Chapter 565: Story 565: Siege on Main Street
The mid-morning sun cast long shadows over the city, but the scene on Main Street was anything but peaceful. The ZETU squad stood atop an abandoned school bus, now their makeshift command post. Below, hundreds of zombies snarled and clawed at the rusted metal sides, their sheer numbers threatening to tip the vehicle over.
Captain Marcus Kane surveyed the chaotic street with a grim expression. Broken vehicles and debris cluttered the area, making it impossible to escape by vehicle. They were pinned in the heart of the city, with no backup insight. "Hold the line!" he shouted, firing his shotgun into the writhing mass below. Each blast sent chunks of decayed flesh flying, but for every zombie that fell, two more seemed to take its place.
Jenna "Blaze" Hart was at the back of the bus, her flamethrower creating a fiery barrier. "We can't keep this up forever, Captain! We're going to run out of fuel and ammo!" she yelled over the roar of the flames.
"Let's make what we've got count!" barked Marcus, reloading his weapon.
Above them, Ethan "Brain" O'Connor was on the roof of the bus, furiously typing on his portable command tablet. His drones buzzed overhead, dropping small explosives into the horde to slow their advance. "I've got some good news and bad news," Ethan called out. "Good news: there's a potential evac point two blocks north. Bad news: it's overrun, and we'll have to fight through this crowd to get there."
"Typical," muttered Lila "Huntress" Navarro as she sniped zombies with her dual pistols from the bus roof. Her precise shots targeted the zombies nearest to climbing aboard, but even she was starting to feel the weight of the situation.
"We've got incoming!" Riley "Quick Shot" Bennett shouted. From her perch at the front of the bus, she had spotted a new wave of zombies surging from an alleyway. This group was different—faster, stronger, and more coordinated. At their center was a towering brute, easily eight feet tall, with glowing green veins pulsating under its rotting skin.
"Is that thing... leading them?" Derek "Shield" Coleman asked, bracing himself with his riot shield near the bus door.
"Doesn't matter what it is," Marcus growled. "It dies. Riley, aim for the head. Jenna, keep the flames going! Everyone else, buy us time!"
The battle reached a fever pitch as the brute roared and charged the bus. It slammed into the vehicle, causing everyone to stumble as the bus rocked violently. Derek leapt down to meet it head-on, using his shield to block the monster's crushing blows.
"Ethan, how do we kill this thing?!" Marcus demanded, firing point-blank into the brute's chest with little effect.
"I'm scanning!" Ethan replied. "Those glowing veins—it's some kind of energy core. Aim for that!"
Lila swung down from the roof, landing on the brute's back. With surgical precision, she drove her blade into the glowing veins, causing the monster to convulse. Riley delivered the finishing blow with a sniper shot, and the brute collapsed in a heap.
The zombies began to falter, their movements sluggish. Marcus seized the moment. "Move! To the evac point!"
The team dismounted the bus, fighting their way north. The horde thinned as they advanced, leaving Main Street behind. But as they reached the evac point, a chilling sight awaited them: a second horde, larger and more organized, was already blocking their path.
"This isn't over," Marcus muttered, gripping his shotgun tighter. The team formed a defensive circle, preparing for yet another desperate stand.
