Chapter 18: DADA

The pungent aroma of garlic hung heavy in the air as Professor Quirrell entered the classroom.

A few students exchanged puzzled glances before one finally spoke up. "Excuse me, sir, but why do you smell so strongly of garlic?"

Quirrell's eyes flickered with something unreadable before he quickly composed himself. He gave a small, nervous shudder before replying, his voice slightly unsteady, "B... before arriving at Hogwarts, I... I travelled to Romania, where I had a rather unpleasant run-in with v... vampires." He swallowed, his fingers twitching slightly as he adjusted his turban. "Though I... I am quite safe now, it n... never hurts to take precautions. Garlic, as you may know, is q... quite effective at keeping them away."

Of course, not everyone was convinced by his words. Ron, frowning slightly, hesitated before speaking. "But sir, isn't Hogwarts the safest place? I don't think vampires would come here. After all, Dumbledore is the strongest wizard around."

His words cut through the room like a knife, making Quirrell stiffen. For a brief moment, his gaze darkened as he stared at Ron, causing the boy to gulp.

"I... I said it's better to be cautious," Quirrell muttered, his voice quieter now, yet carrying an eerie weight. "Vampires never forget their prey."

A tense silence hung in the air for a moment before Quirrell straightened, forcing a stiff smile as he adjusted his turban.

"Ahem... r... returning to our subject, Defence Against the Dark Arts," he stammered, his usual nervousness creeping back in. "Can... can someone tell me what this subject covers?"

Several students exchanged glances before Harry's hand shot up. Though many knew the answer, not everyone was eager to speak.

Quirrell's gaze flickered toward him, his lips pressing together briefly before he gave a small nod. "Y... yes, M... Mr. Potter?"

Harry lowered his hand and said, "Defence Against the Dark Arts teaches us how to protect ourselves from dark creatures, curses, and other dangerous magic."

Quirrell gave a shaky nod. "R-right answer, M... Mr. Potter. V... very good. Yes, defence is essential. You n-never know what dangers may lurk... even in the safest of places."

He swallowed and straightened slightly, his fingers still twitching as he adjusted his robes. "And this subject will teach you how to protect yourselves from the v-various dangers you may f-face in the future."

His gaze lingered on Harry for a fraction too long before he turned toward the board, fumbling with a stack of parchments. "Now then... l-let's begin."

"I don't think we will learn anything from him," Theondar muttered with a sigh, casting a quick glance at Quirrell. "How did they even let him teach?"

"He should be able to. Otherwise, he wouldn't be allowed," Draco said. "But I suppose it's possible that he's... not exactly the best choice. Still, Dumbledore wouldn't have hired him if he was a deceiver, right?"

Seeing Quirrell shudder and hearing Draco's words, Theondar spoke up. "I hope you're right..." He paused, his brow furrowing. "I don't think Dumbledore has lost his sensibility, but still," he added, his voice lowering, "I still feel there's something off about him."

There is something off about him, Draco wanted to shout but didn't.

At least I know he is here, Draco's thoughts spun as he tried to make sense of what he had noticed. Just seconds ago, he had felt it, a face on the back of Quirrell's head, which was covered by his turban, making it difficult to see with his eyes but not with his ears.

"I need enough strength to handle him after his body restoration," Draco thought, his mind racing. "That gives me three years, if the base events don't change. Especially those Horcruxes I need to be strong enough to deal with them. Though in the films, they show that they only make the person darker, I don't think it'll be that simple."

Given that this is an alternate version of the world, I can't imagine the objects or even the numbers would be the same. If I'm fortunate, there might be fewer, but if my luck's bad, there could be more.

I also can't underestimate the danger of various creatures, just like he said about vampires physically stronger, with a longer lifespan, capable of magic, yet with major weaknesses like garlic, sunlight, and more.

In fact, they are one of the most powerful factions in the world, from what I know, Draco mused, thinking about various known factions along with wizards like werewolfs , goblins and some others.

And then there were the Death Eaters. Draco couldn't help but wonder which of the people in this room would end up joining their ranks or perhaps, be trained to do so by their families. His eyes flicked over the Slytherins, a mix of ambition, pride, and secrecy written in their expressions. There were those who might ally with him, those who might challenge him, and, worse still, those whose true loyalties were yet hidden beneath their polished masks.

As he watched them, his thoughts raced. Some of them, he knew, would grow into powerful wizards, capable of swaying the course of history with their decisions. Others might be more easily manipulated like pawns in a game they didn't yet understand. But who among them could he trust? That, he wasn't sure.

And then, there was Harry Potter. Draco's gaze shifted involuntarily toward him. It's going to be a long year,' he muttered, his mind already racing with the various events yet to unfold.
