Chapter 345: Story 345: Into the Abyss

The stolen vehicle roared through the forested outskirts of the city, its tires kicking up dirt and fallen leaves. Zara kept her hands steady on the wheel, her gaze focused on the winding road ahead. Beside her, Callum adjusted his bandages, wincing with each bump. In the backseat, Selena Rourke sat cuffed, her sharp gaze tracking Zara's every move. "You think this little victory matters?" Rourke sneered. "You've burned a hole in the hornet's nest, Zara. They'll come for you—harder, faster, more ruthless than ever."

Zara didn't respond. She gripped the wheel tighter, her knuckles turning white. Callum shot a glare at Rourke. "You're awfully chatty for someone in handcuffs. Keep it up, and I'll gag you."

Rourke smirked but said nothing more.

"Vera," Zara called into her comm. "How far are we from the safe house?"

"Ten miles," Vera replied, her voice calm but tinged with urgency. "I've rerouted you to avoid drone patrols. You'll need to stay off the main roads."

Zara nodded, turning onto a dirt path shrouded in dense foliage. The engine's rumble seemed deafening in the stillness of the forest. Every shadow felt alive, every branch a potential ambush.

As they drove, Callum glanced at Zara. "We need to talk about what happens next. Keeping Rourke alive is a risk. She's a ticking time bomb."

"We need her," Zara replied firmly. "She's the key to bringing down the Syndicate. Without her testimony and intel, we're just flailing in the dark."

Callum sighed. "I hope you're right."

Suddenly, a sharp beeping filled the cabin. Vera's voice broke through the static. "Zara, you've got company—three vehicles inbound from the north, moving fast. They must've tracked you."

"Damn it," Zara muttered, slamming her foot on the accelerator. The vehicle lurched forward, its engine growling as it sped down the uneven path.

"Any chance you can slow them down?" Callum asked, gripping his rifle.

"I'm working on it," Vera replied. "But you'll need to buy time."

Zara glanced at Callum. "Get ready."

As the first pursuing vehicle came into view, Callum rolled down his window and leaned out, taking aim. The sharp crack of his rifle echoed through the forest, and the lead vehicle swerved, crashing into a tree.

The second vehicle sped up, closing the distance. Zara swerved sharply, forcing it to veer off the path. The third vehicle, however, was more persistent, its passengers firing at them.

"Hold on!" Zara shouted, steering toward a narrow bridge spanning a deep ravine.

The enemy vehicle was gaining ground, its headlights blinding in the rearview mirror. Just as they reached the bridge, Zara yanked the wheel hard, skidding to the side. The pursuing vehicle couldn't react in time—it slammed into the bridge's railing, teetered, and plunged into the abyss below.

Breathing heavily, Zara pressed on, the safe house now within reach. But in the backseat, Rourke's cold smile hadn't faltered. "Impressive," she said. "But this is far from over."

Zara didn't respond. The fight was only just beginning.
