn't argue. Together, they dragged Mia toward the lift.

"Zara!" Mia screamed as the lift began its slow ascent. Your journey continues on My Virtual Library Empire

Zara turned her back to them, facing the wave of monstrosities crashing into the room. Her blade gleamed under the flickering blue light. She adjusted the straps of her leather harness and squared her shoulders.

"For every life you've taken," she whispered, stepping forward, "I'll make you pay."

The creatures swarmed, their grotesque forms merging into a tide of teeth and claws. Zara charged into the fray, her blade slicing through the air with lethal precision. Each swing was fueled by fury and determination, carving a path of destruction.

Above, the lift clanged shut, and the muffled sobs of her team faded into silence. Zara smiled grimly.

The clock ticked to its final seconds.

The creatures overwhelmed her, their weight crushing, their claws relentless. But Zara stood her ground, defiant to the end.

When the timer hit zero, the generator erupted in a blinding surge of energy, engulfing the hive in a cataclysmic explosion. The ground above trembled as fire and debris consumed the lair, reducing it to ash.

Miles away, Andre, Mia, and Callum stared at the rising plume of smoke, their hearts heavy with loss. Zara Kincaid had won the fight—and saved the world—but at the ultimate cost.
