HP - Shadow Monarch!

Chapter 201: Chapter 200 - The tournament.

[Chapter Size: 2100 Words.]

Third Person POV

Durmstrang Institute.

...

...

"Begin!", the judge announced.

At the same moment, Severus's opponent pointed his wand at him, but a flash was already upon the boy, who could only raise his eyebrow and eyes in surprise, seeing the final milliseconds before the spell hit him.

Before he could even move, he was struck and thrown backward, surprising everyone. He rolled across the floor, frozen in that position, until he stopped outside the dueling area.

Everyone fell silent. For a moment, they were stunned by what had just happened. The judge tried to understand what was going on as she looked at the body lying on the ground, frozen, and at Severus, who was putting his wand away at that moment.

Severus had stepped onto the platform and faced his opponent, while the student from Brazil held an arrogant look and a smile that said he had already won that fight.

The judge recalled the special rules imposed by the headmistress of the Durmstrang institute and asked both to take their positions. When she finally started the match, the Brazilian's smile vanished, replaced by terror just before being struck — he had been defeated so quickly that the judge could do nothing but announce the winner of that match after a few seconds in silence.

"Severus Snape of Hogwarts, is the winner!", she said.

The whole place still remained silent, still surprised and stunned. That was surprisingly fast, and almost no one had seen when Snape cast his paralysis spell.

He was so fast that the other didn't even have a chance to properly draw his wand, much less create a shield to defend himself, wondering if they could handle that.

"Very well, Sev!", Pandora was the one who broke the silence, shouting from the area where the Hogwarts students were while clapping. That quickly made all the others copy her, still surprised by Snape's performance, certainly their favorite, and now showing why.

"You may return to your place," the judge requested, while Snape left the area with Enzo being attended to by the Brazilian students for recovery. Meanwhile, Snape's group gained their 3 points and moved ahead of everyone.

"Very well, Mr. Snape! As expected, you showed why Hogwarts is going to be the champion!", Professor Flitwick said, clapping, elated, as he approached to extend his hand to Snape with pride.

Snape merely nodded as he let go of the professor's handshake and simply moved to a corner, avoiding looks and even the people who thanked him for his victory as if he were their hope for Hogwarts to win.

The duels continued, with students stepping onto the stage. None other than the remaining members of Severus's group who hadn't yet fought, faced their opponents: students from the other schools.

This match was between a teenager from the American school and a girl from Beauxbatons, with the girl winning.

The last player of group A was from the Durmstrang Institute against the school from Africa, with Africa emerging victorious, while students from the Durmstrang Institute protested against the performance of the American school, claiming it hadn't been fair.

Hours passed until finally the last challenger had finished their match, already in the late afternoon.

"Well, this was the first day of trials. We will have five days to eliminate all the groups, while the students will be prepared for the next day, rested. That's why we chose to have only one match per day," the headmistress said, and everyone nodded.

"Where were you? Why did you leave?", Clarisse asked, curious as she noticed Snape back.

"Went for a walk," he simply said.

"Alone out there? Everyone is here in the arena, for Merlin's sake, Severus..." she murmured while Snape merely shrugged.

"You know me," was the only thing he said, as they returned to the main hall for dinner and then headed to the dormitory.

Snape's performance drew so much attention that everyone looked at his duel as if it were a once-in-a-lifetime event. The next day, Snape was once again in the arena, now facing a student from America.

This duel was lighter, while the match seemed more challenging, but he was merely holding back. Snape didn't intend to humiliate as he had done with that student from Brazil.

It continued until he finally won, with the opponent falling to the ground, defeated. Satisfied with that, he turned around and left the arena.

He stayed there for a while with the students, watching them, disappearing among them as soon as no one was looking at him so much anymore.

Lily was watching him at that moment, while he didn't even seem to care about her, his eyes somewhat complicated regarding Snape, but there was nothing to be said, so he simply disappeared with his eyes disappearing from her.

That day, he was speaking with the manager of Gringotts Bank in the middle of London, while handling a certain transaction.

"You really want to buy this, Mr. Snape? I mean, I don't want to offend you or anything," he began carefully. "But this will be a fortune, and you've just come out of a massive debt. Why so much?", the goblin asked.

"This is personal, Mr. Manager. Anyway, can you do this for me?", he said, as the man leaned forward.

"Yes," he finally replied.

Snape began to leave the place as he went to his stores to check on things before returning to Sweden.

During the days that passed, Snape would sometimes explore the Durmstrang castle, sometimes return through some paintings at night, always progressing through the portals. Or he would be in England, doing business or tending to matters of his enterprises, while also practicing exercises.

The Brazilian student still maintained a resentful look every time he saw him, but Snape didn't care. Perhaps, if he had more self-control, it would have been less humiliating for him than his performance during the duel.

In any case, the five days since the start of the tournament passed, and Snape had won all his duels with a perfect performance — 100%, which no one else had achieved. All other five members of his group were eliminated, leaving only him. Now it was the knockout stage, and there would be two days of rest before this new phase began.

