Chapter 9: The Lift Of Horror

In the bustling corridors of St. Mary's Hospital, Emma....a young vivacious nurse with a bright smile was known for her infectious energy.

She loved her job and cared deeply for her patients but outside work Emma was a free spirit who partied hard and enjoyed her carefree life.

One fateful night, her world turned into a nightmare that would haunt her forever after a late night drinks party with her boyfriend Ryan. Emma arrived for her night shift at the hospital, she was still tipsy but quickly changed into her scrubs, masking her inebriated with a splash of cold water on her face.

The faint smell of alcohol lingered on her breath. As she began her rounds among her patients was an elderly man named Mr Carter, a widower who had recently admitted for a routine checkup he was frail but stable.

As Emma prepared his medication, her blurred judgement let her to pick up the wrong syringe; unknowingly she injected Mr Carter with a drug meant for another patient, minutes later Mr Carter's body began to convulse.

Emma panicked and called for help but by the time the doctor stabilized him the damage was done half of his body was paralyzed and his speech was lost however his right hand remained functional and he used it to point at Emma whenever she entered his room.

Initially Emma thought, he was trying to communicate something but his teary eyes and trembling finger made her uncomfortable, she couldn't understand what he wanted to say nor did she connect it to her mistake. Despite her guilt; she resolved to care for him diligently feeling an inexplicable pull towards him but as days passed Mr Carter's condition worsened his entire body became paralyzed leaving him with only the ability to blink everytime she passed by his eyes would follow her pleading silently.

Emma confided in Ryan about that incident but he brushed it off reminding her that illness and death were part of her profession.

One day Mr Carter slipped into coma and Emma was reassigned to another floor with time she buried the incident in the recesses of her mind. Months later during a coffee break with a colleague Emma froze in her tracks through the glass window of the cafeteria, she saw Mr Carter walking down the corridor; her heart leaped in joy and disbelief "he recovered" she thought her guilt momentarily replaced by relief. She ran after him shouting, " Mr Carter it's me Emma " the man stepped into an elevator and Emma quickly followed inside the elevator.

She bubbled with excitement, "uncle you're okay, now I'm so happy to see you, I took care of you when you were here. Do you remember me?" but the man didn't turn to face her. He stood still his back to her the elevator jolted and the light flickered before plunging into darkness, "don't worry uncle" she said nervously "the backup will come on soon", suddenly she felt cold bony hands gripping her throat and lift her off the ground she gasped for air clawing at invisible force as she choked her vision blurred and just as she thought she would lose consciousness, the lights flickered back on Emma collapsed to the floor trembling and gasping for breath the elevator doors opened but Mr. Carter was gone.

As she staggered out, she saw a young girl sobbing in the hallway "Dad....Dad" the girl cried running toward the ICU, Emma's blood ran cold she sprinted to the ICU only to find Mr Carter's bed empty a nurse informed her Mr Carter passed away 15 minutes ago.

From that night onwards, Emma's life spiraled into a series of terrifying encounters every time she drink alcohol see shadowy figures lurking in her apartment or hear whispers calling her name.

Once she woke up to find Mr Carter's face inches from hers his paralyzed features twisted in anger the nightmares worsened in one she found herself in the ICU surrounded by her patients angry disfigured spirits pointing accusing fingers at her. The final straw came when she saw her reflection in a morph into Mr Carter's lifeless face his voice hoarse and echoing whispered, "you killed me" Emma terrified and guilt ridden Emma swore off alcohol she began to piece together the truth the wrong injection Mr Credit suffering and his spirits torment.

One stormy night, Emma was alone in the hospital storage room; gathering supplies the lights flickered and the room turned icy cold, she turned to leave but found the door locked.

A shadow emerged from the corner, growing larger and darker until it formed Mr Carter's apparition. His eyes burned with anger "why Emma" his voice echoed guttural and mournful "you were careless, my daughter is alone because of you" tears streamed down Emma's face "I didn't mean to, I am so sorry please forgive me".

Mr Carter's spirit loomed closer his finger pointing accusingly at her the room filled with whispers groans and cries "your negligence took my life.. you robbed my daughter of her father". Emma fell to her knees sobbing uncontrollably "I'll do anything to make it right please" the whisper subsided and the spirits voice softened "live with your guilt Emma, let it to remind you to never be careless again.... my daughter's pain is your punishment" with that the spirit vanished leaving Emma in darkness.

From that night onwards, Emma dedicated her work with unwavering sincerity. For her patients safety she never touched alcohol again thought and never saw Mr Carter's spirit again. His voice lingered in her mind a constant reminder of her mistake. Emma lived with her guilt finding solace in saving lives and ensuring no one else suffered due to negligence but every now and then in the stillness of the night she felt a cold breeze and heard a faint whisper, "remember me Emma".
