Chapter 577: Story 577: The Screamer
The air hung heavy with tension as ZETU's armored convoy rolled deeper into the dense, mist-covered forest. A chilling cry had been reported in the area—an unearthly scream that made survivors abandon their camps in terror. Captain Marcus Kane studied the terrain, his grip tight on his shotgun.
"Something's off," Marcus muttered. "This isn't the usual infection pattern."
Jenna "Blaze" Hart leaned forward, clutching her flamethrower. "The reports said it wasn't just a scream. People who heard it went mad—some didn't survive."
Ethan "Brain" O'Connor's voice crackled over the comms. "The acoustics of the soundwave suggest it's not just a scream—it's weaponized. Some kind of bio-acoustic attack."
As the team disembarked near the epicenter of the reports, Detective Lila "Huntress" Navarro crouched low, scanning the fog with her thermal scope. "No heat signatures… but the trees are covered in something."
The team approached cautiously. Twisted, blackened roots snaked up the trees, pulsating like veins. Riley "Quick Shot" Bennett spotted claw marks etched into the bark, deep and deliberate.
"Looks like something dragged itself through here," Riley said.
Suddenly, the scream erupted. A blood-curdling, bone-rattling wail echoed through the forest, freezing the team in place. Blaze clutched her helmet, groaning in pain. Marcus shouted commands, but his voice was drowned out.
Then it emerged—a creature unlike anything they had faced before. Its body was a grotesque fusion of decayed flesh and intertwining roots. Its mouth stretched unnaturally wide, emitting the piercing scream. Its hollow eyes glowed red as it locked onto the team.
"Target sighted!" Marcus yelled. "Open fire!"
Riley took the first shot, her sniper bullet hitting the creature's shoulder. It staggered but unleashed another scream, the force of it sending Derek "Shield" Coleman crashing backward, his riot shield splintering.
"Flank it!" Marcus ordered.
Blaze advanced, her flamethrower roaring to life. The flames licked at the creature, and for a moment, it recoiled, the roots on its body writhing in agony. But then it screeched again, louder, its voice amplified by the forest itself. The trees seemed to vibrate, releasing spores into the air.
"Mask up!" Ethan barked over the comms.
Lila darted through the chaos, her dual pistols firing into the creature's exposed joints. She spotted something—a pulsating mass at the base of its throat.
"It's the vocal cords!" Lila shouted. "That's its weak point!"
Ethan scanned the data from his drone. "Confirmed! You take that out, we silence it for good!"
Riley took position on a nearby hill. "Cover me. One shot is all I need."
Blaze and Marcus drew the creature's attention, dodging its sweeping claws and deafening screams. Lila tossed a smoke grenade to obscure Riley's position.
The sniper exhaled, steadying her aim. "Got you."
The bullet flew true, piercing the creature's throat. Its scream cut off mid-wail, replaced by a gurgling hiss. The roots on its body withered, and it collapsed into a lifeless heap.
The forest fell silent, the oppressive atmosphere lifting.
"Mission accomplished," Marcus said, though his voice carried a note of unease.
Ethan studied the remnants of the creature. "This thing wasn't natural. Someone—or something—is engineering them."
Marcus nodded grimly. "Then we've got a bigger fight ahead."
