Harry had never found the outside air so fresh. His friends hadn't forgotten him, he was still a wizard, and now he could return to the magical world! Better yet, he'd escaped the Dursleys and could stay at the Waters' house!

As he walked with Hermione and Orli, discussing what had just happened, even Dobby's warnings didn't seem quite so alarming anymore.

"Orli, do you think that house-elf was telling the truth? I don't understand why he's so determined to keep me from returning to Hogwarts. After all, Dumbledore's there! It's the safest place in the world," Harry said uncertainly. He was now quite willing to listen to Orli's opinion, since almost everything she'd said had proven correct.

"He wasn't lying," Orli nodded. "Especially at the end - he practically admitted that the terrible things he mentioned were connected to his master. At least, that's where he heard about them."

"Indeed. If that weren't the case, he could have simply shaken his head. There was no need for such an extreme reaction. He even started hurting himself..." Hermione shuddered at the memory.

"I thought the wizarding world was only different because of magic. I never imagined wizards would enslave other intelligent beings! It's absolutely medieval!" She looked desperate to research house-elves in the library, though that would have to wait.

"Actually, I was raised by a house-elf," Orli explained awkwardly. "But not all wizards enslave them. Porgy, who raised me, was like family. Sadly, she's passed away now."

"Orli, I don't mean to criticize you personally, but this isn't right! Do they get holidays? Wages? How many hours per week do they work?" Hermione pressed.

Orli struggled to respond.

For Porgy, a gentle but very traditional house-elf, wages and freedom would have been insulting. The Waters family couldn't have spared even a bronze Knut for salary back then.

As for holidays, Porgy had been quite elderly, barely able to work toward the end. Orli had tried to care for herself as much as possible to give Porgy rest, but Porgy always worried about her...

Setting aside racial identity, Porgy had been more like Orli's grandmother. Who would think of paying their grandmother a salary for taking care of them?

"Hermione... perhaps we should focus on the plot that's supposed to happen at Hogwarts," Harry changed the subject, earning a grateful look from Orli.

"Fine," Hermione exhaled heavily.

"Back to Dobby then - who could his master be? Someone involved with Hogwarts, with a major plot that puts Harry in mortal danger, but isn't You-Know-Who..."

"Could it be Sn-" Harry began, but glancing at Orli, he swallowed the rest.

Orli shook her head and suggested: "I don't think so. House-elves are typically owned by ancient noble families. We should look at which pureblood families are particularly interested in dark magic..."

"There are so many - the Blacks, Lestranges, Parkinsons, Crabbes, Goyles, Malfoys..." Hermione was reciting the Sacred Twenty-Eight families when she suddenly stopped.

She and Harry exclaimed simultaneously: "Malfoy!"

Orli mentally applauded their deduction.

"Looks like we'll need to watch out for those Slytherins. Who knows what they're plotting," Harry said.
