Chapter 567: Story 567: Siege of the Yellow Bus
The sun hung low, casting long shadows over the abandoned school bus perched precariously in the center of the street. Its faded yellow paint was smeared with blood and grime, while its windows, once a shield for children, were now barricades for survival. On its roof stood Captain Marcus Kane, shotgun in hand, scanning the approaching chaos. Around him, the rest of the ZETU team prepared for the inevitable storm.
"This isn't just another horde," Ethan "Brain" O'Connor said, his tablet flickering as he monitored the drone feed. "They're smarter this time—more coordinated."
Riley "Quick Shot" Bennett had already taken position, her sniper rifle aimed down at the teeming mass of undead surging down Main Street. "I've got twenty confirmed headshots left in me," she said, her voice steely. "After that, it's whatever I can scrounge."
Marcus slammed a fist into the roof of the bus. "We hold the line here. No evac unless we keep this position. Jenna, get ready with the fireworks."
Jenna "Blaze" Hart was already in action, rigging incendiary grenades to makeshift launchers she had salvaged from the bus's emergency equipment. "They'll light up like the Fourth of July," she said, a faint smirk breaking her usual grim demeanor.
As the first wave of zombies closed in, the air filled with the cacophony of moans, shuffling feet, and the occasional piercing roar. These weren't just the shambling dead—their leader, a towering brute with jagged bone protrusions, was guiding them. It moved with eerie precision, directing smaller groups to flank the team.
"They're trying to box us in!" shouted Derek "Shield" Coleman from the ground, his riot shield deflecting clawed hands as he swung his baton with brutal efficiency.
"Not today," Marcus growled. "Lila, find their entry points. Cut them off!"
Detective Lila "Huntress" Navarro leaped down from the bus roof, dual pistols firing in rapid succession as she disappeared into the surrounding alleys. Moments later, the echo of her voice crackled through Ethan's comms. "They've funneled through the west block. There's an overturned truck guiding them straight to us. I'll handle it."
As Riley's sniper rifle barked from above, picking off the closer zombies, Jenna launched her grenades into the densest parts of the horde. Flames erupted, creating a fiery barrier that temporarily halted their advance. But the brute pushed through, unfazed, letting out a guttural roar that sent shockwaves through the team.
"He's mine," Marcus said, leaping down with a crash. The brute charged, its claws raking through the air as Marcus fired shot after shot, each blast staggering the massive creature but failing to bring it down.
The ground trembled beneath their feet as the brute swiped wildly, knocking Marcus off balance. Just as it loomed over him for the killing blow, a distant explosion rocked the street. Lila had succeeded in collapsing the western alley, cutting off reinforcements.
Seizing the moment, Derek rammed into the brute with his shield, giving Marcus the opening he needed. A well-placed shotgun blast tore through the creature's skull, and it collapsed in a heap.
The remaining zombies faltered without their leader, allowing the team to regroup.
"We held the line," Marcus said, panting. But as Ethan's tablet beeped with an incoming alert, the victory felt short-lived.
"Another wave," Ethan muttered. "Twice the size. ETA: ten minutes."
Marcus looked at his team. "Then we hold it again."