Snape was being stared at constantly by Sirius Black, who had been drawn into group 2. Obviously, Black had no confidence that he would win, but the frustration and anger he felt toward Snape consumed him. He wanted to defeat him, even if only out of pride.

In any case, the day came. Snape entered the arena with a calm look, while the anger vanished from the opponent's face, who now only seemed to fear being humiliated by him.

"Begin!", said the judge.

Sirius simply launched a move he had begun training since he knew Snape would be his opponent once he got out of the group. He was as fast as he had practiced with Potter and Lupin, even surprising the judge and the others.

The spell surged toward Snape while he did nothing but wait for the magic to reach him. Then, he raised his wand, with everyone expecting him to release a shield, but he didn't.

Snape, quick, caught the spell with his own wand, deflecting it with its tip, as the energy began to circle around it, but unable to leave his wand.

In front of everyone, he simply moved his wand with the same energy and pointed it at Black. Snape had just cast it back at his opponent, returning it with much more power. Black tried to quickly form a shield and even managed to, but it was useless — the shield shattered and he was thrown out of the arena.

The entire place was stunned by it. No one could catch an opponent's spell and simply return it, but Severus had just done it in front of everyone.

He went back to his corner again, with James glaring at him, spitting out a stream of anger through his mouth, but saying nothing as he went to check on Black.

"You're certainly invincible, Severus!" Clarisse couldn't help but comment.

"Of course he is! No one's better than him," Rosaria said, crossing her arms with a smile of admiration on her face, while he ignored her. In the corner, now he was being watched by everyone — even those who had lost were there, staring at him from the stands.

Reporters were taking photos of him, and Severus would have preferred to simply disappear, but now he had to remain there.

The next matches continued. Clarisse, Pandora, Lily, Regulus, and about six more students were still in the competition representing Hogwarts.

Three Hogwarts students were eliminated in the end, but others stood firm. Only twenty competitors remained for the next stage, six of them from Hogwarts — the largest group.

Some reporters tried to approach him, but Snape always vanished among the students, disappearing from the place. The next day, he faced a student from the African school. It seemed like a tough match — his opponent was considered the favorite among them.

However, after a sequence of spells, the opponent fell, while Snape hadn't even gone all out.

Professor Flitwick was jumping with joy at every victory of Snape's.

Pandora ended up facing James Potter. The fight was intense, with wild attacks, but Pandora held firm and won, defeating James. People applauded her performance heavily.

Now, only four Hogwarts students were among the ten finalists.

Comments that Hogwarts was the best school in the world became common in the hallways. Almost half of the remaining competitors came from Hogwarts, and many others had been eliminated by them.

Snape faced Pandora the next day. Everyone expected to see a really difficult match, but the girl simply raised her wand and said:

"I forfeit. I won't fight. He's stronger than me." She simply said, leaving everyone stunned, since she had shown great skill with her spells the day before against James Potter.

Now, Snape was there, ready, but the fight didn't even happen.

"..." Snape didn't think it was good or bad. That was her choice. Maybe she didn't want him to go hard on her, which would be a lie, because he would've ended up putting on another great show fighting her like they did together in the Room of Requirement during training.

At the end of the day, Lily ended up facing Clarisse. The two quickly began casting spells at one another, both highly skilled. It was a fantastic duel, as neither overwhelmed the other, but both had a vast repertoire of spells.

Clarisse might not have been as talented as Lily, but she had certainly received special training. Lily, on the other hand, was a naturally gifted witch and tried, with difficulty, to hold her ground.

She was impressed with Clarisse, but she didn't have the experience the blonde girl had.

She quickly began to lose, until she dropped her wand, losing the duel with a bit of frustration, while people applauded.

Lily looked over at the Hogwarts students and saw Snape in a corner, not paying attention to them. Lily picked up her wand as the judge announced Clarisse as the winner and walked off, head down.

Now, only five students remained: two from Hogwarts, one from the African school, one from America, and one from Beauxbatons. The schools from Brazil and the Durmstrang Institute were no longer in the competition, which was a shame for them.

It would be a match in the same style as the beginning of the tournament, now with four matches for each competitor, and the one with the most points would win.

The first day began with only two matches. Snape defeated his opponent, while Clarisse also won hers.

The next day, they faced each other, with Clarisse trying to give Snape a good fight. He truly played in a way that impressed everyone, until she was finally defeated.

"You fought well," he said.

"But there was no other choice." She murmured with the obvious defeat.

On the third day, one of them sat out. On the fourth day, Snape returned to duel, winning once again.

And so the four days passed, each one challenging the other four. Snape, as everyone had predicted, defeated all his opponents and was applauded as the winner.

Professor Flitwick was more excited and prouder than ever, as Hogwarts had achieved such a resounding victory.

Now, finally, Snape would have access to the secret painting in the restricted part of the Demonic Castle.
