Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition

Chapter 590: Story 590: Rise of the Devourer

The earth trembled beneath the feet of the ZETU team as an unholy roar echoed from the abyss. The pit, once a chasm of writhing corpses, now pulsed with a nightmarish energy. The horde of skeletal zombies, their arms stretched to the sky, convulsed as if under a spell. Then, without warning, they dropped to their knees, worshipping something unseen.

Marcus "Iron Will" Kane didn't like this. Not one bit. "Everyone, fall back! Now!"

Riley "Quick Shot" Bennett fired a shot at the closest undead, but the bullet barely fazed it. "Captain, they're not attacking anymore. They're…waiting."

A horrifying silhouette began to rise from the depths. It was massive, its skeletal frame wrapped in rotting flesh and blackened tendrils that pulsed like living veins. Its hollow eye sockets glowed with a hellish light. The creature was no ordinary zombie—it was the Devourer, a being of pure necrotic energy, the source of the undead plague.

Ethan "Brain" O'Connor's voice crackled through their comms, his drone's feed displaying the monstrosity in high resolution. "Guys, I'm detecting radiation-like readings. This thing isn't just a zombie—it's an ancient bio-weapon."

Marcus clenched his jaw. "Then we kill it."

The Devourer let out a guttural, bone-shaking growl. The horde surged forward once more, this time with renewed aggression.

Derek "Shield" Coleman slammed his riot shield into an oncoming zombie, sending it sprawling. "We need an exit, Captain!"

Lila "Huntress" Navarro's knives gleamed as she tore through the swarm. "There's no way out! We either fight or we die!"

Jenna "Blaze" Hart gritted her teeth and activated her flamethrower. "Then let's turn up the heat." A wave of fire engulfed the front lines, incinerating dozens of the creatures, but the Devourer remained unfazed.

The beast raised its clawed hands, and suddenly, the burning corpses twitched—then stood back up.

Marcus's heart pounded. "It can resurrect the dead… even after we've killed them."

Ethan's voice was frantic. "If we don't end this thing now, it'll spread beyond the city. We need a tactical nuke, or—"

Marcus cut him off. "We don't have that luxury. We make our own."

Jenna's eyes widened. "You want me to set off all my explosives at once?"

"It's our only shot," Marcus growled.

Jenna hesitated for only a second before setting the charges. "Thirty seconds to detonation!"

The Devourer shrieked and lashed out, its tendrils ripping through the air. Marcus unloaded his shotgun into its face. Riley's sniper bullets hit their mark. Lila and Derek fought like demons, carving a path through the horde.

Jenna slammed the detonator. "Fire in the hole!"

The world exploded in flames.

As the inferno consumed the battlefield, Marcus barely had time to register one last horrifying detail: The Devourer wasn't dying.

It was evolving.
